Replica Elephant Man skeleton goes on show
LONDON?? An exact replica of the Elephant Man?s skeleton went on public show on in London on Wednesday, 112 years since Joseph Merrick?s death.
The skeleton, created from digital 3D scans of the disfigured man?s remains, is on display at the museum of the Royal London Hospital in East London.
Merrick was cared for until the end of his life at the hospital. His bones were kept at the hospital?s medical school in the hope that they might aid teaching or medical research.
The new replica will join an existing display on Merrick which includes his hat and mask, photos, and an intricate paper model of a church he made while living at the hospital.

Scientists are planning to extract and test DNA from Merrick?s bones, which are now held in the private pathology collection at Barts and the London School of Medicine and Dentistry, Queen Mary, University of London.
Experts believe Merrick?s condition was an extremely rare disorder known as Proteus syndrome, in which bones, skin and other tissue grow excessively.
Recent research in the United States, published in the New England Journal of Medicine, identified a genetic cause of Proteus.
Researchers at Queen Mary in London are now planning to confirm that Merrick?s condition was caused by Proteus syndrome, and are working with colleagues at the National Institutes of Health, USA to test DNA extracted from the remains.
Professor Richard Trembath, Vice Principal for Health at Queen Mary, University of London said: ?During Joseph Merrick?s life little was understood about his condition and how he could be helped. Current research on the genetic causes of disease mean we can now understand and ultimately treat those living with rare diseases.
?We hope those who come to visit the museum will see the replica skeleton and gain some understanding of how hard it must have been for Joseph Merrick to walk, talk and lead a normal life.?

Diablotek Abyss
There's been a heartening renaissance with budget PC cases in recent years. As models like the Thermaltake Dokker ?and the NZXT H2 ?have shown, it's possible for companies to include big features and deliver good build experiences, but still maintain a sub-$100 price. Unfortunately, these advancements are not universal. With its Abyss ($64.99 list), Diablotek demonstrates that it's possible to get the broadest strokes correct but drop the ball on practically everything else. The result is a case that fulfills its basic task, but does so with little finesse.
The Abyss' best quality is, in fact, its outward flair. The 17.2-by-8.3-by-20-inch (HWD) case is fashioned mostly of white steel, with three significant exceptions: the white plastic front panel, the black mesh ornamentation on that panel (specifically, the covers over the drive bays and the 120mm intake fan); and the windowed side panel. It's not necessarily an adventurous look, but plenty of clever angles (the fan grille resembles a star, for example), unexpected lines, and vent-shaped depressions help the Abyss project a healthy sci-fi vibe that makes it appear more expensive than it actually is. Two grommeted holes in the rear panel (where there's also a single 120mm exhaust fan) for routing liquid cooling piping also suggested latent gaming PC potential.
Open up the Abyss and you'll see what, at first glance, looks like a typically well-appointed interior (which, for the record, is primarily white as well). Two filtered vents in the floor (including one in the power supply bay) aid with passive cooling, and a large hole cut into motherboard tray's upper-left section facilitates adding an aftermarket CPU cooler, but there aren't that many additional holes for routing cables. Whereas Thermaltake and NZXT have lately begun giving you plenty of these, only four are accessible after you install an ATX motherboard on the Abyss: One, located near the bottom, is decently wide, but three others on the side are narrow and may make it difficult to send cables and wires where you want them. (If you're installing a microATX or Mini ITX motherboard, you will have two more options, but they're even smaller.) And, aside from the channel those holes delineate, you'll find almost no room below the motherboard for stashing cables.
You do have a generous amount of space (slightly more than 1.5 inches) between the motherboard's interior edge and the start of the drive well, though some of this will be compromised when you add 3.5-inch drives (the intake fan keeps them from sliding all the way in). But there's only one-eighth inch between the bottom of the motherboard and the top of the power supply?cramped quarters for connecting cables to headers or hooking up front-panel wires. Space is a problem from another standpoint, too: Although there's technically room to install an oversized video card like the AMD Radeon HD 6990 , the case's interior design makes it impossible to do so in the most likely location of the first accessible PCI Express (PCIe) x16 slot, so even the attempt is pointless. It looks like it should work, but it doesn't quite.
That's true of numerous other elements, too. Eight of the drive bays (the four 5.25-inch external bays and the four 3.5-inch internal bays) use tool-free retention brackets to hold the drives in place, but having one on each side inconveniently forces you to open both side panels rather than just the main one to secure the components. The remaining two bays (one external 3.5-inch and the bottom-most internal 3.5-inch) require screws to keep the drives in place. And if you want to install a 2.5-inch drive but you don't have a 3.5-inch adapter, forget it: There's no place to even just screw in smaller drives.
The seven expansion slots are also not tool-free. The spacers are attached and pop out easily, but installing a card requires screwing it in?and, if you change your configuration later and want to replace one or more spacers, you can't even do that. This obviously saves money, but it's a poor solution; the inexpensive ($59.99 list) MSI Raptor's external bracket, which haphazardly clamped down its loose spacers, wasn't an ideal solution, but it was better (though it also required a screwdriver).
Wackier still are two other characteristics of the drive well and one of the front-panel ports. The fourth 5.25-inch bay is blocked by a mount for installing a second intake fan; there's simply no way to install an optical drive in it (though it might be able to house a smaller device of some kind), leaving one wondering why there's a bay there at all. Even stranger is the black plastic panel at the rear of the 3.5-inch bay section. Printed with the words "Remove for long card," it's precariously positioned between the second and third bays, but provided no discernible function as it doesn't block anything near even the longest cards. If you remove it, not only do you gain no appreciable component space, but you also subject yourself to the mother of all migraines trying to get back in its original position. (It took us?no exaggeration?ten minutes to properly align everything again.) And regarding the front-panel ports, it's nice to have two USB 3.0 ports accompanying the headphone and microphone jacks, but why is there a slot (even bracketed over) to accommodate an SD card reader when no reader is included?
Things like this don't identify the Diablotek Abyss as a serious case for serious builders. As it is, it will suffice provided your needs aren't extensive or your expectations high. But more satisfying cases are out there, for not much more money, in the aforementioned Thermaltake Dokker and NZXT H2. And even the MSI Raptor, which will save you a few dollars more, is less frustrating to build in. Diablotek's case may be a looker, but, as always, the devil is in the details, and that's where the Abyss derails.

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The presidential race is entering the sultry summer, a final lull before the sprint to Election Day, with President Barack Obama and Republican Mitt Romney neck and neck and no sign that either can break away.
As both candidates take a breather this week ? Romney at his lakeside compound in New Hampshire and Obama at the Camp David presidential retreat ? each sees problems he'd like to cure before Labor Day.
Obama and his allied groups aren't keeping pace with Romney and the Republican fundraising machine, and that places more pressure on the president to solicit huge sums himself. And the Supreme Court ruling that saved Obama's signature health care initiative last week didn't change the fact that most Americans don't like the law.
Romney's fundraising is impressive. But, in a sign of his hurdles, he's spending heavily in North Carolina, a state he almost certainly must win to have a chance at the White House. And some voters in key states appear uncomfortable with his record at a corporate restructuring firm before he became Massachusetts governor.
National polls suggest that Obama holds a small, perhaps meaningless lead as he awaits a new jobs report Friday that could bring bad news similar to last month's. Romney is offering few details of his own health and economic proposals for now, perhaps thinking outside forces will dislodge the president.
"When it's a 2 or 3 point race, that's not good for an incumbent president," said Republican strategist Rich Galen, who is not affiliated with Romney's campaign. "Obama's political career is totally dependent on Angela Merkel holding the eurozone together," he said, referring to the German chancellor and Europe's financial woes, which could further hurt the U.S. economy.
An eventful June began badly for Obama. Anemic job-creation numbers followed news that Romney's campaign was raising more money than his. Things got worse when Obama told reporters, "The private sector is doing fine," a line now featured in countless GOP attack ads.
The month ended better for Obama. The Supreme Court struck down much of Arizona's strict anti-immigration law, a law the president opposed. Then the justices upheld the 2010 national health care law, a victory that nonetheless forces Obama to keep defending an unpopular mandate to obtain insurance or pay a fee, which the court labeled a tax.
"Last week was a reminder to the American people of who the president is fighting for," said Obama spokeswoman Jen Psaki. She cited "access to health care" and "immigration reform."
"But we're looking ahead, and we know this race is going to be really close," she said.
Obama on Thursday starts a two-day bus tour of Ohio and western Pennsylvania, a trip that partly mimics Romney's earlier and longer recent tour. The president might spend part of his drive time dialing for dollars. It's a chore all candidates face, but it poses new urgency for the president, because pro-Romney "super PACs" are raising far more campaign money than are Democratic groups.
In a leaked recording of a conference call Obama recently placed from Air Force One to top donors from 2008, the president implored them to match their earlier generosity. "We're going to have to deal with these super PACs in a serious way," Obama said, according to the Daily Beast.
Obama's team may find some comfort in knowing that since April 10, pro-Romney forces have spent more money on TV ads in North Carolina ? $6.4 million ? than in any other state except Florida and Ohio. Four years ago, Obama narrowly won North Carolina, which had voted Republican in seven straight presidential races. Most plausible scenarios for a Romney presidency require him to secure the state, the sooner the better.
The two campaigns, including their allied super PACs, are matching each other nearly dollar for dollar on TV ads in Florida, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Nevada, Virginia and New Hampshire. Romney's forces are out-spending Obama's in Iowa and Michigan. The opposite is true in Colorado.
Romney is vacationing this week in New Hampshire, where family games might mix with talk of who his running mate should be. Romney, whose oversight of the 2002 Winter Olympic Games won wide praise, plans to attend the Summer Games later this summer in London.
He also will go to Israel, a trip that could appeal to Jewish voters and donors, and to conservatives who see Israel as a vital military and political ally.
Meanwhile, Republicans worry that Democrats are making headway with claims that Romney supported shipping jobs overseas when he headed a corporate restructuring firm called Bain Capital. His campaign says Romney did not oversee the export of U.S. jobs, although Bain at times invested in companies that helped pioneer outsourcing certain jobs to places such as India.
"It is a problem," Galen said of anti-Romney ads citing Bain and outsourcing. But he said the ads might have had greater impact if Obama could have saved them for September. Instead, Galen said, Democrats had to throw every weapon possible to counter the damage from Obama's "private sector is doing fine" remark.
It's not clear how June's biggest political headline ? the Supreme Court's decision to uphold "Obamacare" ? will play out in the campaign.
Congressional Republicans have jumped on the court's conclusion that a fee to be imposed on people who refuse to obtain health insurance is actually a tax. Romney tiptoes around the issue because the fee/tax is similar to one he imposed on Massachusetts residents who failed to buy medical insurance.
"Once the dust settles, the health care issue still serves as a way for both sides to motivate their respective bases, but it's hard to see it playing much of a role with the rest of the electorate," said Dan Schnur, a former Republican adviser who teaches political science at the University of Southern California. A more important issue, Schnur said, "is Bain vs. Solyndra."
Solyndra was a California-based solar panel manufacturer that received a large federal loan and big compliments from Obama before filing for bankruptcy.
"There's no question the Bain argument is working very effectively for Obama," Schnur said, "because it hits directly at voters' biggest concerns about a private sector-driven approach to the economy. But Solyndra accomplishes exactly the same thing for Romney, when he argues about too large a role for government."
The economy, Schnur said, will remain the top issue until polling places close on Nov. 6.
Summer vacations and Olympic Games might distract voters for the next several weeks, and political and legal activists might keep arguing over health care and immigration. But Romney is staking his candidacy on the claim that Obama has failed on the economy.
An election that seems destined to be tight will largely turn on voters' gut feelings about job security, the government's role in boosting or hindering employment, and candidates' visions for the nation's role in a global economy.

Is gay marriage debate driving young Christians from church?
Rachel Held Evans, a Christian writer, fears that a renewed culture war over the issue of gay marriage could alienate young Christians.

As the battle over gay marriage heats up in this election year, one evangelical Christian writer is calling for a truce, fearing that the outspoken opposition to gay marriage among some church leaders could alienate an entire generation of religious youth.
?Evangelicals have been so submitted to these culture wars for so long, so that?s hard to give up,? evangelical writer and speaker Rachel Held Evans, 31, told msnbc.com. But ?the majority of young Christians really, really, really want to stop with the political emphasis.?
Held Evans, who regularly speaks at Christian colleges, said the young Christians she meets are much more open to gay rights than are older generations, an observation backed up by polling data.
A 2011 survey by the Public Religion Research Institute shows the generation gap between young Christians and their elders is large, with 44 percent of white evangelicals aged 18-29 in support of marriage equality compared to only 12 percent of those 65 and older.
According to the same survey, nearly 70 percent of young Christians also agree that religious groups are alienating young people by being too judgmental about gay and lesbian issues.
?For young Christians, having gay and lesbian friends is just a part of our life,? Held Evans said. ?It?s just really hard for us to see them as mere issues to debate, because we?re talking about our friends here.?
The shift is manifesting itself increasingly on Christian college campuses, including at Biola University in California, where, about two months ago, an anonymous group of students announced the presence of the "Biola Queer Underground," asking that the LGBT community on campus ?be treated with equality and respected as another facet of Biola's diversity."
Underground gay group emerges, shaking Christian college
At Wheaton College in Illinois, a group of alumni known as OneWheaton coalesced in 2011 to express its support of the LGBT community on campus.
?OneWheaton understands that LGBTQ issues are difficult to process at Wheaton College,? reads a statement from the group. ?We desire this to change for current students and wish to create such an environment, a safe place for them to process these issues and develop into the people they are meant to be.?? In response, school officials have said they are open to having a conversation about homosexuality on campus.
To Held Evans, American churches? attitude toward gay rights will play an important role in the retention of young Christians. In an article she wrote following North Carolina?s recent vote to ban gay marriage, Held Evans points to data mentioned in David Kinnaman?s book You Lost Me, which shows that 59 percent of teens who were raised Christian abandon the church when they become adults. One of the main reasons, the article says, is the church?s attitude toward gay rights.
Fellow Christian writer Matthew Lee Anderson, 30, agrees that there is a generational shift taking place in Christians? support for gay rights, but he is less convinced it?ll lead to any profound changes in the near-term.
?Those of the conservative side aren?t going away. They?re just going to be a lot more careful in terms of how they frame their positions,? Anderson told msnbc.com.
He also doesn?t think younger Christians are going to embrace more liberal views on matters of sexuality, including homosexuality.
?There?s going to be a large, less vocal, at least a substantive minority? ?? it?s not an outright majority? ?? of younger evangelicals who are going to take a broadly conservative position on sexual ethics,? he said.
That position stems from the conviction that God defined marriage in the scripture as between a man and a woman, Anderson said, and Christians don?t believe they have the right to redefine it.

For thousands of years the definition of marriage has been the same, said Pastor Joel Hunter, a spiritual advisor to President Obama. ?And so, there?s some reason for the apprehension that says this thing is moving so fast that I wonder what the next 10 years will hold,? he told msnbc.com.
In Hunter?s view, the word ?marriage? cannot be used to characterize a same-sex union, but he believes having this debate on a national stage offers a unique opportunity.
?We really have an opportunity to raise the level of respect, to raise the dialogue to where no rights of one group trumps another group?s rights,? he said, adding: ?The scripture has certain listed sins, and we want to dissuade people from those behaviors, because we think in the long run if it?s in scripture then that?s not something that God approves of.?
Hunter, who leads a Florida megachurch, said he believes the government could establish a kind of civil marriage, which would not fit within the definition of Biblical marriage.
?We don?t 100 percent?equate this as a part of the civil rights movement because for us at least a part of this is a matter of choice, it?s a behavior, and so it?s a different category than skin pigmentation,? he said. ?Having said that, we want to be sure that all Americans do have citizens? rights to enter any legal relationship that they want to.?
But finding compromise appears unlikely, Anderson believes, as most players on the national stage treat the debate as a zero-sum game.
?It?s winner-take-all, and there?s sort of no middle ground between the two positions,? he said.
While young Christians may be divided on whether gay relationships should be celebrated in the church, Held Evans said, they?re increasingly unified on their stance against legislative action, such as North Carolina?s gay marriage ban and others that will be up for votes this fall.
"Even young Christians who think that gay relationships are not God?s design, a lot of them will still say ?but I think it should be legal for gay people to get married, because this is America,?? Held Evans said.
?I think the main problem we have is that a lot of the folks voting about homosexuality, voting about gay marriage, don?t know any gay people,? she said. ?And I?m certain that if they did, it would change their attitude.?
