How to Make Real Self-Improvement

? July 25, 2012Posted in: Business to Business, National

Many direct sellers and small business owners are committed to growing their businesses and taking steps to achieve their financial goals.? This often involves some degree of self-reflection; after all, every decision about the business falls solely on you.? By making some improvements on yourself, you will be able to reap the benefits in your business.smiling business people 150x150 How to Make Real Self Improvement

  1. Make a list of what you want to improve.? The act of writing your goals on down on paper (or typing them, most likely) is the first step in committing to change.? Put them in writing to help you identify what exactly you?d like to improve, and then prioritize them accordingly.? Chances are you have some things you?d like to change right away, and others that may require some more time to work on.? You are in charge of your list, so adjust it when necessary, but take the time to create it so you can get right to work.
  2. Decide?why?you want to improve.??Within your list of things to improve, write down why you listed it.? Doing so will help you decide its level of importance and how it will enhance your life.? For example, one of your items is to stop procrastinating.? You may decide that by tackling tasks and projects right away and well in advance of deadlines, you will be relieving unnecessary stress and anxiety as well as performing better overall because of the increased time allotted to complete these tasks.? Since these are some very important benefits of self-improvement, you may want to make this a top priority.
  3. Implement deadlines.??So you?ve made your list, prioritized the items, and identified the reasoning behind them.? Now you need to create deadlines by which to complete them.? Without deadlines, your list simply becomes another piece of paper or electronic file that gets pushed aside and forgotten about.? Giving yourself a deadline helps you envision your endgame and draw up your plan of action.? Don?t be too rigid, however, as you don?t want to set yourself up for failure.? Give yourself enough time to realistically achieve your goal, but not so much time that you forget where you are headed.
  4. Utilize your strengths to improve your weaknesses.??Everyone has a certain skill set; you know what you can do well and are confident in your abilities.? Use this to your advantage on your path to self-improvement.? For instance, one thing on your list to improve is your tendency to procrastinate.? If you are a detail-oriented peson, that strength could help you stop procrastinating.? Decide that when a task or project presents itself, that you will map out an action plan complete with all the details needed to perform the job well.? Because you have now dealt with all the details, beginning work on the project right away will become much easier to do.? Knowing your strengths is just as important as identifying your weaknesses when making self-improvements.

People don?t generally like to be told what to do or how to do it.? Your commitment to self-improvement must come from within.? Find your inner motivation, do some real self-reflection, and take the steps above to improve yourself and your business.

State issuing more oil drilling permits

Story Published: Jul 23, 2012 at 1:01 PM MDT

Story Updated: Jul 23, 2012 at 3:00 PM MDT

HELENA, Mont. (AP) ? Montana is on pace to issue a record number of oil drilling permits this year while natural gas development has nearly come to a halt.

The Montana Board of Oil and Gas says the state issued 228 oil permits through June, on more than it issued in all of last year. If interest continues, the state could exceed the record number of 311 oil drilling permits issued in 2005.

Meanwhile, Montana Petroleum Association executive director Dave Galt tells the Great Falls Tribune (http://bit.ly/MiVNiL ) that natural gas drilling has fallen well off.

The state has issued just one gas permit in 2012 and hasn't issued a new coal-bed methane permit in more than two years, likely due to low natural gas prices.

Novartis Wins Approval for Breast Cancer Drug | InvestorPlace

? ?

Easter Island is known for its iconic stone statues. It may also become known as the source of an anti-cancer medication.

Last week, the U.S. Food & Drug Administration granted approval for Novartis? (NYSE:NVS)?Afinitor, which is derived from bacteria found in Easter Island soil, to treat breast cancer. Afinitor received regulator?s OK after it showed considerable promise in clinical trials, Bloomberg noted.

Rachel Midgett was one patient who received Afinitor as part of those clinical trials. Diagnosed with breast cancer in 2009, she later learned the the cancer had spread to her liver. However, after nine months taking both Afinitor and AstraZeneca?s (NYSE:AZN)?Armidex, she felt well enough to participate in a half-marathon in Las Vegas last winter. While her cancer is growing again, and she faces more new drug regimen?s and surgery, Midgett attributes her survival so far to Afinitor.

Afinitor blocks a protein needed by certain cancer cells to reproduce. By doing so, it boosts the effectiveness of other anti-cancer drugs, giving patients more time and strength to battle the disease. Word of the drug?s success in the trials prompted cancer patients to request it, even before it received FDA approval.

The FDA nod to Afinitor arrives just as the patents for bestselling Novartis drugs like Diovan and Gleevec are about to expire, giving the pharmaceutical maker a potential new source of revenue.

Shares of Novartis slipped about 1% on Monday in a downward-trending market.

The outlook for new anti-breast cancer drugs took a hit after Roche?s (PINK:RHHBY) Avastin failed to show improved survival rates last year and the FDA revoked its approval for breast cancer treatments.

Afinitor reportedly has fewer serious side effects compared to Avastin, though it has been linked to diarrhea, weight loss, mouth ulcers and rashes.

A look at recent tech-industry earnings

Google and Microsoft were among the tech companies reporting earnings Thursday, following reports from IBM and eBay on Wednesday and Yahoo on Tuesday.

Here is a summary of recent earnings and reports for selected technology companies and what they reveal about the state of spending and the overall economy:

? July 2: Microsoft Corp. says it is absorbing a $6.2 billion charge to reflect that one of the biggest deals in its 37-year history, for online ad company aQuantive, turned out to be a dud.

? July 6: Samsung Electronics Co. estimates its second-quarter operating profit at 6.5 trillion won to 6.9 trillion won ($5.7 billion to $6.1 billion), a 79 percent jump from a year earlier based on the midpoint of that range. Analysts say the sharp rise in operating profit was driven by the success of its Galaxy line of smartphones. However, Samsung's stock fell as lower-than-expected overall sales underlined the threat from Europe's economic malaise.

? July 9: Chipmaker Advanced Micro Devices Inc. lowers its quarterly forecast, blaming weaker-than-expected sales in China and Europe and lackluster demand overall from consumers. AMD says it expects revenue to fall by 11 percent from the previous quarter, below its earlier forecast of a 3 percent decline.

? July 10: BlackBerry maker Research in Motion Ltd. asks disgruntled investors at a shareholders meeting for patience as it develops new devices to rival the iPhone and Android smartphones. The company reiterates a warning that the next several quarters will be challenging. It also expects to book another operating loss in the current quarter as the company cuts prices to sell its older BlackBerry models.

? July 17: Yahoo Inc. reports another lackluster quarter on CEO Marissa Mayer's first day on the job. It continues years of financial lethargy that has plagued the one-time Internet pioneer as Google and Facebook have prospered. Net income fell 4 percent from a year ago, and adjusted earnings were short of expectations.

Intel Corp., the world's largest chipmaker, says revenue for the current quarter is likely to come in below Wall Street forecasts as it blames "a more challenging macroeconomic environment."

? July 18: IBM Corp. reports its 38th consecutive quarter of earnings increase. Net income rose 6 percent despite a 3 percent drop in revenue amid Europe's economic jitters. IBM revenue in Europe, the Middle East and Africa fell by 9 percent from last year. The turmoil in Europe hurt IBM's results as currencies there weakened, translating into fewer U.S. dollars. IBM says revenue would have been slightly higher than last year if currency-exchange rates had remained the same.

EBay Inc. more than doubled its second-quarter net income thanks to higher revenue from its PayPal online payments business and its e-commerce websites. Its marketplaces business, which includes its flagship website, saw the strongest growth rate since 2006.

? July 19: Google Inc. says its second-quarter earnings rose 11 percent despite a deepening decline in the prices paid for its Internet search advertising. The results included Google's $12.5 billion acquisition of cellphone maker Motorola Mobility Holdings Inc. for the first time. Revenue climbed 35 percent from last year to $12.2 billion. If not for Motorola, revenue would have increased by 21 percent.

Microsoft Corp. says a $6.2 billion accounting adjustment to reflect a weak online ad business led to its first quarterly loss in its 26 years as a public company. The company had a loss of 6 cents a share, compared with earnings of 69 cents a share a year ago. Adjusted earnings beat expectations, and the stock rose.

Verizon Communications Inc. says net income rose 13 percent in the second quarter as its wireless arm pulled in record profits. But its traditional, wired phone business was weaker. Like other phone companies, Verizon is losing landlines, but has been compensating to some extent by signing up broadband customers. In the second quarter, that trend faltered, as it gained just 2,000 broadband customers ? the worst result in four years.

Coming up:

? Tuesday: Apple Inc., AT&T Inc., Netflix Inc.

? Wednesday: Zynga Inc.

? Thursday: Facebook Inc., Sprint Nextel Corp., Amazon.com Inc.

? Friday: Samsung Electronics Co.

? Aug. 1: Comcast Corp.

? Aug. 2: Sony Corp., LinkedIn Corp.

? Aug. 13: Groupon Inc. (first day of trading on Nov. 4, 2011)

? Aug. 15: Cisco Systems Inc.

? Aug. 21: Dell Inc.

? Aug. 22: Hewlett-Packard Co.

? Sept. 27: Research in Motion Ltd.

Why Google's Second Quarter Earnings Could Mean Billions In Damages For Vringo

On July 19th, Google Inc. (GOOG) announced year-on-year revenue growth of 21% in its second quarter financial results. Based on these earnings, as well as Google's 5-year projected growth rate of 18.1%, the patent lawsuit recently filed against the company by I/P Engine Inc. could result in billions in damages.

I/P Engine Inc. is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Innovate/Protect Inc., a company that merged with Vringo Inc. (VRNG) last week. Vringo's lawsuit claims that Google willfully infringed upon two of the company's patents that classify how search and advertisement results are sorted. Since James Altucher's original article in April 2012 detailing the patent suit, Vringo's stock price doubled and is currently trading at over $4 a share. Billionaire Mark Cuban also purchased over one million shares in Vringo stock in mid-April.

As it pertains to the case, further analysis of Google's second quarter financial report reveals two details that could weigh on the court's decision or a potential settlement. First, the company reported that nearly $11 billion of its $12.21 billion quarterly revenue was derived from Google-owned sites, partner sites, and associated advertising, which is equivalent to over 90% of total revenue. This means that the main source of Google's revenue stream could be based on the techniques patented by I/P Engine.

Second, the technique driving Google's revenue is still growing in popularity. Per the report, paid clicks increased approximately 42% in the second quarter. This growth is correlated to advertisements on both Google and Network members' sites, which means it is directly related to the claims made in Vringo's lawsuit.

These details in the financial report demonstrate that activity on websites doing business with Google is increasing and that Google revenues are growing accordingly. The Vringo suit claims that Google earned $67 billion in revenue by infringing on its patent. Considering Google's projected 5-year earnings of 18.1% and assuming it remains constant over a ten-year span, the $67 billion revenue figure could increase to nearly $350 billion.

Since willful infringement patent claims can result in up to triple damages, this case could potentially result in a court decision paying Vringo billions. A court ruling of this magnitude is not unprecedented as NTP Inc. won a $600 million patent infringement claim against Research in Motion (RIMM), a much smaller company than Google.

Furthermore, in mid-June, the United States District Court hearing the case sided with Vringo on several definitions used in the lawsuit that were disputed by Google. This could be a positive indicator that the court will rule in favor of Vringo, and could also increase the likelihood of a settlement before the court hands down a decision. A settlement with Google would still land Vringo hundreds of millions, and possibly even billions. Either way, Google investors should continue to watch this case closely as it certainly will impact the company moving forward.
