NJ governor says GOP faces uphill battle in 2012 (AP)

TRENTON, N.J. ? New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie says it'll be tough for the Republican nominee to unseat President Barack Obama in 2012.

The Republican says it's possible for his party to take the White House next year ? especially if unemployment remains high. But he cautioned against underestimating the Democratic president's political savvy.

Christie was asked to handicap the contest Monday during an interview on Facebook that was streamed live from the social networking site's Palo Alto, Calif. headquarters.

Christie has endorsed former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney.

Christie decided not to seek the nomination despite urgings from wealthy GOP donors.

The governor says he'll campaign for Romney, but he expects Obama to be a formidable and well-financed opponent.

Christie's own possible White House bid will wait at least till 2016.

Obama pushes Congress' deficit panel to act (AP)

HONOLULU ? Sounding increasingly frustrated as a deadline for action approaches, President Barack Obama accused members of a special congressional deficit-reduction panel of refusing to budge from rigid positions and find a solution to the country's yawning deficit.

And with Republicans unwilling to cooperate on his jobs bill, Obama said it might take a new Congress to get economic growth package done.

"It feels as if people continue to try to stick with their rigid positions rather than solve the problem," Obama said of the 12 members of the bipartisan deficit "supercommittee," spreading criticism among Republicans and Democrats alike, at a wide-ranging news conference Sunday night, capping an economic summit in his home state of Hawaii.

"My hope is that over the next several days, the congressional leadership on the supercommittee go ahead and bite the bullet and do what needs to be done, because the math won't change. There's no magic formula," Obama said. "There are no magic beans that you can toss on the ground and suddenly a bunch of money grows on trees. We got to just go ahead and do the responsible thing."

Obama spoke as lawmakers on the specially created panel appeared deadlocked, with a Nov. 23 deadline fast approaching to find more than $1 trillion in deficit cuts or see harsh spending cuts triggered for a range of federal programs including the Pentagon. The president rejected the idea of softening the triggering mechanism, as some have proposed, though he stopped short of threatening to veto such a move.

"I still hold out the prospect that there's going to be a light-bulb moment where everybody says `Ah-ha! Here's what we've got to do," said Obama. He repeated his call for a "balanced approach" that would raise taxes on the wealthy and corporations while also making cuts in entitlement programs and elsewhere. Republicans on the committee would couple any revenue increases with lowering tax rates in a way the White House says would unduly benefit the wealthy.

Obama also defended his policies on Iran, struck back at criticism from the GOP presidential field, and addressed the fate of his stalled jobs bill as Washington politics followed him to Hawaii, where he's on the first part of a nine-day trip aimed at building ties and finding economic opportunities in the fast-growing Asia Pacific. Obama, who played host to the 21-member Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit here, leaves Tuesday for Australia before ending his trip in Indonesia.

Along the way, he's not neglecting his re-election campaign: the president was scheduled to raise money Monday at a campaign event at the Aulani Disney Resort in Kapolei, Hawaii. Ticket prices for the fundraising brunch started at $1,000 per person.

Once he returns to Washington Nov. 20, the president will grapple once again with Republicans who've agreed to only one sliver so far of his $447 billion jobs package of tax credits and public works spending ? a measure passed by the Senate last week to boost hiring of jobless veterans. But Obama contended Sunday that any failure of the jobs package would hurt Republicans more than him, and he said he'd continue promoting it even if it takes him past next year's elections.

"I'm going to keep on pushing," Obama said. "My expectation is that we will get some of it done now, and I'll keep on pushing until we get all of it done. And that may take me all the way to November to get it all done. And it may take a new Congress to get it all done."

Obama said he hoped Republicans would "recognize that doing nothing is not an option ... And that should be their hope, too, because if they don't, I think we'll have a different set of leaders in Congress."

With jobs at the top of the agenda for voters heading into the 2012 presidential election, Obama's sought to connect his travels to the domestic economy, and he renewed the point at the news conference held outdoors Sunday evening against a spectacular Hawaii backdrop of palm trees and rolling waves.

"No region will do more to shape our long-term economic future than the Asia Pacific region," Obama said.

Obama also defended his efforts to halt the Iranian nuclear threat, saying that the economic sanctions against the country have had "enormous bite," and that he is united with Russian and Chinese leaders in ensuring Iran does not develop an atomic weapon and unleash an arms race across the Middle East.

Republican presidential contenders, including former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, have assailed Obama for not doing more to keep Iran from getting nuclear weaponry. Said Obama: "Is this an easy issue? No. Anyone who claims it is is either politicking or doesn't know what they're talking about."

Google Music store expected soon with Google+ integration (Appolicious)

It?s the season of special events, with every mobile-related release drumming up secret invites more exclusive than fashion week in Milan. The latest is an Android-themed event from Google scheduled for this coming Wednesday, adorned with the phrase ?These Go to Eleven,? leaving much to the imagination. Kicking off in Los Angeles at 2 p.m. local time, the media event is expected to debut Google?s Music store, which has been a growing rumor for months, even before the launch of Google Music?s cloud services last May.

The Wall Street Journal hinted at the launch of a Google Music store some time between late October and early November, complete with Google+ integration for a social networking boost. This could mean users can recommend songs in their online library to Google+ friends, who could then listen to the songs directly, and for free. If a song is purchased, it?s expected to cost around 99 cents.

Google Music is going up against a pretty tough market, and an increasingly finicky crowd. Apple?s iTunes has dominated the music scene for nearly a generation, while the new industry darling, Spotify, has indelibly attached itself to Facebook for its own social oomph. The music industry has reached a point of no return, with free streaming and lax downloading capabilities available with nearly every handset through integrated services and downloadable apps alike. Already, Google is facing a potential setback in having to launch without licensing agreements from two major music labels, Sony and Warner.

It?s all about the personalized ecosystem

The promise of a Google Music store is the expansion of Android?s ecosystem, which already includes movies and books for direct purchase and rental through the Android Market. This personalized ?media locker? format is quite similar to what Apple?s been building for years, and what Amazon?s quickly building around its retail efforts with the Kindle Fire. With Amazon?s services and reasonable price point for its newest tablet, the Kindle Fire is set to take the market by storm. It?s topped the Samsung Galaxy Tab for developer interest, taking 49 percent of respondent?s interest, just behind the iPad at 53 percent, according to the latest quarterly report from Appcelerator.

But the worry is that these diverging ecosystems around Android?s core platform will only increase fragmentation, presenting more issues for developers in the long run. With Kindle Fire sales expected to soar this holiday season, developers will be forced to consider Amazon?s ecosystem, which has its own set of capabilities. And this time around, Google will be even less able to control the direction Amazon takes with its Android-powered tablet.

Study helps eliminate causes for joint pain linked to commonly used breast cancer drugs

ScienceDaily (Nov. 11, 2011) ? Researchers exploring why some women who take a common breast cancer drug develop serious joint pain have eliminated two possible causes: inflammatory arthritis and autoimmune disease. Because of these findings, the Georgetown University Medical Center (GUMC) researchers say women should be encouraged to continue taking the medication to gain its full benefit.

The study is published online November 11 in the journal Breast Cancer Research and Treatment. Preliminary findings were presented in 2010 at the 74th Annual Scientific Meeting of the American College of Rheumatology.

For many post-menopausal women with breast cancer promoted by the hormone estrogen, aromatase inhibitors (AI) can dramatically reduce the risk of their cancer coming back. Doctors say the AIs must be taken for five years to gain the full benefit, however, the development of joint complaints in up to 35 percent of women forces many of them to stop early out of concern that the pain signals a more serious condition.

"It's not clear why joint symptoms occur with AI use, but we wondered if it could be related to inflammation or an autoimmune disease," says rheumatologist Victoria K Shanmugam, MBBS, MRCP, assistant professor of medicine at GUMC, and the study's lead author. "Our research ruled out both."

Forty-eight postmenopausal women with state I, II or III breast cancer treated at Georgetown Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center were invited to take part in the study. All had hand pain and no known autoimmune disease. Of them, 25 women were taking AIs; 23 women were not taking AIs.

Subjects were evaluated after abstaining from non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs for 48 hours. Signs of inflammation from arthritis would reappear in that time frame, the researchers reasoned. All the women completed a health assessment questionnaire. The rheumatologist conducted a personal history and physical examination with each patient. Various blood tests were conducted and x-rays and ultrasounds of all participants' hands were performed. The rheumatologist and radiologist did not know which participants were taking AIs and which were not.

"We found that several patients in the control arm had a similar constellation of symptoms to those receiving AIs, but our team did not find any conclusive evidence that women taking AIs were more likely to have inflammatory arthritis or an autoimmune disease," Shanmugam says.

An autoimmune disease was discovered in four of the 48 women -- two in each group -- that had previously been undiagnosed. The cases were equally distributed among cases and controls.

"It would be prudent to refer those experiencing joint pain to a rheumatologist to rule out a previously undiagnosed autoimmune disease, and so that we can help address the symptoms," Shanmugam says.

"Although our study helps to rule out inflammatory arthritis or autoimmune disease as cause for joint pain associated with AIs, we still do not know why these women have musculoskeletal symptoms. Since the syndrome doesn't appear to be related to inflammatory arthritis or autoimmune disease, women should be encouraged to stay on their medication so they can gain the full benefit from it."

Lower credit score may make for a good hire

By Linda Carroll

Employers who use credit scores in their hiring decisions? might be weeding out some of the best applicants, a new study suggests.?

Researchers found no connection between poor? credit scores and the likelihood that an employee would steal or call in sick.? But they did find a correlation between lower credit scores and a more agreeable personality, according to the study which was published in the Journal of Applied Psychology.

Why should employers care about agreeableness?

?More and more companies have team-based structures,? said study?s lead author, Jeremy Bernerth, an assistant professor at Louisiana State University?s E.J.? Ourso College of Business. ??And in a team-based environment, this is a necessary component for any team member.?

Some 60 percent of companies now use credit scores when they make hiring decisions, but nobody really knows what these scores tell us about potential employees, the researchers pointed out.

?Practitioners say it?s a measure of all kinds of things?? integrity, personality, intelligence ? and we wanted to figure out what it really represents, if anything,? Bernerth said.

So he and his colleagues rounded up 142 volunteers who were willing to take a personality test, supply a credit score, and allow the researchers to question supervisors about ?job performance.?

As it turns out, people with poor credit scores were no more likely to steal or display any other type of deviant work behaviors, Bernerth said. They were, however, more likely to have easy going personalities.

The bottom line, Bernerth said, is that employers are using a score that may indicate nothing ? or something completely different from what they expect.

?You have to be a little cautious using credit scores,? Bernerth said. ?You have to be aware that there are lots of things that adversely impact them.?

Employers also need to understand that? minorities tend to score lower than others, said Madeline Neighly, a staff attorney with the National Employment Law Project.

Beyond that, many people these days who were prompt with payments for years now have bad credit because of the tough economy. They?re in a ?Catch-22,? Neighly said.

?You lose your job and your credit tanks,? she explained. ?And then you can?t find a job because your credit is bad.?

Employer?s use of credit scores can be especially bad news for the young.

?A recent college graduate might have done everything right, worked his tail off, paid for everything in cash, not used credit cards or taken out any loans, and his score will be adversely impacted, because there isn?t much credit history,? Bernerth said.

Should employers use credit scores in the hiring process?

Hague: UK to abstain on UN Palestinian vote (AP)

LONDON ? Britain will abstain from the United Nations vote on the Palestinian bid for statehood, Foreign Secretary William Hague told Parliament Wednesday.

For the quest for full recognition to be adopted by the Security Council, the Palestinians need at least nine "yes" votes and must avoid a veto by any of the permanent council members: United States, Russia, China, Britain and France. The U.S. already has announced it will veto the resolution.

So far, according to diplomats, the Palestinians have six "yes" votes lined up with two more "yes" votes likely, based on statements made at an admissions committee meeting last week.

Hague said Britain thinks Palestine "largely fulfills" the criteria, but that the best way forward is through successful negotiations with Israel.

"For these reasons in common with France and in consultation with our European partners, the United Kingdom will abstain on any vote on full Palestinian membership of the UN," he said.

The announcement drew criticism from former Foreign Secretary Jack Straw ? who urged him to reconsider and back the Palestinian bid ? and from former Liberal Democrat leader Menzies Campbell, who said the decision "is ultimately against British interests and will reduce our influence in the region."

Hague said Britain still plans to help the Palestinians build a state and will work to help alleviate poverty and strengthen institutions in the West Bank and Gaza Strip.

He urged Israel to resume face-to-face talks with the Palestinians and to drop settlement expansion plans.

"In our view, the parameters for a Palestinian State are those affirmed by the European Union as a whole: borders based on 1967 lines with equivalent land swaps; a just, fair and realistic solution for refugees; and agreement on Jerusalem as the future capital of both states," he said.

Hague said he informed Parliament of the government's plans because a vote on the matter will likely be held soon now that the Admissions Committee of the Security Council is close to producing its report on whether Palestine meets the U.N.'s requirements for membership.

When the 15 council members, which comprise the admissions committee, met last Thursday, diplomats said China, Russia, Brazil, India, South Africa and Lebanon had announced their support for Palestinian membership. They said Nigeria and Gabon will likely vote "yes."

France, Britain and Colombia indicated they would abstain and the United States said it would oppose the Palestinian bid, diplomats said.

Nigeria, Gabon, Germany and Portugal didn't announce a final position, and Germany and Portugal indicated they will abstain or vote "no."

Bosnia has said it is unable to make a statement because its three-member presidency is split on the issue which means it will most likely abstain, diplomats said.

(AP) ? When Jay Wornick's wife said they both should lose some weight as a New Year's resolution, he took up the challenge. Ten months later, he's 200 pounds lighter.

Wornick tells the Post-Standard of Syracuse (http://bit.ly/szPx81 ) that he weighed 366 pounds on Jan. 1, when his wife issued the challenge. As of Monday, he was down to 168 pounds. That's a 198-pound weight loss in a little more than 10 months.

The 30-year-old father of three says his typical daily meals used to include a 20-ounce steak and three potatoes washed down with a 12-pack of soda.

Now he eats fruits, vegetables and lean meats, drinks water and works out six days a week at the YMCA near the family's home in Fulton in central New York.

US officials say sanctions against Syria effective (AP)

WASHINGTON ? Syrian President Bashar Assad's days are numbered as U.S. and European economic sanctions and Arab League opposition have undermined a regime "that's basically a family-led mafia," Obama administration officials said Wednesday.

Jeffrey Feltman, an assistant secretary of state, told a Senate panel of the increasing intolerance worldwide for Assad's brutal repression of the 8-month-old Syrian uprising that the United Nations estimated this week has left at least 3,500 dead. Luke Bronin of the Treasury Department said the sanctions have forced Syria to scramble to find buyers for its heavy crude oil, a blow to the country's economy.

"He can't last. He can't survive," Feltman told a Foreign Relations subcommittee, adding that a growing number of Arabs want Assad to "stop destroying Syria" and that the country's leader has become a pariah in the Arab world.

He said some Arab leaders have begun to offer Assad a safe haven in hopes of a peaceful transition to a new government.

Still, Feltman warned that if the relatively peaceful opposition becomes an armed insurgency it would undercut efforts to get rid of Assad, dividing the international community and playing into Assad's hands.

"Their strength is in the peaceful protest," Feltman said. "They deny Bashar the ability to claim that he's really facing an armed insurrection because he's not. He's really facing people demanding their rights."

Asked how long the opposition could hold out, Feltman said he didn't know.

He said Assad responds to violence with violence, leading a "government that's basically a family-led mafia."

The State Department official said the United States is urging the opposition to maintain its peaceful principles while pushing for human rights monitors and media in Syria. The United States also is continuing to pursue sanctions on Damascus through the U.N. Security Council despite a veto last month. Feltman said the United States would continue to pressure Russia, China, India, Brazil and South Africa on a U.N. measure.

The measure vetoed by Russia and China would have been the first legally binding resolution against Syria since Assad's forces began attacking civilian protesters.

"We will relentlessly pursue our strategy of supporting the opposition and diplomatically and financially pressuring the regime until Assad is gone," Feltman said.

Feltman said Syria's once-promising relationship with Turkey was "in tatters," with a de facto arms embargo in place and the Turkish government providing safe havens for Syrian refugees and space for the opposition.

Bronin said sanctions on Syria's energy sector have been effective. Before the penalties, Syria relied on its oil sector for a third of its revenue. That source, he said, has essentially been eliminated.

Sen. Bob Casey, D-Pa., said the administration, working with its allies, should sanction more individuals in the regime who have been complicit in the crackdown on protests.

"The administration can do this by executive order and should do it as soon as possible," Casey said.

Feltman said the U.S. ambassador to Syria, Robert Ford, would be returning to the country in a matter of "days to weeks."

The Obama administration quietly pulled Ford out of Syria late last month, saying his support for the opposition put him in grave danger and there were personal threats against him.

During his time in Syria, Ford was pelted with rotten eggs, his residence was attacked by vandals and the Assad regime branded him a dangerous provocateur.

(AP) ? Europe's debt crisis struck at the ancient capitals of Rome and Athens on Tuesday. Italian Premier Minister Silvio Berlusconi squeaked through a key vote and resisted calls for his resignation, and Greek politicians said they were close to agreeing on a new government to lead their country through painful cutbacks.

Both governments are under heavy pressure to reassure financial markets that the 17-country eurozone is moving quickly to reduce crippling government debts before those debts break apart the monetary union and plunge the world into a new recession.

Wealthier European countries including Germany and France have already bailed out struggling Greece, Ireland and Portugal, and Greece will get another euro100 billion ($138 billion) of debt relief as soon as it resolves its political crisis.

Senior government officials said Greece would get a new prime minister later Tuesday. They spoke on condition of anonymity because of the secrecy surrounding the second day of talks between Prime Minister George Papandreou and opposition leader Antonis Samaras. They hope to reach a power-sharing deal that will prevent Greece from going bankrupt.

Italy poses an even graver challenge: Europe can't afford to bail out its euro1.9 trillion ($2.6 trillion) debt pile, and wants to see Italy live up to promises to rein in spending and improve lagging growth so it can pay it off itself. Few believe Berlusconi ? sapped by scandal and economic bungling ? has the political clout to get that done, and calls are increasing for him to resign.

Berlusconi's main coalition ally, Northern League leader Umberto Bossi, urged him to resign, telling reporters Tuesday: "We asked him to step aside, take a step to the side." Bossi is the volatile ally who brought down Berlusconi's first conservative government in 1994.

His comments came as he arrived for a much-watched vote that Berlusconi survived, but which laid bare the prime minister's lack of support in Parliament.

The vote, on a routine budget measure, won 308 votes of approval and no votes against in the lower house. But 321 deputies abstained from voting, most of them from the center-left opposition. If all 630 lawmakers had voted, Berlusconi would need a 316-seat majority to assure he was still in command.

Berlusconi scrutinized the vote tally handed him right after the vote, apparently trying to figure out who had abstained.

"This government does not have the majority!" thundered opposition leader Pierluigi Bersani, rising up in the chamber. "We all know that Italy is running the real risk in the next days to not have access to financial markets."

He was referring to Italy's borrowing rates, which have been soaring amid weeks of political uncertainty over Berlusconi's ability to oversee the adoption of austerity measures to fight Italy's growing debt burden.

Italian bond yields ? the interest rates Italy would need to pay when it borrows money ? reached their highest point since the country joined the euro in 1999 on increasing fears of default. The yields hit 6.73 percent, not far from the 7 percent levels that pushed Ireland, Portugal and Greece to seek bailouts.

Higher yields are signs of market fear of default and reluctance to lend, and they also make debt harder to repay in a vicious circle, since Italy needs to take out new loans to pay off the old ones.

The European Central Bank has been buying government bonds as a last-ditch defense to drive down yields and borrowing costs, but the bank insists the program is temporary. Eurozone finance ministers are working on ways to strengthen their euro440 billion bailout fund and give it effective lending power of over euro1 trillion through financial leverage and attracting money from private investors.

Even that wouldn't be enough to save Italy, the eurozone's third-largest economy.

In Greece, Papandreou and Samaras agreed over the weekend to forge an interim government that will shepherd the country's new euro130 billion ($179 billion) European rescue package through Parliament.

By Tuesday afternoon there were still no details of when an interim prime minister would be announced, but the pressure was increasing on Greek politicians to make decisions soon. There was mounting speculation that a former deputy at the European Central Bank, Lucas Papademos, might replace Papandreou.

The country's ministers offered their resignations to Papandreou on Tuesday to pave the way for the creation of the interim government, which is only expected to last until Feb. 19 when a newly elected government would take over.

"We have made our resignation available to the prime minister in order to help him with his actions," Tourism Minister George Nikitiadis said. "My feeling is that tonight we will have a name (of the new premier). It's going well."

Greece's eurozone partners are demanding that Papandreou, Samaras and three other Greek officials co-sign a letter reaffirming their commitment to the country's bailout deals and economic reforms, in return for the release of a vital euro8 billion ($11 billion) loan installment later this month, according to a senior government official who spoke on condition of anonymity because the demand was not public.

In return for its bailout cash, Greece has endured 20 months of punishing austerity measures. The efforts by Papandreou's government to keep the country solvent have prompted violent protests, crippling strikes and a sharp decline in living standards for most Greeks.

Senior exiled Tibetan urges end to immolations (Reuters)

BEIJING (Reuters) ? One of Tibet's most senior exiled Buddhist leaders, the Karmapa Lama, appealed on Wednesday for Tibetans in China not to set themselves on fire, saying he hoped they found more constructive ways to advance their cause.

The Karmapa Lama fled Tibet in 2000 and lives in exile along with the Dalai Lama in Dharamsala in northern India, the center of the self-proclaimed Tibetan government-in-exile.

The Karmapa Lama said the 11 Tibetans who have set themselves alight so far this year in the southwestern Chinese province of Sichuan were "brave," acting in desperation "against the injustice and repression under which they live."

"The situation is unbearably difficult, but in difficult situations we need greater courage and determination," he said in an emailed statement.

"Each report of self-immolation from Tibet has filled my heart with pain," the Karmapa Lama said.

"In Buddhist teaching, life is precious. To achieve anything worthwhile we need to preserve our lives. We Tibetans are few in number, so every Tibetan life is of value to the cause of Tibet."

China has blamed the Nobel Peace Prize-winning Dalai Lama for the burnings, and repeated the government line that Tibetans are free to practice their Buddhist faith.

The Dalai Lama, whom China condemns as a supporter of violent separatism, in late October led hundreds of monks, nuns and lay Tibetans in prayer in his adopted homeland in India to mourn those who have burned themselves to death.

The Dalai Lama, who fled Tibet in 1959 after an abortive uprising against Chinese rule, denies advocating violence and insists he wants only real autonomy for his homeland.

The Karmapa Lama appealed to China to "heed Tibetans' legitimate demands and to enter into meaningful dialogue with them instead of brutally trying to achieve their silence."

The immolations have happened in two heavily Tibetan parts of Sichuan -- Ganzi and Aba -- where many see themselves as members of a wider Tibetan region encompassing the official Tibetan Autonomous Region and other areas across the vast highlands of China's west.

Conrad Murray Trial: Jury Reaches A Verdict

Verdict should be read at 1 p.m. PT.
By Gil Kaufman

Photo: Pool/ Getty Images

After just more than nine hours of deliberation, the jury in the involuntary manslaughter case against Michael Jackson's former doctor, Conrad Murray, reached a decision Monday morning (November 7).

The seven-man, five-woman jury rang a buzzer three times following nearly three hours of deliberation Monday to indicate that they had reached a unanimous decision in the felony case against the Houston cardiologist.

The 10:56 a.m. buzz came after jurors deliberated for seven hours on Friday and came to no conclusion. The verdict is slated to be read in court around 1 p.m. PT. The jurors listened to six weeks of testimony in the trial and were tasked with deciding if Murray was criminally negligent in his treatment of Jackson, including if his administration of the surgical anesthetic propofol as a sleep aid to the 50-year-old pop icon was a factor in the singer's death.

The jurors had to weigh the opinions of a number of medical professionals called by the prosecution, who painted a picture of a physician who did not follow accepted protocols and who they claimed was motivated by a big payday. The defense countered with former patients of Murray's who attested to his generosity and attention, as well as experts who refuted the prosecution expert's claims that it was Murray who provided the final, fatal dose of sedatives and propofol that sent Jackson into cardiac arrest on June 25, 2009.

In his closing statement Thursday, prosecutor David Walgren said the evidence that Murray was responsible for Jackson's death was "overwhelming" and "abundantly clear." Defense counsel Ed Chernoff countered that it was Jackson who caused his own death, not Murray.

Murray is facing up to four years in prison and the loss of his medical license if convicted.

MTV News will be covering the Conrad Murray verdict live. Go to MTVNews.com for breaking news, reactions and analysis from Los Angeles or tune to MTV for the latest updates.

Ohio deputies faced charging animals during escape

This photo provided by the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium shows one of three leopards that were captured by authorities a day after their owner, Terry Thompson, released dozens of wild animals and then killed himself near Zanesville, Ohio. Officials said Thursday Oct. 27, 2011, that six exotic animals will be quarantined instead of being returned to Thompson's wife. The office of Ohio Gov. John Kasich says the state Department of Agriculture has ordered the quarantine. (AP Photo/Columbus Zoo and Aquarium, Grahm S. Jones)

(AP) ? Deputies who arrived at a private compound in Ohio where dozens of exotic animals were set free by their owner last month encountered lions and bears charging at them and crashing through fences, forcing them to shoot and kill the animals, according to reports released Friday.

They found animals crouching between abandoned vehicles and tigers still coming out of their cages. A tiger and a black bear were in the same enclosure, but the door was unlocked and open.

"As I backed the team up, the tiger came out the door and charged right at us," said deputy Jay Lawhorne.

With little time to react, deputies shot the tiger. Another deputy said he shot a charging black bear that dropped within seven feet of him.

Sheriff's deputies were forced to kill 48 wild animals, including bears, lions and endangered Bengal tigers, after their owner, Terry Thompson, threw open their cages late in the afternoon on Oct. 18 and then committed suicide on his farm in rural eastern Ohio near Zanesville.

Deputies said they saw the man's body but couldn't get near him to determine whether he was alive because a white tiger "appeared to be eating the body," a report said.

Authorities have said that it appeared one of the big cats dragged Thompson's body and that there was a bite mark on his head.

He told one of his farm hands on the night before he released the animals that he was upset about his marital problems and that he had a plan, said a deputy who talked with the caretaker.

Thompson, 62, then told the caretaker: "you will know it when it happens."

The reports released by the Muskingum County Sheriff's office reveal the chaotic scene deputies encountered and just how close the animals came to some of them.

Authorities have defended their decision to shoot and kill the animals, saying they were trying to protect the public.

Their main concern appeared to be making sure none of the animals got near or outside the fences that separated the farm from several neighboring houses and Interstate 70, according to the reports released by the Muskingum County Sheriff's office.

Two deputies shot a pair of lions running near a fence along an interstate highway. A deputy says one lion got up and charged at him before he killed it. "One of the African lions that we had shot got up and started running towards us," a deputy said. "At this point, we opened fire on it again, eventually killing it."

One deputy said he shot a shot a lion after it busted through a fence and race toward a road. At the same time, he saw other deputies firing at several other lions running through the front yards of neighboring houses.

He then came across a mountain lion that was hissing and showing its teeth.

Several of the cages and surrounding fencing had been cut, making it impossible for authorities to secure the animals, the reports said.

One lion came within three feet of an auxiliary deputy who was trying to close the cage doors, but did not see a hole had been cut in the cage, Lawhorne said.

Just days before he set the animals free, he told a deputy that he was having a tough time taking care of the animals after spending a year in prison on a gun conviction. He also was having marital problems and deep in debt to the IRS.

RED makes the Scarlet official, 5K stills and 4K video for $9,750

It's been quite a day for all you cinephiles out there. First Canon outed its pair of Cinema EOS cameras, and now RED has finally released the Epic's baby sister Scarlet. Scarlet packs a similar punch as her older brother, so she takes 5K (5120 x 2700) resolution stills at 12fps, or can shoot your next cinematic masterpiece in 4K (4096 x 2160) at 25fps. The Scarlet also can use all of the Epic's accessories and comes with a Canon mount so there's plenty of glass to choose from, too. Best of all, Scarlet can be all yours for the low price of $9,750. That's right, for the price of a used Honda Civic, you can shoot video that essentially looks as good as those made by pros like Peter Jackson and John Shwartzman (assuming you've got their moviemaking skills). We're about to get our hands on one, so stay tuned for our first impressions.

When she's all by herself, Scarlet cuts a rather petite figure. She weighs the same as an Epic, but trades her elder brother's ebony exterior for one that is, according to RED founder Jim Jannard, "battleship gray." Not the most feminine color, but we must admit we like the two-tone appearance when you start adding on extras like a RED remote or an external view screen. Unfortunately, we didn't get to shoot any video with Scarlet, but we did get to hold her for a bit and found the build quality to be top notch. The camera has a solid feel, and while we wouldn't want to lug it around all day by hand, it's easy enough to maneuver for several minutes at a time. We're hoping we can do some serious shooting with Scarlet with sometime soon for a fuller impression -- RED aims to start shipping them on December first -- but given her low price point and copious cinematic capabilities, we imagine her dance card will be filled for quite some time.

RED makes the Scarlet official, 5K stills and 4K video for $9,750 originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 03 Nov 2011 22:11:00 EDT. Please see our terms for use of feeds.
