TACOMA, Wash. ? The children of a Utah woman who's been missing since late 2009 have been placed in the care of her parents.

Sherry Hill, a spokeswoman for the Washington state Children's Administration, said Tuesday that the department's legal counsel had confirmed in court that the 4- and 6-year-old sons of Susan and Josh Powell would remain with Susan's parents, Chuck and Judy Cox, pending future court orders.

The boys had been living with Josh Powell and his father, Steve, in Puyallup, but the children were taken out of the home last week after Steve was arrested on charges of voyeurism and possessing child pornography. John Long, the assistant attorney general representing the Children's Administration, told a judge Tuesday that Josh Powell is also a subject in that investigation ? prompting Josh to quickly deny any such activity.

"I have had nothing to do with any kind of illegal pornography," he said.

Chuck Cox's attorney, Steve Downing, confirmed that the boys were turned over to his clients Tuesday afternoon.

"The Cox family has had a very good and very strong relationship with these children," Downing said. "They had a joyous reunion and that's all I can say."

Pierce County sheriff's spokesman Ed Troyer did not immediately return an email seeking to confirm Long's assertion, but told The News Tribune of Tacoma that everyone in Steve Powell's house is a person of interest: "We have not eliminated anybody and we are not at the point of arresting anybody else," Troyer said.

The boys were placed in foster care after Steve Powell's arrest, but by Tuesday Child Protective Services had turned them over to their maternal grandparents.

Downing told the judge that the children were being harmed because they had never received counseling about their mother's disappearance, they might have been exposed to the inappropriate videos, and they had been cut off from their maternal grandparents without explanation.

"Those kids may know something, and he sure as the dickens doesn't want them talking to anybody," Downing told Judge Kathryn Nelson.

Powell countered that he's a good, loving father; that the children are not at risk; and that they've never been exposed to porn of any kind. He also made clear that his family would not be posting bail for his father, and that if Steve Powell somehow managed to return home, Josh Powell would take the boys and stay at a hotel.

"There is no clear and present danger to my sons," he said.

Steve Powell pleaded not guilty to 14 charges of voyeurism and one of possession of child pornography. He remains jailed on $200,000 bail. Prosecutors said that for at least a decade, he had been secretly filming women, including Susan Powell, and that he shot footage of two young neighbor girls as they took baths and sat on the toilet.

The judge took the matter under consideration and told the parties to reconvene Wednesday morning. After the hearing, Chuck Cox declined to comment when asked about whether his grandsons were already staying with him.

Josh Powell frequently came near tears during Tuesday's hearing, breaking up as he described how the boys sat on his lap and hugged him during a visit supervised by CPS on Monday. He also grew emotional as he described the failure of the "general public" to look for his wife: "That, your honor, is deeply hurtful to me."

Josh Powell has said he took his boys, then 2 and 4, on a late night camping trip in freezing temperatures the day his wife disappeared from their West Valley City, Utah, home.

Authorities wrapped up a 12-day search of the desert Friday about 30 miles from where Josh Powell said he went camping that night. At one point, they said they found a "shallow grave" after cadaver dogs alerted them to the spot. But they found no human remains. Charred wood chips discovered in the hole have been sent to a lab for testing.

Greece to face inspectors, Merkel hints at bailout (Reuters)

ATHENS (Reuters) ? Greece's lenders are sending a team to Athens to inspect a government austerity plan they want implemented in exchange for aid, while Germany suggested a new bailout may have to be renegotiated.

Facing a wave of strikes and protests, Greece's Socialist government is accelerating its debt strategy to meet the terms of an International Monetary Fund and European Union rescue deal so it can receive a new loan next month and avoid bankruptcy.

The "troika" team of inspectors, which had threatened to cut off aid if Athens did not move faster, will begin talks on Thursday on a plan demanded by lenders to deepen budget cuts and raise taxes, which has set off protests not seen since June when riot police fought running battles with activists.

"I can confirm the Eurogroup (of euro zone ministers) will hold an additional meeting as soon as possible, still in October, to discuss the situation of Greece and consider the disbursement of the next tranche," a European Commission spokesman said in Brussels, announcing the troika's return.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel suggested that parts of a planned new 109-billion-euro ($148.6 billion) rescue for the debt-laden country could be reopened, depending on the outcome of the troika's audit.

"We have to wait and see what the troika ... finds and what it will tell us (whether) we will have to renegotiate or not," she told Greek state television NET, without elaborating.

Several hundred activists affiliated with the Greek Communists converged on the finance ministry on Wednesday waving a banner saying "We won't pay!." They planned to burn bills for a new one-off income tax introduced this summer, while Athens and other parts of the country were hit by transport strikes.

If deemed adequate by the inspectors, the new austerity drive will secure an 8-billion-euro loan Greece needs to pay bills and salaries in October and bring it closer to starting a second bailout agreed in July.

As a condition of the visit and to resolve the row with the lenders, the Greek government had promised to send a written assurance outlining its new plan to meet its bailout targets. Its contents have not been made public.

Germany has repeatedly said negotiations about the details of the second rescue deal can begin only when the troika says Greece has qualified to receive the tranche expected in October, the sixth under a first bailout agreed in 2010.

At the same time, leaders from around the world have urged euro zone capitals to end a tortuous debate and create a safety net big enough to prevent Greece's problems from spreading to other euro members and triggering a fresh global downturn.

DEBT SWAP DEBATE DEEPENS

The second bailout aims to ease Greece's debt burden by imposing a 21 percent loss on private Greek bondholders.

After intensifying debate among economists and policymakers that only a 50 percent loss would make the country's debt viable, more investors have signed up to the bond exchange plan, Greek financial daily Naftemporiki reported.

Citing an unidentified finance ministry official, it said Greece's weeks-long struggle to lure private bondholders into the rescue plan had ended with it reaching the 90 percent participation target.

The finance ministry declined to comment on the report.

There is no agreement yet among euro zone governments on whether a renegotiation is needed, including more pain for Greece's bank creditors, or on a U.S.-sponsored plan to leverage the bloc's rescue fund to give it more firepower.

Germany's Bundestag (lower house) will vote on Thursday on widening the scope of the European Financial Stability Facility bailout fund, as agreed by the EU leaders on July 21.

Merkel faces a revolt within her conservative camp and may have to rely on support from the opposition Social Democrats and Greens to get the measure approved, damaging her authority.

STRIKES GRIP GREECE

Late on Tuesday, police dispersed about 1,000 anti-austerity protesters with tear gas in Athens' Syntagma Square, the epicenter of anti-austerity protests.

Taxi drivers, bus and tram operators staged strikes on Wednesday, causing long traffic jams leading into the ancient city center and forcing luggage-hauling tourists scrambling to find rides to the airport.

Other trades ranging from craftsmen, printers and tax officials also staged stoppages and activists planned marches on

parliament and the port of Piraeus later in the day.

"I've been trying to find a job for a year now and it's impossible," said Maria Kappa, a graduate of the School of Philosophy in Athens. "I don't see the rich people hurt by this austerity, it's always the poor who have to pay."

Lawmakers opened the way to the troika visit on Tuesday by passing a property tax bill. That piles the pressure on Greeks suffering from several waves of belt-tightening and deepens an economic downturn heading into its fourth year.

Prime Minister George Papandreou's 154 Socialist deputies forced the measure through in the 300-seat parliament.

In the accelerated strategy, the government will cut the 730,000 public workforce by a fifth, reduce the public wage bill by 20 percent, as well as lower overall pensions by 4 percent in addition to a 10 percent cut already agreed in previous plans.

It will also now extend the new real estate tax until 2014, two years longer than originally planned, after the troika judged Greece's estimate that it would raise 2 billion euros a year to be too high.

University of Adelaide researchers have found that immune cells in your brain may contribute to how you respond to alcohol.

Lead researcher Dr Mark Hutchinson, ARC Research Fellow with the University's School of Medical Sciences, said his team's research provided new evidence that an immune response in the brain was involved in behavioural responses to alcohol.

This immune response lies behind some of the well-known alcohol-related behavioural changes, such as difficulty controlling the muscles involved in walking and talking.

"It's amazing to think that despite 10,000 years of using alcohol, and several decades of investigation into the way that alcohol affects the nerve cells in our brain, we are still trying to figure out exactly how it works," says lead researcher Dr Mark Hutchinson from the University's School of Medical Sciences.

"Alcohol is consumed annually by two billion people world-wide with its abuse posing a significant health and social problem," said Dr Hutchinson. "Over 76 million people are diagnosed with an alcohol abuse disorder.

"This work has significant implications for our understanding of the way alcohol affects us, as it is both an immunological and neuronal response. Such a shift in mindset has significant implications for identifying individuals who may have bad outcomes after consuming alcohol, and it could lead to a way of detecting people who are at greater risk of developing brain damage after long-term drinking."

The research is published in the latest edition of the British Journal of Pharmacology by PhD student Yue Wu, supervisor Dr Hutchinson, and others. Laboratory mice were given a single shot of alcohol and the researchers studied the effect of blocking toll-like receptors, a particular element of the immune system, on the behavioural changes induced by alcohol.

The researchers studied the effects of blocking the receptors by drugs, and also the effects of giving alcohol to mice that had been genetically altered so that they were lacking the functions of the selected receptors.

"The results showed that blocking this part of the immune system, either with the drug or genetically, reduced the effects of alcohol," Dr Hutchinson said. He believes similar treatment could work in humans.

"Medications targeting this specific receptor ? toll-like receptor 4 ? may prove beneficial in treating alcohol dependence and acute overdoses," Dr Hutchinson said.

Broccoli, Cabbage, Other Veggies May Protect Against Colon Cancer

MONDAY, Sept. 26 (HealthDay News) ? Eating fruits and vegetables
may reduce the risk of some colorectal cancers, according to a new
study.

Austrailian researchers examined the diets of 918 colorectal cancer
patients and 1,021 people with no history of the disease and found that
consumption of certain vegetables and fruits were associated with a
decreased risk of cancer in the proximal and distal colon ? that is, the
upper and lower portions of the colon.

Consumption of brassica vegetables (also known as cole crops) such as
broccoli, kale, cauliflower, turnips and cabbage, for example, appeared to
reduce the risk of cancer in the upper colon, while both total fruit and
vegetable intake (and total vegetable intake alone) reduced the risk of
cancer in the lower colon.

They also found that eating more apples and dark, yellow vegetables was
linked with a significantly reduced risk of lower colon cancer.

Yet higher levels of fruit juice consumption were associated with an
increased risk for rectal cancer.

The study appears in the October issue of the Journal of the
American Dietetic Association.

?Fruits and vegetables have been examined extensively in nutritional
research in relation to CRC (colorectal cancer), however, their protective
effect has been subject to debate, possibly because of different effects
on different subsites of the large bowel,? lead investigator Professor Lin
Fritschi, head of the Epidemiology Group at the Western Australian
Institute for Medical Research, said in a journal news release.

?It may be that some of the confusion about the relationship between
diet and cancer risk is due to the fact that previous studies did not take
site of the [colorectal cancer] into account. The replication of these
findings in large prospective studies may help determine whether a higher
intake of vegetables is a means for reducing the risk? of cancer in the
lower colon, Fritschi concluded.

Oberlin Cheerleading Club Revived | Fearless and Loathing

Every fall brings something new to Oberlin. New attitudes, ambitions, resolutions, confidence levels, and wardrobes; new and infuriatingly inconvenient construction and renovations; a new slew of wide-eyed first-years; new friends who are actually old friends who have been irremediably effected by studying abroad; new problems with ResEd that are actually just the same problems that you would think they could have solved by now; well-kept girls strutting into Stevie in new OC Cheer uniforms; new classes and professors; new? wait, what? Cheerleading uniforms? As in, like, sports cheerleading?

Yes. Sports cheerleading. It may not be hip, it may not be popular, hell, it may not even be in demand ? but nevertheless, a few spirited souls have been working seven days a week this fall semester to invigorate interest in Oberlin?s athletics programs in the most tried-and-true American way: by looking cute and making a lot of noise.

Alexa Wright ?14 and Kaley Diamond ?12 both had a gripe with Oberlin College when they began their enrollment here. Diamond, who had never cheered before Oberlin, used to express to her parents her discontent with the lack of a cheerleading squad, and the consequent lack of school spirit. Her parents suggested she start her own squad, but Diamond, an avid dancer, instead found comfort in the hip-hop dance crew And What!?, and let the cheer dream take a nap.

Towards the end of her junior year, that dream was shaken awake when she met Wright, an ambitious first-year who wasn?t okay with the perfunctory, disheartened ?Yeo baby, Yeo baby, Yeo? being the best chant this campus has to offer. A gymnast as a child and a cheerleader in high school, Wright saw the absence of a cheerleading squad and knew she had the history and capabilities to fill that void. Teaming up last March, Wright and Diamond began an incredibly painless and supported journey to revise and revive the Oberlin College Cheerleading Club charter and return spirit to the forefront of Oberlin athletics.

In 2006, a cheerleader very publicly fell from atop a pyramid at a football game, initiating the demise of Oberlin?s Cheerleading Club. That injury prompted the school to restrict the club?s activities, prohibiting stunting and tumbling (which are unequivocally the coolest things about cheerleading), after which participation simply fizzled out. The club?s charter, however, was still intact when Wright and Diamond decided to bring OC Cheer back to life.

Under the advisory of Lori Morgan Flood, director of Wellness and Health Promotion, Wright and Diamond revised the charter to meet the College?s liability concerns, limiting the squad to cheering, dancing, and jumping. Once the charter was accepted, they began advertising for tryouts last spring. The tryout process yielded a team of twelve women (two of whom are abroad and plan to cheer in the spring?talk about dedication), only half of who have any experience cheering.

After the squad was formed, Wright and Diamond delved into their severely limited funds to purchase those cutesy yet durable uniforms that you may have seen around campus. Marking initial success, OC Cheer was active at Oberlin?s first football game on September 3.

The football team routed Kenyon 42-0, and although nobody ran over to kiss his cheerleader girlfriend on the sidelines during a timeout, it?s probably fair to say all the guys were trying to show off for the ladies by rubbing Kenyon?s face in it.

?The football team loves [the squad],? says Wright, who has fielded compliments from players and parents alike, as well as some alumni who have been somewhat creepily in contact via Facebook. ?[The parents] are really happy with us because they don?t see a lot of student participation at the games,? she notes, aware that the mere presence of a cheerleading squad lends legitimacy and a certain degree of spirit to the athletic program.

Speaking of her experience at the first game, Diamond remarks, ?I seriously almost cried because their parents were so sweet, like, ?Oh, come take a picture with Grandma!?? The OC football community has been thrilled with the cheer presence ? an encouraging sign for the future of the cheerleading club.

Despite early semester successes, Wright, Diamond, and the squad still face challenges for the future. Funding, as for most campus clubs, is still a major issue, and Wright and Diamond understand the cost of achieving their goals. They hope to one day begin traveling with teams for away games, and overcome the ban on stunting and tumbling. Fundraising has become a key component to the club, not only for monetary gain but also to demonstrate their responsibility and dedication to restoring OC Cheer to its pre-2006 glory days. They held a car wash at the beginning of the semester (a la Bring It On) and plan on booking ?Sco nights throughout the school year. Although they missed an opportunity to organize a Homecoming dance, Wright and Diamond are eager to sponsor a campus-wide formal, which no doubt scores of hipsters and nerds will adamantly refer to as a Yule Ball.

Wright and Diamond hope to get the student body involved in other ways as well. As they are still recycling cheers from high school, the squad is looking for new, Yeomen-specific ideas. Although they are ?still mastering [their] first set of cheers,? Wright and Diamond aim to hold a cheer writing contest in the near future. By reaching out to the student body and fully engaging in the athletics department, OC Cheer may be the first step to building a competent fan-base that isn?t outnumbered in its home stadiums.

Wright, Diamond, and the rest of the Oberlin Cheerleading Club will be attending as many games and matches as they can this year. They encourage athletes to invite them to events so they may spread the cheer love across programs and build interest in different teams. If you happen to see them at a game, say hi, ask about the program, and suggest a cheer if you know one. Alexa insists, ?This is totally a cheerocracy.?

OC Cheer will be present at Savage Stadium this Saturday at 1 PM for the Homecoming
game against Hiram College.

I had the great opportunity to spend some time at CERN several years ago when the Large Hadron Collider was being built. I was there to look at the prospect of taking sixth form physics students for a visit and it was amazing to be in such a place where the fundamental laws that we use to explain the universe and how it works, were being tested.

The recent findings emerged from the research experiment dubbed Opera, which over three years and involving 15,000 neutrino ?events,? pumped neutrinos (often called ghost particles because they pass through matter unnoticed) from CERN in Geneva to Gran Sasso south of Rome, a distance of 730 kms (500 miles).

The astonishing and startling results show that the particles may have travelled faster than the speed of light contradicting Einstein?s Special Theory of Relativity which has withstood more than a century of previous testing. It is one of the key elements of the so-called ?standard model? of physics, which attempts to describe the way the universe and everything in it works.
If this were to be the case then the discovery would open up intriguing theoretical possibilities, only one of which would be time travel!

I think that it?s fantastic and so exciting that the LHC is now producing results that challenge the models of physics, that challenge our thinking and that challenge the accepted way of looking at things.

The neutrinos did something unexpected that has opened up a whole new way of looking at how the universe works.

And it has shown yet again that as far as physics is concerned nothing is certain and nothing is fixed.
