U.S., Israel Discuss Triggers for Bombing Iran?s Nuclear Infrastructure National Journal, by?Eli Lake |
Original Article |

When Defense Secretary Leon Panetta opined earlier this month that an Israeli attack on Iran?s nuclear facilities could ?consume the Middle East in a confrontation and a conflict that we would regret,? the Israelis went ballistic behind the scenes. Michael Oren, Israel?s ambassador to Washington, lodged a formal diplomatic protest known as a demarche. And the White House was thrust into action, reassuring the Israelis that the administration had its own ?red lines? that would trigger military action against Iran, and that there is no need for Jerusalem to act unilaterally.

The Israelis must have felt the knife touch their back. Obama has little troubel throwing small democracies under the bus. Now, with their existance at stake, Obama wants to reassure his Jewish base that he is Israel's best friend. Why they would believe any of this, is beyond me.

All a political posturing for Hussein before his re-election. He won't have the kahunas or the eggrolls to go through it. Unless the CIA drags Hussein away from the golf course AGAIN after the 16th hour.

Oh, there is plenty of reason for Israel to be concerned the U.S. won't act to protect them or prevent Iran from getting the bomb with this president in the WH.

Let's see... 65 years in Germany and Japan, 60 years in Korea, 12 years in Iraq, 11 years in Afghanistan, and now were ready to occupy a country that's bigger than Germany and has the same population...how many years there? How many dead bodies? How many maimed men? How much money do you want to spend?

Point a dozen missiles at Tehran, explain to the Ayatollah just how they're going to work to turn his fiefdom into glass and then stand around and wait for an incoming missile. Don't hold your breath and you'd better bring your lunch. It'd take a while to materialize.

Wolf Blitzer?s series of interviews with the Iowa frontrunners continued today with an exclusive look into the campaign lifestyle of Mitt Romney, in which the candidate detailed some more of his plan to gain traction and fight off his fellow Republican hopefuls. Blitzer ran him through several questions he gave Newt Gingrich the day before? particularly whether he would find himself voting Republican in November should Rep. Ron Paul win the nomination. Romney?s answer differed significantly from Gingrich?s. Asked directly whether he could vote for Rep. Paul as a Republican nominee in the general

President Obama kicked off a speech in Osawatomie, Kan., earlier this month with a positive nod to free market economics. Referring to Theodore Roosevelt's economic beliefs, Obama acknowledged that the free market system has been the most successful system in history in delivering the highest standard of living to the greatest number of people. "(Roosevelt) believed then what we know is true today, that the free market is the greatest force for economic progress in human history," the president said. "It's led to a prosperity and a standard of living unmatched by the rest of the world."

Totalitarianism: The world witnessed a grotesque spectacle Tuesday as millions of North Koreans mourned the death of the world's most odious dictator. It's a classic demonstration of the dehumanization of communism. In the free world, tears would never be shed for a monster like Kim Jong Il, the megalomaniac who ruled North Korea with an iron fist for 17 years, leaving a legacy of man-made famine, a network of Gulag prison camps for free thinkers, and bone-grinding poverty for workers unlike any other place on earth.

As if they didn't have troubles enough, the Republicans have not one, but two Ron Paul problems. The first is a cranky congressman from Texas named Ron Paul who won't disown a third-party spoiler candidacy. The second problem is the Ron Paul vote, which as we'll see has little to do with Ron Paul. The congressman named Ron Paul has served in the House off and on since the 1970s to no discernible effect. Every four years he runs for president, tapping into a vestigial base of Newsletter Libertarians, whose support qualifies him for the debates.

The media diminish the Republican presidential field in so many ways it wouldn't be worth noting if the stakes weren't so high But no way has proven more effective than their coverage of the GOP race as "Romney against everyone else," a distillation that negates the content of all the candidates' messages. The media first diminished the Republican field by focusing incessantly on who wasn't running ? Christie, Ryan, Daniels ? rather than on who was. Such coverage implicitly cast questions on the quality of the field.

Officially, the recession ended two and a half years ago. President Obama tells us the economy has been moving in the right direction since June 2009. Few will take solace in that statistic. Americans are suffering. For nearly three years, nearly one in 10 have been out of work. Almost double that number are either underemployed?working part time when they would rather be full time?or have simply given up looking. Historically in America, the deeper the recession, the stronger the recovery. By historical standards, we should be completing the second year of a booming recovery.

DUBUQUE, Iowa -- Mitt Romney?s stance on abortion is being called into question a week out from the Iowa caucuses. Republicans in Iowa received a text message to their cell phones very early Tuesday morning questioning Romney's anti-abortion credentials. ?Romney exposed at 2012 caucuses. Romney pro life??? the text one Iowan received at 4:00 am CST reads. Upon calling the 515 area-code number the text message lists, an automated message on the other end includes hearing Romney?s answer during a debate when he ran for U.S. Senate 17 years ago. ?Mitt Romney on life,? an unidentified man?s voice says as the automated message begins.

Arlen Specter is a reasonably tough guy. He has survived two forms of cancer and multiple election losses with few public complaints. But in his new memoir "Life Among the Cannibals," set for publication in late March, Mr. Specter, 81, acknowledges more than a few psychic bruises, including one incurred during a visit to Carnegie Mellon University in June 2010.

HBO is catching some flak in the wake of comedian Bill Maher's crack about Denver Broncos quarterback Tim Tebow. Maher, who hosts the long-running HBO show "Real Time With Bill Maher," wrote a message on his Twitter account after the Broncos lost to the Buffalo Bills on Saturday. "Wow, Jesus just f**ked TimTebow bad! And on Xmas Eve! Somewhere ... Satan is tebowing, saying to Hitler "Hey, Buffalo?s killing them." Tebow had thrown four interceptions in his team's Christmas Eve loss to the Bills, which prompted Maher's remark. Tebow tweeted after the game:

Ouch. That the President of the United States feels confident in taking so much highly visible relaxation time seems, in my eyes, almost ostentatiously haughty and aloof--but perhaps that's the idea? From the White House Dossier, emphasis mine: (Snip) With this one, Obama reaches a new milestone, having gone golfing 90 times in less than three years as president. That?s about three months of golf, given that the excursions generally take about five hours ? much of the useful portion of the day. What?s more, it?s the 32nd time he?s been on the links this year, a record for the

It is time for Republicans to get serious. After flirting with just about every candidate in a large presidential field, is is time to come home to the one candidate who has the demonstrated ability to run the largest organization in the United States, the Executive Branch of the federal government; who has never been touched by the slightest taint of scandal; whose success in the private sector makes him the outsider that Republicans say they are looking for; and who has by far the best chance of beating President Obama: Mitt Romney. Democrats on Tuesday lamented Sen. Ben Nelson's decision to retire rather than seek a third term in Nebraska, fearing the move could give Republicans a crucial victory in their effort to reclaim control of the chamber next year. Nelson, the lone Democrat in Nebraska's five-member congressional delegation, faced a tough re-election campaign against Republicans who believed his support for President Barack Obama's health care overhaul and federal stimulus legislation would spell his downfall in the increasingly conservative state ? and help the GOP gain one of the four seats they must net to take back the Senate.

Crony capitalism is the most serious current danger to the American community, a threat not simply to government or the economy, but to our very way of life.? It is the worst such threat since the trusts and monopolies of the early 20th century, and in much the same way. Cronyism is one of the major forces behind the establishment of the corrupt pseudo-aristocracy that has been taking shape in this country over the past two decades, a synthetic privileged class made up in large part of politicians, hustlers, and hangers-on who have become expert in exploiting
