Hillary Clinton hospitalized: Tough end to successful 2012?

Hillary Clinton has been hospitalized for a blood clot. The setback comes at the end of a very successful year for her professionally.

The New Year holiday is providing an unfortunate coda to what Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton might otherwise judge a personally successful 2012.

On Sunday, she was hospitalized after doctors discovered a blood clot related to a concussion she had suffered earlier this month. Her spokesman said she would remain at New York-Presbyterian Hospital at least into Tuesday for observation.

And on Monday, a Senate report faulted the State Department for failing to take adequate steps to protect the US diplomatic mission in Benghazi, Libya, where an attack killed Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans on Sept. 11.

Yet the former first lady and senator from New York has earned mostly favorable reviews as America?s top diplomat. Secretary Clinton?s wonky detail-oriented style proved a good fit for the grinding top State Department job. When she steps down in January she will be the most traveled secretary of state in US history, according to the Associated Press, having visited 112 countries in the course of her diplomatic duties.

Her reputation with the public remains high. In fact, she reached an unprecedented benchmark Monday when a Gallup poll named her the ?most admired? woman in the nation for a record 17th time.

Since her first year as first lady in 1993, Clinton has lost the ?most admired? Gallup vote only three times, to Mother Teresa in 1995 and 1996, and to Laura Bush in 2001.

?Hillary Clinton?s first-place finish this year further solidifies her position as the most often named Most Admired Woman in Gallup?s history,? writes Gallup editor Frank Newport.

Clinton beat out Eleanor Roosevelt, who won the vote 13 times, for this notional title. Margaret Thatcher is third, having finished on top in the voting six times.

According to Pew Research, Clinton has enjoyed consistently high public ratings throughout her term at Foggy Bottom. On Dec. 12 she was very close to an all-time high Pew rating, with 65 percent of the survey respondents saying they held a favorable view of her.

But as Pew notes, Clinton?s reputation with voters has plummeted at times. Her ratings dropped in 1992, when she waspishly commented that she ?could have stayed home and baked cookies? rather than work on policy issues. They fell again when she defended her husband during the Monica Lewinsky scandal.

But each time her reputation rose again. She, rather than her ex-presidential spouse, might truly deserve the title ?comeback kid.?

?On four separate occasions over the past 20 years, Clinton?s favorability ratings have fallen sharply ? but each time they recovered. It is rare for a political figure to accomplish that feat once in a career, much less four times,? writes Pew.

Given her prominence, Clinton is now suffering a spate of wild conspiracy theories related to her illness, notes the right-leaning Weekly Standard. In one such out-there theory, the secretary of State in fact was injured and a top Navy SEAL commander killed when her transport aircraft crashed near the Iranian city of Ahvaz.

Pa. railroad calendar delivered 63 years late

SCRANTON, Pa. (AP) ? A northeastern Pennsylvania newspaper has just received a calendar to help ring in the new year ? except the year is 1950.

Scranton's The Times-Tribune reports (http://bit.ly/S23ykD ) a mail carrier delivered it 63 years late without explanation on Friday.

The large tube contained a 1950 Pennsylvania Railroad calendar addressed to James Flanagan, former general manager of The Scranton Times.

The calendar includes a holiday greeting from a railroad executive dated December 1949. Flanagan died that month.

A U.S. Postal Service spokesman says lost mail is sometimes found when a machine is dismantled or office space is renovated.

Times-Tribune publisher Bobby Lynett says he'll see if the Steamtown National Historic Site railroad museum is interested in the calendar. If not, he'll display it in the newspaper's offices.

BAE unveils ?2.5-bn deal for military jets to Oman

British defence giant BAE Systems unveiled on Friday a 2.5-billion pounds ($4.1-billion, 3.1-billion-euro) deal to sell 12 Eurofighter Typhoon combat jets and eight Hawk trainer planes to Oman.

The deal, which will help sustain thousands of jobs in Britain, is the first major order since BAE Systems failed to merge with European aerospace giant EADS earlier this year, but failed to boost shares in the British company.

"BAE Systems and the government of the Sultanate of Oman have entered into a contract for the supply of Typhoon and Hawk Advanced Jet Trainer aircraft to the Royal Air Force of Oman," the London-listed company said in a statement.

"The contract, valued at approximately 2.5 billion pounds, provides for the delivery of 12 Typhoon and 8 Hawk aircraft starting in 2017.

"BAE Systems is the prime contractor for both the provision of the aircraft and the agreed arrangements for in-service support."

British Prime Minister David Cameron was in Oman on Friday, and met with Sultan Qaboos to discuss "ongoing cooperation between both countries in several fields in light of their good relations and the mutual interests of their friendly people," Oman news agency ONA reported.

Oman has historically close relations with Britain and is the only Arab state in the Gulf that also has warm ties with neighbouring Iran, enabling it to become a key mediator between Tehran and the West.

Oman will become the seventh nation in the world, and the second in the Middle East, to own the Eurofighter Typhoon.

"BAE Systems welcomes the decision by the Sultanate of Oman to purchase 12 Typhoon and eight Hawk Advanced Jet Trainer aircraft," it added.

"This contract is further recognition that both Typhoon and Hawk are leading aircraft in their class, providing the best capabilities available.

"As well as supplying aircraft, BAE Systems will provide in-service support to the Royal Air Force of Oman's operational tasks. Deliveries are expected to commence in 2017."

The Eurofighter project consortium comprises Britain's BAE Systems, Italy's Finmeccanica and the European Aeronautic Defence and Space Company (EADS).

"Receiving this contract is an honour and is excellent news for both BAE Systems and the Eurofighter Typhoon consortium," said Guy Griffiths, group managing director for BAE Systems' international business.

"BAE Systems has a long history of working in Oman and we are delighted this contract will enable us to continue to work together.

"We believe that Oman has now added the most advanced fighter jet and proven training aircraft, available in the world, to its military portfolio."

He added: "We look forward to working in partnership with Oman's Ministry of Defence, and the Royal Air Force of Oman, to ensure this is a highly successful programme that maximises the potential of both Hawk and Typhoon."

The latest order of Hawk jets takes the total number of Hawk aircraft sold, or on order, to 998 after a separate order from Saudi Arabia in May.

Separately, BAE had warned this week that a lucrative deal to sell fighter jets to Saudi Arabia was facing unresolved "issues" five years after an agreement was struck between the two sides.

BAE and Saudi Arabia signed a 4.5-billion pounds ($7.3-billion, 5.5-billion-euro) deal in 2007 to supply 72 Typhoon jets to Riyadh.

The group said Wednesday that ongoing discussions were centred on acceptable pricing terms. BAE added that underlying earnings per share would be hit if an agreement was not reached soon.

Earlier this year, BAE had attempted to merge with EADS but the deal collapsed under the weight of political wrangling and unexpectedly strong opposition from Germany.

In London, BAE shares had plunged by 2.16 percent 340.50 pence in afternoon trading, while the FTSE 100 index on which they are listed was 0.75 percent lower overall.

Food fight! Eggs, flour fly in Spain for charity

Citizens of Ibi, Spain annually celebrate the Els Enfarinats festival with a battle using flour, eggs and firecrackers. The battle takes place between two groups, a group of married men called 'Els Enfarinats' which take the control of the village for one day, pronouncing ridiculous laws and fining the citizens that infringe them, and a group called 'La Oposicio' which try to restore order. At the end of the day the money collected from the fines is donated to charitable causes in the village. The festival has been celebrated since 1981 after the town of Ibi recovered the 200-year-old tradition.

The WarZ Legit player review. - PC - =ADK= Gaming Community

The War Z ? A Legit Review by Emmjay
To start out, I want to say that I have never played Day Z, so I am not going to compare that mod to this game.??As far as The War Z goes, I bought the game about an hour before Steam pulled the game.??In that time I have played about 50 or so hours and here is my review based on personal experiences and thoughts and suggestions.

First off, this game is more a survival PVP in a zombie world and not a zombie survival game.??Most players, myself included, shoot any other player that they come across.??Why???The fear is that they will kill me if they get the chance.??This is survival of the fittest, not working as a team.??Even if someone in proximity chat states that they are friendly, how can we know that they are telling the truth???The few items that I may have in my backpack makes it worth killing anyone that I see just so I can get back to a safe zone and put them in my global inventory.

Second, there are major issues with movement.??There is no autorun, no cars or other speedy form of travel, and no swimming.??Now, I could almost believe that no swimming was intentional.??All that the dev?s have to say is that water was the carrier of the zombie virus.??That is why people can?t drink the water, can?t refill water bottles, and can?t even go in water past their knees.

Third, gear.??Going around and collecting items, with the hope of finding a primary or secondary weapon is exactly what every new player has to do.??And what happens when they find that M16 or Colt Anaconda, or whatnot???Most either try to get back to a safe zone and put it in their global inventory.??All the while there are players out there with REALLY GOOD weapons and they aren?t afraid to use or lose them hunting other players.??It took me until today, 12/29, to find my first sniper rifle.??Now I have the opportunity to be on the offense and not run around scared I will die and lose my gear.
Finally, what is the purpose of this game???There is no driving force in this game.??The website says that to stay alive is what this game is about.??So, by them, all I have to do is sneak to a town, get food and drink, make it back to a safe zone and relax.??Well, that is just boring.??Without a motive to kill zombies (like the skills that the dev?s say is coming) there is little point to do anything else, much less stop or reduce pvping.

There are some things that this game does very well.??I like the longer day and night cycles, with shadows and darkness and such.??It does make the game world, in some small way, seem more alive than it really is.??Ambient noises like birds, insects, and water also add to a sense of realism.

The biggest thing that I am torn about, and at times it could go either way is that if you purchase something in the marketplace and then die with it in your inventory, you lose that item, almost for certain permanently.??Now, I can understand why they might have done it this way, so that players care about what they have and that they don?t take major risks with those items.??Then again, they could have done it only so players keep buying those items with real money, enlarging the coffers of the dev?s.
What have they done wrong???Well, just about everything else.??Zombies are little more than a small obstacle when out searching for gear.??Their animations are laughable, their detection radius is a joke, and are really easy to kill (as long as you don?t have a flashlight).??Many, if not most buldings cannot be entered.??The skyscrapers in Boulder at best allow you to enter only up to the second floor.??There is also a complete lack of variety in building designs.??Every major building in this game is the same.??Same interior and exterior layout.??Oh, and I am not going to forget to mention all the rampant hacking and duping??going on.

So, what can Hammerpoint do to fix this game???First off I want to know what you are DOING.??I don?t care what you are planning on doing, what you hope??to do, or what you would like players to do.??You know, relate it like this -??I am planning on going to Paris, but when, who knows? What I am DOING is saving money for that trip.

You need to fix your relationship with your playerbase.??With the Steam frakup, and all the complaining, you need to do something to either thank your loyal fanbase in some MAJOR way, or do something just as major to get back those players that you have lost.??You need to stop all the micro transactions.??Why should I pay for the game, pay for more than one player skin, pay for a clan, pay for starting with something more than a crappy flashlight, etc.??You went from a one hour respawn timer to a four hour respawn timer (but you could pay to respawn faster) and then reverse that idea.
Hammerpoint, you need to stop lying.??You blaming us players for ?misreading? what was posted on Steam.??You posted false advertising, admit it, and drive on.??The biggest lie you tell is right on the homepage.??You state that there are no hidden fees.??Well, yes there are.??You don?t tell players that if you want something more than the basic model, want to start with more stuff, or even form a clan, there is price for that.??What you don?t state, in short, is that there are many, many microtransactions to be had to those who want to spend money.

After all the above, what do I thing of the game???In truth I like it.??While it is in a rough state, there is so much potential to be had here.??While I am scared in this game, it is not to be scared if zombies come and kill me, I am scared because another player might kill me.??I love the mistrust, the complete abandon of what we call ?normalcy?.??It?s anarchy baby, have fun while you can because you will die, you will lose your gear, and you will hate it.

BENEFITS OF OWNING YOUR OWN HOME BASED BUSINESS!

In these trying times, what can we do to get ahead in life? Forget the traditional answers like ?get a good job?. The days of working 40 years for a large corporation and retiring on a nice pension are history. Starting your own small business, such as a retail store or a restaurant, is even worse. Eighty percent of all new businesses fail within five years ? most within two years. Franchises are not the answer either. The average cost to get into a franchised business is $185,000. Even then, for a number of years, you end up working for minimum wages, selling products or services to strangers. Starting a home based business in Network Marketing is the way to go these days.

Some of the benefits of owning your own home-based business!

1. Financial Freedom and Security!
2. Legitimate Income Tax deductions!
3. More Time to spend with Family and Friends!
4. No Boss!
5. True Residual Income!
6. Retire in luxury and comfort, not on a social security pension that may not be there.
7. Work with people you like, not people you have to!
8. Own the Dream Home and/or Dream Car you have always wanted!

We hope you will make the decision to take control of your life. By joining or the The Ez Money Method or the GVO or any other opportunity that you see fit, you will have the opportunity to be among the many who are earning a substantial income in Network Marketing today. Our true success will come by helping others build their dreams. Let the The EZ Money Method help you begin to build your dreams today!

Below is a great video on the claim that most people fail at network marketing. I think you will find this video to be a clear explanation on what kind of people are really making this claim. God Bless.

Darren Collison Buzzer Beater: Mavericks Guard Sends Game Into Overtime, But OKC Wins (VIDEO)

It's unlikely Rick Carlisle drew it up this way. But it's also unlikely he cares.

With Carlisle's Mavericks trailing the Thunder, 98-95, with 2.2 seconds remaining, Dallas' Shawn Marion tried getting the inbound pass to Vince Carter on the wing. But the ball was deflected. Marion pounced on the ball, quickly took one dribble and then passed it to Darren Collison, who was standing beyond the 3-point line.

Without time running out, Collison jumped as he caught the ball and threw up a wild shot in mid-air.

In. Free basketball.

The officials reviewed the buzzer beater and confirmed that it was a made basket, sending the game into overtime.

Unfortunately for the Mavs, Russell Westbrook took over in the extra five minutes scoring eight of the team's 13 points as Oklahoma City went on to win 111-105.

Collison finished with 32 points and even though it didn't win the game, his buzzer beater was arguably the highlight of the game.

Kitten marks 11,000th Oregon Humane Society adoption in 2012 ...

A brown tabby kitten became the 11,000th animal adopted this year from the Oregon Humane Society, the third year in a row the agency has achieved that amount.

The 3-month-old, 3-pound feline, named Azazel, was adopted about 2 p.m. Thursday by a Lake Oswego woman, said David Lytle, an agency spokesman.

He estimated at least 100 more dogs, cats and other small animals will find homes before 2012 ends.

"Our yearly goal is to find homes for at least 11,000 animals," Lytle said. "For us to hit that mark for another year is an accomplishment."

Last week, 106 animals were adopted Dec. 20, a single-day record for the Humane Society. Last year, it set a record of 11,521 animals adopted, the most since the society's new shelter in Portland opened in 2000, Lytle said.

?

The society has slashed adoption fees by 50 percent or more to empty its kennels and other animal areas.

Fees, which include spaying or neutering, initial shots and microchips, range from $50 for a dog 6 months or older to $12 for an adult cat. Puppies, which are not discounted, still cost $200 to $400.

The shelter, 1067 N.E. Columbia Blvd., is open for adoptions from 10 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Thursday to Saturday and from 10 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Sunday to Wednesday.

Got a bike you don't use? - Vancouver Is Awesome

Here?s something really awesome: Firefighters Without Borders are helping fill a couple of shipping containers full of goods to ship off to one of the poorest cities in the Americas. The containers as well as the cost of shipment have already been donated to send help to a remote area of Nicaragua in January, and they need YOUR help in filling them with stuff!

This is Cristina Maria, one of the children who lives in the dump community they?re sending support to

Nicaragua is the second poorest country in the Americas and the region of Chinendega is the poorest area of the country. They basically need everything. But goods of all kinds will be put to good use in two different orphanages and three schools, including a community centre that has been built with Canadian support within a garbage dump community of nearly 4,000 people.

The range of items that would be helpful include:

- Bikes, bike parts, repair tools
- Sporting equipment of all kinds for children and youth, particularly baseball, soccer and surfing equipment
- Office equipment including computers, desks, chairs
- Hospital and health supplies and equipment, including toothbrushes, toothpaste etc.
- Power tools of all types and sizes. There is a plan to finish building a trade school and these would be essential
- Kitchen appliances, including ice makers, industrial toasters, ovens, and commercial kitchen supplies. These will be critical for the food programs.
- Marine equipment, including life jackets, motors, parts
- Water purifiers and filters
- Gardening and farming equipment, including generators

Bob Dubbert with a donation from Cheryl Murtland from St Michaels University School

A group, including many kids, are going down to Nicaragua on a volunteer project for March break 2013. It would be great for them to be able to open the containers from Vancouver when they are there to begin their work. If you have any surplus goods along these lines that you can donate it would mean a lot. Please pass this along to anyone you think may be of help.

Charitable receipts can be arranged for the value of the goods through Firefighters Without Borders who are assisting with this work.

The ship leaves Vancouver on January 4th, so any goods earmarked for this impoverished community needs to be identified by January 3rd.

If you have anything to donate please contact Bob Dubbert, President of Firefighters Without Borders, to arrange dropoff. His email is bobdvfd@gmail.com

Mental Health Service Agencies Looking Into Additional Outreach ...

?

With the news that Sandy Hook Elementary School shooter Adam Lanza suffered from mental health illnesses, much discussion has taken place about them along with speculation about risks of potential violence. Rockland County Department of Mental Health Commissioner Mary Ann Walsh-Tozer said local mental health service providers have been addressing the questions raised by their clients and are looking to organize a community forum with a partnership of public and private entities to reach out to the general public.

She said the idea is to determine ?how we might add to the package of services that are accessible to people? through community workshops or discussions.

Walsh-Tozer said, ?Our hope is to be able to do something within the month of January.??

Jawonio Spokesperson Diana Hess said a possible community forum could include Jawonio, the county Mental Health Department, Mental Health Association of Rockland County, BOCES and others.?

?We?re looking forward to collaborating with the county, Mental Health Association and BOCES,? said Hess. ?We?re going to be able to lend our expertise and compassion.?

Agencies already responded individually. Jawonio has been offering in-house counseling to its clients and employees, United Hospice of Rockland has been providing grief counseling and school districts made grief counselors available to students and staff.?

Hess said Jawonio wants to be part of the discussions that focus on Autism and Asperger?s Syndrome and to help de-stigmatize them.

13 Resolutions To Make You A Better, More Productive Writer In 2013

We?ve all been burned by New Year?s resolutions. Otherwise, we?d have statuesque physiques, shelves lined with our best sellers, and pools full of cash instead of hangovers, unfinished manuscripts, and maxed-out credit cards. Most of us have failed so many times that even the words ?New Year?s resolution? elicit shame and fury. (Or maybe that?s just me, but I sure hope not. Schadenfreude is the best.)

That?s why I?m not asking you to make a resolution for 2013. I am, however, asking you to make a resolution for January of 2013. On February 1, you can go right back to your old ways. But you won?t. See, resolving to change for all eternity is as daunting as skydiving from space (I mean, did you see that guy?), but resolving to change for one month is manageable. Reasonable even. And in most cases, it?s all you need. It takes an average of 21 days for a new habit to stick. January has 31, so get through the month and you?re golden, with room to spare.

We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit.?
?Aristotle

Resolving to change for all eternity is as daunting as skydiving from space, but resolving to change for one month is manageable. It takes an average of 21 days for a new habit to stick. January has 31, so get through the month and you?re golden.

I used to think that whole three-weeks-to-a-new-habit thing was rubbish, but in September I decided I was sick of talking about getting fit and failing. I signed up for a four-week boot camp, telling myself, ?It?s just four weeks. You can do anything for four little weeks.? I purposely avoided making huge promises about marathons and Olympic gold. At that point, I enjoyed exercise about as much as deer enjoy having their heads lopped off to be displayed on some hunter?s den wall. So, like, not at all. After my third week, in a move that mystifies even me, I signed up for six more months of boot camp. The habit was in place, and it didn?t seem so intimidating anymore. Today, brutal workouts are just part of my day. No big. If you knew me, that?d blow your mind. In 2013, I?m going to use the same method to work on my writing goals. One month at a time. One thing at a time. I think you should join me because if a desk potato like me can be turned into someone who enjoys working out then, trust me, you can do anything.

For starters, don?t think of the New Year as a time to do a massive overhaul on your life. That?s overwhelming and likely to end in tears and swearing. Think of it, instead, as a clean slate that gives you permission to stop beating yourself up for the failures of 2012. You didn?t finish the novel, enter that writing contest, take any classes, whatever. It doesn?t matter now. Let it go. Face forward, brave soldier. Self-doubt and guilt are among a writer?s worst enemies. It?s time to stop hoping and start working.

Here are 13 resolutions to consider for January 2013 if you?re ready to be a better, more productive writer, and some tips to make them work for you?

1. I will write X minutes a day or write X words a day

Make your goals as specific as possible. Vague ?I?ll write more? kind of resolutions are way too easy to fudge. ?Uh, yeah, I wrote more today. More than that one time I wrote my initials in the snow with pee.? That?s why giving yourself a specific number of minutes or words to hit every day is a great way to spend January. Yeah, every day. All of them. Consistency is the magic behind establishing new habits. It?s just four weeks. You?ve got this.

Start with something that you can definitely sustain for a month. If you haven?t been writing regularly, don?t start with 5,000 words or nine hours a day. (It?s not that you can?t do it, but it might be that you can?t do it YET.) You need a win here. Start as low as you need to; 500 words or half an hour a day is still more than zero words and zero minutes, and at the end of January, you will have kicked out 15,500 words or written for fifteen and a half hours. Boom! Sense of achievement! If, at the end of the month, you?ve consistently written every day, you?ll be excited about stepping it up a notch in February.

2. I will start writing at X o?clock every day

Here?s the thing about developing a habit: While you?re trying to cement it into your life, there?s no room for flexibility or for giving yourself a break just this once. This resolution is good for that reason. After a month of writing at the same time every day, your muse will start to understand when to show up. Sometimes she'll be out posing for art students, trying to make some extra cash, and you've still got to work on those days. But most of the time she'll be there. Create a trigger to remind yourself that it?s time to put pen to paper: set an alarm, train your dog to attack your crotch, put the coffee pot on a timer, whatever it takes. Experts in habit-forming swear by triggers.

3. I will finish a chapter in my novel

Look, you could go balls to the wall and resolve to finish your novel, but breaking that down into smaller goals is much more likely to result in high fives and celebratory toasts. A shopaholic should resolve to put $20 in the piggy bank, not $2,000. A couch potato should resolve to run around the block, not to run a marathon. The same goes for writers. Tiny steps are better than no steps. Add up enough chapters, and you?ll end up with a novel anyway. It?s just a less terrifying approach.

4. I will read X books per week

Again, put a number on it. How many books exactly equal success? This one is a less direct path to improving your writing, but no less important. Good writers are avid readers. There?s an undeniable correlation. Like most of these resolutions, you need to ask yourself why it?s not something you?re currently doing. Most likely, the answer is that you don?t have time. Unless you're a time-bending wizard (and if so, is writing really the career path for you?), the number of hours in the day isn't going to change just because you want to do a bit more reading. You need to make some decisions. Where is the time going to come from? Don?t think of it as adding a new habit. Think of it as replacing an old one. You?ll need to spend less time doing something else in order to spend more time reading (or writing). What?s that something going to be? Figure that out before you start. Spend less time watching television, using Facebook, Bigfoot hunting, or whatever?s sucking up hours you could spend reading or writing. That leads us to?

5. I will minimize other commitments in order to focus on writing

Your schedule will get stacked with as many blog posts, unpaid writing gigs (to get your name out there, of course), volunteer projects, social events, household obligations, leisure activities, and goth costume balls as you allow it to. If your priority is writing, make a conscious decision to truly make it a priority in January. Look at your current commitments. Figure out what you can cut out to make more time in the day, and learn to say no when you need to. Nobody?s gonna hate you for working hard to achieve your dreams, and if they do, they sort of suck anyway.

6. I will submit X stories for publication

Make your goals as specific as possible. Vague ?I?ll write more? kind of resolutions are way too easy to fudge.

The important thing about this particular resolution is that you need to redefine success so you don?t get frustrated. In this case, success has nothing to do with whether the pieces you submit are met with rejection or publication. If you actually send the appropriate number of polished stories with good query letters to publications, you win. I don?t need to rehash all those stories about world-famous authors who could wallpaper their homes in rejection notes for you to understand that this industry is all about persistence. Go buy some stamps.

7. I will improve my writing space

An ergonomic desk is a productive desk. There are lots of factors to take into consideration, from height of your monitor and proper chair dimensions to placement of your mouse and position of your feet. This chart uses your height and several other factors to diagram the ideal set up for you and Lifehacker has more tips. While you?re at it, remove distractions. The television? Cage of dancing hamsters? Desk clutter? It?s all got to go.

8. I will limit my use of social media and/or non-essential internet to X minutes per day

Speaking of distractions, let?s talk about the internet. For most people, there is no bigger time suck. It is like having a beeping file cabinet full of baby animal pictures, porn, and notes from friends next to your desk while you try to work. Oh, and the information you need to research your book is somewhere in there too, so good luck with that. If this is your January resolution, you could try software that blocks distracting sites or sheer willpower, but if you?re serious, you need to remove temptation entirely. If possible, disconnect the internet from the computer you use for writing. I don?t mean turning the AirPort off on your Mac, because you?re still only two clicks away from the circus that is the Internet. I mean making it pretty much impossible to connect without some serious effort. Have a friend change your WiFi password to something you?ll never guess. If you have, say, a desktop and a laptop, disconnect the desktop from the internet and write with it. Then use the laptop when you need to research, check email, or read LitReactor. The more inconvenient it is to get to the wonders of the web, the better off you?ll be. Set a timer to keep yourself in check when you?re on Facebook. Again, it?s only four weeks.

9. I will take a writing course

Signing up and committing to a writing course, whether here on LitReactor or at some in-person facility near you, will give you structure, deadlines, and perhaps most importantly, people who will hold you accountable and expect something of you on the regular. An accountabili-buddy if you will. Whatever your goal, it will help tremendously to have someone who is expecting something of you. It works with any of these. If you aim to write X words per day, have someone (preferably someone who is unwilling to listen to your rationalizations and excuses) see if you?ve met your goal at the end of the week. Let them know that if you?ve failed to meet the goal, they have your permission to pour a pitcher of eggnog onto you and your freshly laundered sheets whilst you sleep. You?re only going to let that happen once.

10. I will submit X stories to a workshop

Maybe your work isn?t ready to submit to a publisher. Or maybe you?re not sure if it?s ready. If you?ve been writing with no feedback from the outside world, your self-doubt or self-confidence can bounce around your brain until it multiplies tenfold and you?ve lost touch with reality. Submitting your work to the LitReactor workshop or to a local writers group that you meet with in person will provide you with a reality check. It can be unnerving?nay, terrifying?to show your work to others for the first time; just remember to aim for progress, not perfection.

11. I will do a public reading

Resolutions work best when they are tied to consequences. If you?ve been shying away from reading your work in public, decide on a reward if you follow through and punishment if you don?t. Commit to them. If you know that chickening out again will mean listening to six hours of Skrillex?s ?Bangarang? on repeat while an angry monkey throws feces at you, you?re going to read your damn story, particularly if doing so will earn you that new jacket or iWhatever you?ve been eyeing.?

12. I will fix a weakness in my writing

Is there a particular grammatical issue that plagues your writing? Do you spell like a six-year-old on a sugar high? Do you overuse a particular word or phrase? Could your vocabulary be expanded? Identify your weakness then spend the month overcoming it. Chart your progress in some visual way?a gold star on the calendar for every day you catch and avoid a particular error, a line chart of the number of misspelled words per thousand words, one of those color-in thermometer drawings sales people use that denotes the number of words you?ve added to your vocabulary this month. Any kind of visual representation of progress will remind you to keep going.

13. I will exercise more

This is one of those indirect ways to improve your writing. As writers, we spend way too much time hunched over keyboards and sitting on our asses. You don?t have to go hardcore Crossfit here, but adding a bit of movement to your day will clear your head and open you up to new ideas, improve your mood, and generally make you a more productive writer. Tell a few key people what you?re up to and how you?re progressing so that they can support you when you?re doing well and shame you into getting back on the wagon when you fall off.

Be always at war with your vices, at peace with your neighbors, and let each new year find you a better man."
?Benjamin Franklin

As for me, I resolve to minimize other commitments, write a minimum of 1,000 words daily, finish a chapter of my novel, and read three books during January. So who's with me, and what's your January 2013 resolution?

Dot Earth: The Unfulfilled Promise of 'Promised Land'

I recently attended a Manhattan screening of ?Promised Land,? a new feature film written by and starring Matt Damon?and John Krasinski?that aims to examine America?s natural gas drilling boom as a case study in ?what happens when real people and real money collide,? as Krasinski explained in publicity materials.

The film opens Friday in New York City and Los Angeles and then expands to more theaters in early January. My sense is that it will not satisfy many people ? either as a drama or a potential weapon (for either side) in the fight over hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, the drilling method that has opened vast regions of the country underlain with gas-rich shale to exploitation.?

An eager young industry deal closer, played by Damon, is dispatched to rural Pennsylvania to push presumably unwary village folk into leasing their farmland. But he runs into more than he expects ? both from the community and his own company ? and ends up sympathizing with a culture that values land, water and tradition more than money.

The plot has nearly all of the beats, but ? regrettably ? little of the heart and soul of the whimsical, near mystical 1983 film ?Local Hero.? In the new film rural Pennsylvania is a stand-in for coastal Scotland and America?s shale gas bounty takes the place of North Sea oil.

The filmmakers, led by director Gus Van Sant, could have drawn on the real and often wrenching drama in such regions ? the struggle between landowners and politicians eager for a way out of longstanding economic decline and those fearing contamination, industrial hazards or a loss of rural character. In my travels last spring and summer in Pennsylvania and New York communities situated over the gas-rich Marcellus shale, I saw plenty of this. Tom Wilber?s fine book on the gas rush in the Northeast, ?Under the Surface,? probably came out too recently to provide source material for the filmmakers, but depicts the regional tensions in vivid detail. (I recommend that you read Wilber?s thoughtful, informed assessment of the film.)

While the film nicely conveys the textures of small-town life in gas regions, its main characters too often border on caricature.?The industry duo moves from farmhouse to farmhouse, facing a sequence of lone, gullible property owners signing leases over a cup of coffee. That might have been commonplace in 2008 or so in Pennsylvania and other early frontiers in the gas boom, but the norm these days in gas country is?savvy landowner associations?that approach gas deals with skepticism and lawyers.

The plot at first seems crafted to provide no easy answers. An impassioned environmentalist (Krasinki?s character) is as unappealing as Damon and his equally duplicitous partner, played by?Frances McDormand. While the industry team offers town officials manila envelopes stuffed with cash, the activist conducts an absurd classroom demonstration ? drizzling a toy farm with toxic chemicals and then igniting it ? to make his point.

Whether because of budget constraints or by design, the movie never shows drilling itself, leaving the specter of the industrial invasion of rural America to the imagination of the townsfolk and audience. One way or the other, this works to its dramatic advantage.

The central tension in the story surrounds a planned vote by the town that would ban or allow gas drilling. From Ohio through Pennsylvania and New York, there?s been a building push to fight gas drilling by taking control of energy extraction at the local level through home rule.?Tom Wilber, again, is an ideal guide?to how this is playing out (mostly in the courts).

Unfortunately, any prospects of a compelling denouement evaporate in the film?s final act, when the plot veers cartoonishly, doing for the gas industry what John Grisham has long done for big law firms.

Nuance leaves the theater.

In the end, because of such missteps, the tussle?around?the film in recent months between?environmentalists and their allies?and?industry and its supporters?ends up (sadly) more interesting than what appears on the screen.

Web-based info may not increase cancer screening

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Offering women information on colon cancer screening via the web does not get them to take up screening any more effectively than printed materials, according to a new study.

"It's disappointing that the web didn't have more effect," said Dr. David Weinberg of Fox Chase Cancer Center in Philadelphia, the report's lead author.

Although the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force recommends that adults between ages 50 and 75 get screened regularly for colorectal cancer, about 40 percent of people don't follow those guidelines.

To raise awareness of the recommendations and encourage people to go get screened, researchers have developed a variety of approaches, Weinberg said, including videos and printed materials. But none of these "have been tremendously successful," he added.

Dr. Hamant Roy, director of gastroenterology research at NorthShore University HealthSystem in Evanston, Illinois, said one method that has been shown to be effective is simply having doctors spend time with their patients to talk about the cancer tests.

"But one of the issues is they have to see more and more people with less and less time, so it gets really hard to have these discussions with patients," said Roy, who was not involved in the new study.

To see whether the web might provide an easily accessible and inexpensive alternative for getting people to comply with screening recommendations, Weinberg and his colleagues asked 865 women who were coming in for routine gynecology appointments to participate in the study.

Of those, 171 saw their doctor as normal, 349 also received printed materials about colon cancer screening at the time of their visit and 345 were offered access to a web site that contained the same information as the printed matter.

Included in the materials was information about the benefits of screening and harms of going unscreened, as well as background on the various types of colon cancer screen available: a stool test once a year, a sigmoidoscopy every five years or a colonoscopy every 10 years.

All the women were eligible to get screened for colon cancer based on their age and health status.

Four months after the doctor visit, however, roughly 12 percent of the women - regardless of whether they received the extra information or not - had gotten a colon cancer screen.

Roy called the numbers "dismal."

"At the end of the day, something is better than nothing," he said, but compared to screening rates for breast cancer, the uptake for colorectal cancer screening was quite low.

Among the women in the study, published in the Archives of Internal Medicine, 73 percent had received a mammogram in the past year.

On the other hand, Weinberg said, "you might argue their participation in the study did manage to raise their interest level enough" to get screened.

Not enough, however, to get most of the women to even access the website Weinberg's group had developed.

Only 24 percent had logged on, according to the researchers' records, and just 16 percent of the women remembered going to the website.

Weinberg still thinks there might be ways that the web could be helpful.

"I think that the web has great promise...the question is, how do you get people to look at it in the first place?" he said.

Perhaps following up with people to ask them about their experience on the website might improve their participation, he suggested.

Roy agreed that it would be premature to toss out the web as a potential tool for increasing screening rates.

"It seems like the energy to get people over the hump to get colorectal screening is higher than simply passively going to a website. I think the website is maybe helpful, but there needs to be more help to get them over the edge," he said.

Snowstorm heads east after South twisters; 3 dead

MOBILE, Ala. (AP) ? An enormous storm system that dumped snow and sleet on the nation's midsection and unleashed damaging tornadoes around the Deep South began punching its way toward the Northeast on Wednesday, slowing holiday travel.

Post-Christmas travelers braced for flight delays and a raft of weather warnings for drivers, a day after rare winter twisters damaged buildings in Louisiana and Alabama.

Snow and ice covered roads in southern Illinois and southern Indiana early Wednesday. Officials urged residents to stay home if they can. State police reported numerous slide-off accidents in the Evansville, Ind., area and white-out conditions on Interstate 64 in Indiana with wind gusts around 30 mph.

The storm system headed from the Gulf Coast to New England has been blamed for three deaths and several injuries, though no one was killed outright in the tornadoes. In snowy Arkansas, the storm left more than 189,000 customers without electricity Wednesday, utility Entergy Arkansas said.

Severe thunderstorms were forecast for the Carolinas while a line of blizzard and winter storm warnings stretched from Arkansas up the Ohio River to New York and on to Maine.

Thirty-four tornadoes were reported in Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama during the outbreak Tuesday, the National Weather Service said.

Rick Cauley's family was hosting relatives for Christmas when tornado sirens went off in Mobile. Not taking any chances, he and his wife, Ashley, hustled everyone down the block to take shelter at the athletic field house at Mobile's Murphy High School in Mobile.

It turns out, that wasn't the place to head.

"As luck would have it, that's where the tornado hit," Cauley said. "The pressure dropped and the ears started popping and it got crazy for a second." They were all fine, though the school was damaged, as were a church and several homes, but officials say no one was seriously injured.

Camera footage captured the approach of the large funnel cloud.

Mobile was the biggest city hit by numerous twisters. Along with brutal, straight-line winds, the storms knocked down countless trees, blew the roofs off homes and left many Christmas celebrations in the dark. Torrential rains drenched the region and several places saw flash flooding.

More than 325 flights around the U.S. were canceled as of Wednesday morning, according to the flight tracker FlightAware.com. The cancelations were mostly spread around airports that had been or soon would be in the path of the storm.

Holiday travelers in the nation's much colder midsection battled treacherous driving conditions from freezing rain and blizzard conditions from the same fast-moving storms. In Arkansas, highway department officials said the state was fortunate the snowstorm hit on Christmas Day when many travelers were already at their destinations.

Texas, meanwhile, dealt with high winds and slickened highways.

On Tuesday, winds toppled a tree onto a pickup truck in the Houston area, killing the driver, and a 53-year-old north Louisiana man was killed when a tree fell on his house. Icy roads already were blamed for a 21-vehicle pileup in Oklahoma, and the Highway Patrol there says a 28-year-old woman was killed in a crash on a snowy U.S. Highway near Fairview.

Trees fell on homes and across roadways in several communities in southern Mississippi and Louisiana. Mississippi Gov. Phil Bryant declared a state of emergency, saying eight counties reported damages and some injuries.

It included McNeill, where a likely tornado damaged a dozen homes and sent eight people to the hospital, none with life-threatening injuries, said Pearl River County emergency management agency director Danny Manley.

The snowstorm that caused numerous accidents pushed out of Oklahoma late Tuesday, carrying with it blizzard warnings for parts of northeast Arkansas, where 10 inches of snow was forecast. Freezing rain clung to trees and utility lines in Arkansas and winds gusts up to 30 mph whipped them around, causing about 71,000 customers to lose electricity for a time.

Christmas lights also were knocked out with more than 100,000 customers without power for at least a time in Texas, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Mississippi, Louisiana and Alabama.

Blizzard conditions were possible for parts of Illinois, Indiana and Kentucky up to Cleveland with predictions of several inches to a foot of snow. By the end of the week, that snow was expected to move into the Northeast with again up to a foot predicted

Jason Gerth said the Mobile tornado passed by in a few moments and from his porch, he saw about a half-dozen green flashes in the distance as transformers blew. His home was spared.

"It missed us by 100 feet and we have no damage," Gerth said.

In Louisiana, quarter-sized hail was reported early Tuesday in the western part of the state and a WDSU viewer sent a photo to the TV station of what appeared to be a waterspout around the Lake Pontchartrain Causeway in New Orleans. There were no reports of crashes or damage.

Some mountainous areas of Arkansas' Ozark Mountains could get up to 10 inches of snow, which would make travel "very hazardous or impossible" in the northern tier of the state from near whiteout conditions, the weather service said.

The holiday may conjure visions of snow and ice, but twisters this time of year are not unheard of. Ten storm systems in the last 50 years have spawned at least one Christmastime tornado with winds of 113 mph or more in the South, said Chris Vaccaro, a National Weather Service spokesman in Washington, via email.

The most lethal were the storms of Dec. 24-26, 1982, when 29 tornadoes in Oklahoma, Missouri, Arkansas, Tennessee and Mississippi killed three people and injured 32.

In Mobile, a large section of the roof on the Trinity Episcopal Church is missing and the front wall of the parish wall is gone, said Scott Rye, a senior warden at the church in the Midtown section of the city.

On Christmas Eve, the church with about 500 members was crowded for services.

"Thank God this didn't happen last night," Rye said.

Israel rejects US gun lobby claims on its security

FILE - In this March 7, 2008 file photo an ultra-orthodox Jewish youth peers through a bullet-riddled glass door before the funeral of eight yeshiva students killed in a shooting attack at the Mercaz Harav Yeshiva in Jerusalem. America's top gun lobbyist has his facts wrong when he holds up Israel's stationing of armed guards at all schools as a model of how to avoid another massacre like the Dec. 14, 2012 slaughter of 20 first-graders and six adults at a Connecticut elementary school. What's more, the gun laws in Israel, a country where most people serve in the military, are far more onerous than those in the U.S., containing restrictions that would be anathema to the National Rifle Association and its members. What's more, the gun laws in Israel, a country where most people serve in the military, are far more onerous than those in the U.S., containing restrictions that would be anathema to the National Rifle Association and its members. (AP Photo/Kevin Frayer, File)

JERUSALEM (AP) ? Israel's policy on issuing guns is restrictive, and armed guards at its schools are meant to stop terrorists, not crazed or disgruntled gunmen, experts said Monday, rejecting claims by America's top gun lobby that Israel serves as proof for its philosophy that the U.S. needs more weapons, not fewer.

Far from the image of a heavily armed population where ordinary people have their own arsenals to repel attackers, Israel allows its people to acquire firearms only if they can prove their professions or places of residence put them in danger. The country relies on its security services, not armed citizens, to prevent terror attacks.

Though military service in Israel is compulsory, routine familiarity with weapons does not carry over into civilian life. Israel has far fewer private weapons per capita than the U.S., and while there have been gangster shootouts on the streets from time to time, gun rampages outside the context of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict are unheard of.

The National Rifle Association responded to the Dec. 14 killing of 20 first-graders and six adults at a Connecticut elementary school by resisting calls for tighter gun control and calling for armed guards and police at schools. On Sunday, the lobby's chief executive, Wayne LaPierre, invoked his perception of the Israeli school security system to back his proposal.

"Israel had a whole lot of school shootings until they did one thing: They said, 'We're going to stop it,' and they put armed security in every school and they have not had a problem since then," LaPierre said on the NBC News show "Meet the Press."

Israel never had "a whole lot of school shootings." Authorities could only recall two in the past four decades.

In 1974, 22 children and three adults were killed in a Palestinian attack on an elementary school in Maalot, near the border with Lebanon. The attackers' goal was to take the children hostage and trade them for imprisoned militants.

In 2008, another Palestinian assailant killed eight young people, most of them teens, at a nighttime study session at a Jewish religious seminary in Jerusalem. An off-duty soldier who happened to be in the area killed the attacker with his personal firearm.

Israel didn't mandate armed guards at the entrances to all schools until 1995, the Education Ministry said ? more than two decades after the Maalot attack and two years after a Palestinian militant wounded five pupils and their principal in a knifing at a Jerusalem school.

Israel's lightly armed school guards are not the first or the last line of defense. They are backed up by special police forces on motorcycles that can be on the scene within minutes ? again bringing out the main, but not the only, difference between the two systems.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Yigal Palmor spelled it out.

"We're fighting terrorism, which comes under very specific geopolitical and military circumstances. This is not something that compares with the situation in the U.S," Palmor said.

Because it is aimed at preventing terror attacks, Israel's school security system is part of a multi-layered defense strategy that focuses on prevention and doesn't depend on a guy at a gate with a gun.

Intelligence gathering inside Palestinian territories, a large military force inside the West Bank and a barrier of towering concrete slabs and electronic fencing along and inside the West Bank provide the first line of defense.

Guards are stationed not just at schools, but at many other public facilities, including bus and train stations, parking lots, malls and restaurants.

"There are other measures of prevention of an attack taking place, which are carried out 24 hours a day, seven days a week, all over the country," police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said. Many are not for public knowledge.

Gun lobbyists who might think Israel hands out guns freely to keep its citizens safe might be less enamored of Israel's actual gun laws, which are much stricter than those in the U.S. For one thing, notes Yakov Amit, head of the firearms licensing department at the Ministry of Public Security, Israeli law does not guarantee the right to bear arms as the U.S. Constitution does.

"The policy in Israel is restrictive," he said.

Gun licensing to private citizens is limited largely to people who are deemed to need a firearm because they work or live in dangerous areas, Amit said. West Bank settlers, for instance, can apply for weapons licenses, as can residents of communities on the borders with Lebanon and the Gaza Strip. Licensing requires multiple levels of screening, and permits must be renewed every three years. Renewal is not automatic.

The policy is designed "to strike a balance between needs and risks," Amit said. "We know that weapons are a dangerous thing, and in the hands of someone who isn't trained or isn't reliable, it causes problems."

The gap between Israeli gun ownership and U.S. gun ownership is consequently staggering. A total of 170,000 guns are licensed for private use in Israel, or about one gun for every 30 adults.

In addition to the privately held weapons, 130,000 guns are licensed to Israeli security companies, firing ranges, government ministries and companies that operate in areas deemed dangerous. Soldiers who carry assault rifles off base during their regular or reserves service turn them in when they complete their tours of duty.

By contrast, U.S. authorities estimate that at least one-third of all American households have firearms ? and in many cases, not only one.

Americans are also much freer to choose what type of guns they buy. Automatic weapons of the type Lanza used to gun down his victims are banned for private ownership in Israel. It is also rare for a person to be authorized to own more than one firearm, Amit said.

Eighty percent of the 10,000 people who apply yearly for licenses are turned down, he said. In the U.S., people can purchase firearms from private dealers without a background check or a license of any kind.

In Israel, applicants must undergo police screening and medical exams, in part to determine their mental state, Amit said.

Many Israelis receive weapons training in the military. But to be licensed to receive a weapon outside the military, they must undergo at least two hours of additional training, then repeat the training and medical exams every three years before they can renew their licenses.

Anybody who possesses a legally acquired gun waives the right to confidentiality, and authorities cross-reference for new information about the gunholder every three months.

"The point is not to complicate, but to make sure the system makes things safer," Amit said.

Smart Media Technologies:Revolutionizing The Internet

I have just finalized the process of creating my own USP (Unique Selling Proposition) for Smart Media Technologies.

smart media technologies

Why would I take the time to do that?

Well because I wanted to find a way that I could always summarize the benefits that we will offer our members free and paid alike and something that identified with the companies vision as well.

I went through this process with the help of ?a book called The Answer by John Assaraf and Murray Smith awesome book!

I would go so far to say that this book is this generation?s Think And Grow Rich and I mean that.

Here is a quick excerpt from the book on how to craft a very effective USP and then I will break it down and explain how I think Smart Media Technologies extends these benefits to it?s Ultimate Members and Free Users of our product Home Page Pays.

A POWERFUL BENEFIT STATEMENT-NOT FEATURE STATEMENT

?Creating a genuinely effective marketing program starts with developing a clear, concise message that explains exactly what your business does and how that benefits your ideal customer. That is the purpose of a Unique Selling Proposition. Crafting a compelling, powerful USP is a vital step toward differentiating yourself in a competitive market.?

Iran says defeats cyber attack on industrial sites

DUBAI (Reuters) - An Internet virus attacked computers at industrial sites in southern Iran, in an apparent extension of a covert cyber war that initially targeted the country's nuclear facilities, an Iranian official said.

Iran, the world's No. 5 oil exporter, has tightened online security since its uranium enrichment centrifuges were hit in 2010 by the Stuxnet computer worm, which Tehran believes was planted by arch-adversaries Israel or the United States.

The unit tasked with fighting cyber attacks, the Passive Defence Organisation, said a virus had infected several sites in Hormozgan province in recent months but was neutralised.

"Enemies are constantly attacking Iran's industrial units through Internet networks in order to create disruptions," Ali Akbar Akhavan, head of the Hormozgan branch of the organisation, was quoted as saying by the Iranian Students' News Agency on Tuesday.

"This virus has even penetrated some manufacturing industries in Hormozgan province, but with timely measures and the cooperation of skilled hackers in the province, the progress of this virus was halted," Akhavan said.

"As an example, the Bandar Abbas Tavanir Co., a producer of electricity in the province and even adjacent provinces, has been the target of Internet attacks in recent months," he said.

Bandar Abbas is the capital of Hormozgan province on Iran's southern coast and home to an oil refinery and container port.

Israeli officials have threatened military action against Iranian nuclear facilities if Western sanctions on Tehran's banking and oil sectors do not persuade the Islamic Republic to shelve its disputed atomic program.

Western powers suspect Iran is trying to develop the means to produce nuclear weapons. Tehran says it is enriching uranium only for civilian energy.

Iranian authorities said in April that a computer virus was detected inside the control systems of Kharg Island - which handles the vast majority of Iran's crude oil exports - but the terminal had remained operational.

Cyber attackers also slowed Iran's Internet and attacked its offshore oil and gas platforms this year, Iranian officials have said.
