For 20 years, Jimmy Savile's children's show was a highlight of Saturday night family TV on the BBC. But now, British police say 300 people have come forward with claims that Savile abused them during his 60-year broadcasting career. NBC's Annabel Roberts reports.

LONDON -- Fresh allegations of sexual misconduct by late BBC celebrity Jimmy Savile emerged Wednesday.

Terry Pratt, a former hospital porter at Leeds General Infirmary, told the BBC?that Savile, a former BBC radio DJ and television host, would arrive in the 1980s with teenage girls, often two at a time, during early-morning hours and be given the key to nurses? rooms. They would leave before dawn, Pratt said.

The girls seemed "star-struck" and "not very streetwise," he told the BBC, which has come under a judge?s scrutiny for?a?culture and practices that allegedly enabled sexual misconduct to go undetected for?years. Savile hosted the ?Top of the Pops? music show and his family-oriented ?Jim'll Fix It? prime-time show.

When asked why he did not report Savile's alleged hospital visits?at the time, Pratt?said: "We daren't. ... We were in awe of him, to be honest."

Police are probing claims that Savile, who died in?October 2011 at age 84, abused about 300 young people. He was accused of using his fame to coerce teens into having sex with him in his car, his camper and even his BBC dressing rooms.

Police arrested 1970s pop star Gary Glitter earlier this week as part of their investigation. He was held for 10 hours and released on bail for a mid-December court hearing.

The DVR-XD10 connects with an 18-inch USB 2.0 Y-cable through a micro USB port in the rear. Since it's bus-powered, there's no need to worry about AC adapters. Those who prefer the added security of a constant power supply, though, can utilize the drive's connection for an optional power adapter to reap the rewards of wall power. While the Y-cable's 18-inch length is fairly generous, the shorter strand is a paltry four inches long, making it problematic for those who need to utilize two USB ports on opposite ends of their system. Users looking to sidestep this issue altogether would be far better served by the Samsung SE-218BB, which utilizes a standard USB 2.0 cable.

The DVR-XD10 is compatible with Windows (XP, Vista, Windows 7). It can also work on a Mac, though Pioneer doesn't guarantee full compatibility with OS X. In my testing, though, the DVR-XD10 was detected on an iMac using OSX 10.8, and performed perfectly fine. That said, Mac users looking for a degree of certainty should stick with the Samsung SE-218BB, which is fully compatible with both operating systems. Regardless of which drive you choose, however, Mac users will need to download additional burning software since the included Nero software only works with Windows (as is the case with the SE-218BB's preloaded software).

Lastly, it bears noting that users looking for something more future-proof should consider the Editors' Choice?winning Pioneer BDR-XD04 , which combines DVD and Blu-ray burning capability into a similarly slim drive.

Performance
During testing, the DVR-XD10 emitted a faint whisper as the disc spun, and its four rubber feet did an adequate job of absorbing the accompanying vibrations. Although writing media resulted in a slightly louder whirring sound, it never rose to the level of a nuisance and won't raise any eyebrows if used in a public setting. Pioneer advertises read and write speeds of 8x (DVD) and 24x (CD), and during both instances the DVR-XD10 maintained a cool temperature below 90 degrees Fahrenheit (as measured using a Fluke IR Thermometer).

Overall, installing and using the DVR-XD10 was a straightforward endeavor, and I encountered no hiccups when reading and writing DVDs or CDs. Although it's designed to be plugged into two USB ports in order to draw an optimal amount of power from your system, I was able to get by with just one USB port when reading and writing discs. This varies according to system, and for this reason Pioneer strongly recommends using both USB cables to "be safe and avoid write errors" on its site.

The Pioneer DVR-XD10 succeeds in doing exactly what it was designed to do, and it's accordingly a decent choice worth considering for users looking for a portable, frills-free device that allows them access or burn CDs and DVDs. That said, however, if I were pressed to choose an external CD/DVD burner, I'd lean heavily towards the Samsung SE-218BB since it doesn't require a cumbersome USB Y-cable. Those looking for a more future-proof optical drive, on the other hand, should opt for our current Editors' Choice, the Pioneer BDR-XD04, whose Blu-ray functionality ensures its usefulness for a while to come.

Race is tied, but most think Obama will win: Reuters/Ipsos poll

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. presidential race remains a dead heat one week before Election Day but most Americans think President Barack Obama will defeat Republican Mitt Romney, according to a Reuters/Ipsos daily tracking poll released on Tuesday.

Obama leads Romney among likely voters by 47 percent to 46 percent, a statistically insignificant margin, the online survey found. Neither candidate has held a clear lead since early October.

But 53 percent of all registered voters predicted Obama would win the November 6 election, while only 29 percent said Romney would be the victor. A majority also said that they expected Obama to win their state.

That reflects the opinion of many analysts and pollsters who say Obama holds a tactical advantage in the state-by-state battle to win the White House.

Because Obama starts off with a greater likely number of states' electoral votes, Romney must win a higher number of the seven to 10 states that remain truly competitive.

Obama also holds an advantage among the 22 percent who said they have already cast their ballots. Some 55 percent of this group said they had voted for Obama, while 40 percent said they had voted for Romney.

The four-day poll was not affected in a significant way by Hurricane Sandy because only a small fraction of the 3,293 interviews were completed after the storm hit on Monday afternoon, Ipsos pollster Julia Clark said. Some other polls have suspended their activity due to the storm.

The accuracy of Reuters/Ipsos polling is calculated using a credibility interval. In this survey, the credibility interval is 3.4 percentage points for likely voters and 2.9 percentage points for all registered voters.

World Series Game 3: Giants Top Tigers 2-0 Behind Ryan Vogelsong, Tim Lincecum, Sergio Romo

DETROIT -- Nothing is stopping them - not even the Triple Crown winner at the plate with the bases loaded.

Armed and accelerating, the San Francisco Giants became the first team to throw consecutive World Series shutouts in nearly a half-century, blanking Miguel Cabrera and the Detroit Tigers 2-0 on a chilly Saturday night for a commanding 3-0 lead.

"I'll say this: The club is playing well," Giants manager Bruce Bochy said.

No team has ever blown such a huge margin in the World Series. And with the way Ryan Vogelsong, Tim Lincecum and the Giants are pitching, it seemed unlikely the Tigers would even score a run, yet alone win a game.

Gregor Blanco hit an RBI triple and trotted home on Brandon Crawford's single in the second inning, and that was ample for the Giants. Timely hits, combined with another dominant effort on the mound and sharp defense put them close to their second title in three years.

After playing a nearly perfect Game 3, the Giants will turn to Mr. Perfect Game himself - ace Matt Cain - to try for a sweep Sunday against Max Scherzer.

At this rate, it appeared only a bailout by the San Francisco staff could help the Motor City.

Don't count on it. Switching to an AL park, chilly weather and a crowd of towel-waving fans ready to rock didn't slow `em down at all.

"Well, it's a good situation, but there's nothing been done yet," Bochy said. "It's a number, just like I said about two. Now it's three. But that's not the Series."

The Giants won their franchise-record sixth straight postseason game, and haven't trailed in any of them. The Tigers, coming off a sweep of the Yankees in the AL championship series, haven't held a lead in the Series.

"We're not forcing anything, we're just not getting it done," Tigers star Prince Fielder said.

"Obviously, you never visualize this kind of thing happening," he said.

Vogelsong, a career journeyman whose path to the World Series took a detour to Japan, improved to 3-0 with a 1.09 ERA in four starts this postseason.

"I knew my stuff was pretty good," Vogelsong said. "I was really pumped up to be out there."

Vogelsong induced two early double plays, then faced his stiffest test in the fifth.

The bases were loaded with one out when Vogelsong fanned rookie Quintin Berry. That brought up Cabrera, honored on the field before the game with an actual blue-and-gold crown for his Triple Crown accomplishments.

With the fans chanting "M-V-P!" and likely sensing the whole Series was riding on this at-bat, Vogelsong seemed completely calm while chewing gum. He won the matchup, too, getting an easy popup that prompted Cabrera to slam his bat to the ground and elicited cheers in the San Francisco dugout.

"We couldn't get the killer hit or the killer blow," Tigers manager Jim Leyland said.

Lincecum took over with two outs in the sixth, and the two-time Cy Young Award winner looked as if he had been coming out of the bullpen his whole life and shut down the Tigers.

Closer Sergio Romo finished off the combined five-hitter with his second save of the Series.

Blanco punctuated the ninth inning with his latest fancy grab, a sprinting catch into foul territory in left field.

Combined with Madison Bumgarner's effort in Game 2, San Francisco threw the first consecutive shutouts in the Series since Baltimore in 1966, when Jim Palmer, Wally Bunker and Dave McNally did the trick to finish off the Dodgers.

Shut out only twice all year, the Tigers once again looked lost at the plate. When Fielder struck out in the eighth, the fan favorite caused boos to bounce around Comerica Park. Big sluggers with teeny numbers, Cabrera and Fielder are a combined 3 for 19 against the Giants.

"It is what it is," Fielder said.

The fearsome Tigers have totaled a mere three runs and 15 hits while hitting .165 in three games, and were shut out twice in a row for the first time since April 2008.

Only one team in baseball history has overcome a 3-0 deficit in the postseason, with Boston doing it in the 2004 ALCS against the Yankees.

"Well, you don't really have to tell them anything. They can count," Leyland said. "They're big guys, they know what the situation is."

For the Tigers, it was the sixth straight Series loss dating to 2006 against St. Louis. They got a fine effort from pitcher Anibal Sanchez this time, but it wasn't enough against these Giants.

It was 47 degrees at gametime, a drop of 17 from Thursday night at AT&T Park, and the Tigers clearly knew this was their chance to pull back into the Series.

Soon enough, Game 3 took on a familiar look.

During the Giants' early two-run burst, Detroit's body language said all you needed to know about this Series. At one point in-between pitches, Cabrera put his hands on his hips at third base, shortstop Jhonny Peralta scuffed the dirt, second baseman Omar Infante turned his back to the infield, Fielder stared down at first.

The first part of breaking a bad habit is to stop the repetition of it as a reflex. Remember to use the STOP method as a verbal way of getting control of yourself. Say "stop" aloud. Take a break from the thing stressing you out. Own your outcome: Remind yourself what you're trying to achieve. Praise yourself for what you've accomplished so far.

Using index cards, write down suggestions for your break that have nothing to do with food. Perhaps a quick round of solitaire on the computer, or a brief read of a favorite chapter of a book will help. Alternatively you could put on some quiet music if it's convenient to do so.

The Substitution

Part two of healthy habit building is the substitution of good habits for bad ones. We've already interrupted the reflexive snacking that we reach for, now it's time to put something definitively in its place.

Write down some of your favorite substitutions on the same index cards that you used for break ideas. Remember how we discussed water as part of a way of controlling appetite? It can have the same benefit here. If you feel reflexively hungry for comfort food, have a nice tall glass of water in slow, steady sips over five minutes. This will give you the feeling of being full without the calories.

Consider tying each substitution you make to a certain emotion. We feel upset in specific ways, so we should have specific solutions rather than general ones. If getting shouted at unexpectedly makes you antsy, consider taking a quick walk to burn some of the energy. If something comes up that makes you feel sad, pick an activity you know makes you cheerful.

If we simply rely on general solutions, they won't feel as meaningful or helpful. Specific ones that we use in exact circumstances have the power to create more of a connection, and thus become more of a habit.

This is a necessary step because it's hard to use the method of "same time every day" to build this habit, as we don't always know when we're going to want comfort food. But the fact that familiarity builds repetition can be used to our advantage with a little creative thinking.

Get Support

Remember that we haven't gone into this effort alone. We have support groups we can talk to. If comfort eating is becoming a challenge to your efforts to lose weight, tell your support buddy about it. Ask them for help in coming up with the creative substitutions that will keep you from overeating. Ask them if they mind being a comfort-friend in addition to a support partner, and if they can come with you on impromptu excursions to
relax instead of comfort eating.

NYT report: China leader's family now worth $2.7B

China's Premier Wen Jiabao's mother, siblings and children have accumulated huge wealth since Wen was named vice premier in 1998, according to the New York Times.

The family of Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao, a leader known for his humble roots and compassion for ordinary Chinese, has accumulated massive wealth during his time in power, the New York Times reported on Friday.

"A review of corporate and regulatory records indicates that the prime minister's relatives, some of whom have a knack for aggressive deal-making, including his wife, have controlled assets worth at least $2.7 billion," it said.

The Times' websites in English and Chinese were blocked in China on Friday morning, and searches for the New York Times as well as the names of Wen's children and wife were blocked on China's main Twitter-like microblog service.

Wen's mother, siblings and children have amassed the majority of the wealth since Wen was named vice premier in 1998, the Times reported. Wen was promoted to the premiership in 2003.

Giving one example, the Times said partnerships controlled by Wen's relatives and their friends and colleagues held up to $2.2 billion in stock in Ping An Insurance (Group) Co of China Ltd in 2007, the last year those stock holdings were disclosed in public documents.

Wen's 90-year-old mother had one investment in Ping An that was worth $120 million five years ago, the newspaper added.

The Times said it presented its findings to the Chinese government for comment. The Foreign Ministry declined to respond. Members of Wen's family also declined to comment or did not respond to requests for comment, the Times said.

The State Council - China's cabinet, of which Wen is nominally the head - did not immediately respond to Reuters' requests for comment.

'Ulterior motives'
When asked about the Times story, Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei told journalists Friday that "relevant press reports are steering China's image driven by ulterior motives."

Xi's relatives have investments in companies with assets of $375 million, and an 18 percent indirect stake in a company with $1.7 billion in assets, Bloomberg news reported in June.

Bloomberg's website has been blocked in China since that report was published, underscoring the sensitivity of the Party and government towards such revelations about top leaders.

In the case of Wen and his relatives, the names of family members "have been hidden behind layers of partnerships and investment vehicles involving friends, work colleagues and business partners," the New York Times said.

It said Wen's family's holdings include a villa development project in Beijing, a tire factory in northern China, a company involved in building some of the venues for Beijing's 2008 Olympics including the "Bird's Nest" main stadium, and Ping An Insurance, one of the world's largest financial services companies.

Wen's younger brother has a company that was awarded more than $30 million in government contracts and subsidies for waste water treatment and medical waste disposal in some of China's biggest cities, and controls $200 million in assets in a number of companies, the Times said, basing its estimate on government records.

The Chinese public has a fondness for Wen, who is often referred to as "Grandpa Wen" in the media, for his common touch with ordinary Chinese, and his penchant for rushing to console victims of disasters, such as earthquakes and major accidents.

'Enchanted' figurine likely Spain's oldest

It's missing a head and some limbs, but an "enchanted" ceramic idol recently unearthed near Barcelona is thought to be the most ancient human figurine ever found in Spain, archaeologists say.

The 3-inch (8-centimeter)-long pottery fragment was uncovered over the summer during excavations at Can Sadurn? cave in Begues, Barcelona province ? a site perhaps best known for the discovery of the oldest evidence of beer-drinking in Europe. Researchers say the statuette is 6,500 years old, making it the most ancient human figurine from Catalonia, as well as the whole Iberian Peninsula.

The majority of Neolithic idols found in the Mediterranean are female, but the lack of breasts on the torso suggests this figurine is male, the researchers said. Holes in the arms indicate it was strung up with a cord or a leather strap to be used as a necklace or to decorate a cave home.

The figure is thought to have had some religious or spiritual importance, and "all its characteristics point towards what, in prehistory, can be defined as an idol," read a statement about the discovery from the University of Barcelona.

Because of its possibly magical significance and the fact that Begues residents are sometimes given the Catalan nickname "Els Encantats" ("The Enchanted"), archaeologists have called the figurine "El Encantat de Begues."

The lower limbs seem to be attached to the torso at an angle, suggesting, the researchers believe, that when the figurine was whole it would have been in a sitting position or would have had its legs bent. From what's left of its arms, the archaeologists believe its upper limbs were outstretched. The team also speculates that the figure's head would have been mobile and interchangeable, fitting into the neck-hole like a puzzle piece.

The dig at Can Sadurn? is led by researchers from the University of Barcelona and the organization CIPAG (Collectiu per la Investigaci? de la Prehist?ria i l'Arqueologia del Garraf-Ordal). The team hopes further excavations at the site will turn up other fragments of the figurine.

China's Long March 3C lofts another Compass-G into orbit ...

The Chinese were back in action on Thursday, launching the sixth Compass-G satellite into orbit via their Long March 3C (Chang Zheng 3C)?launch vehicle. The 15:33 UTC launch from the LC2 launch complex of the Xichang Satellite Launch Center, in Sichuan Province marked 15th successful orbital launch this year for China.

China Launch Again:

According to information acquired by nasaspaceflight.com, the new satellite will probably be located at 110.5 degree East on the geostationary orbit, replacing one of the original Beidou-1 satellites (Beidou-1C) that is approaching ten years in orbit.

The Compass Navigation Satellite System (CNSS) is China?s second-generation satellite navigation system approved by the Chinese government in 2004, and is capable of providing continuous, real-time passive 3D geo-spatial positioning and speed measurement.

The long-term goal is to develop a global navigation satellite network similar to the GPS and GLONASS by 2020 eventually consisting a constellation of 35 vehicles, including 27 MEO (21,500 km orbits) satellites,?three IGSO satellites (inclined at 55 degrees) and?five GSO satellites.

The system will be dual use, based around?a civilian service that will?provide an accuracy of 10 meters in the user position, 0.2 m/s on the user velocity and 50 nanoseconds in time accuracy; and the military and authorized user?s service, providing higher accuracies. The first phase of the project will see the coverage of the Chinese territory but in the future the Compass constellation will cover the entire globe.

Developed from the?DFH-3B satellite platform, the Compass-G satellites orbit the planet on geostationary orbits and have a lifespan of 12 to 15 years. The satellites transmit signals on the: 1195.14-1219.14MHz, 1256.52-1280.52MHz, 1559.05-1563.15MHz and 1587.69-1591.79MHz, carrier frequencies.

The previous Beidou-2 ?Compass? launch took place on September 18th, 2012, when a Chang Zheng-3B/E orbited the Beidou-14 ?Compass-M5? (38874 2012-050A) and the Beidou-15 ?Compass-M6? (38775 2012-050B) satellites. The previous Compass-G orbited was the Beidou-11 ?Compass-G5? launched on February 24th, 2012.

DFH-3B is an updated version of DFH-3 bus, a communications satellite bus whose capability is between high and medium ones. It adopts hexahedral structure, consisting of propulsion, service and communication modules, communication antennas and solar arrays and adopts 3-axis stabilized attitude control.

Its dimensions are 2200mm ? 2000mm ? 3100mm, and its mass is 3,800 kg with a payload mass of 400 kg to 450 kg. This satellite bus is applicable to communications and navigation satellites and deep space probes through adaptive modification.

This was the eight flight of the CZ-3C Chang Zheng-3C launch vehicle that is primarily used for launching satellite to Geostationary Transfer Orbit (GTO).

This rocket was developed to fill the gap between the CZ-3A Chang Zheng-3A and the CZ-3B Chang Zheng-3B, having a payload capacity of 3,800 kg for GTO. This is a three stage launch vehicle identical to the CZ-3B but only using two strap-on boosters on its first stage.

CZ-3C provides two types of fairing and two kinds of fairing encapsulating process and four different payload interfaces, which is the same as CZ-3B launch vehicle. The various fairing and interface adapter and the suitable launch capacity make CZ-3C a good choice for user to choose the launch service.

The development of the CZ-3C started in February 1999. The rocket has a liftoff mass of 345,000 kg, sporting structure functions to withstand the various internal and external loads on the launch vehicle during transportation, hoisting and flight.

The rocket structure also combines all sub-systems together and is composed of two strap on boosters, first stage, second stage, third stage and payload fairing.

The first two stages as well as the two strap on boosters use hypergolic (N2O4/UDMH) fuel while the third stage uses cryogenic (LOX/LH2) fuel. The total length of the CZ-3C is 54.838 meters, with a diameter of 3.35 meters on the core stage and 3.00 meters on the third stage.

On the first stage, the CZ-3C uses a DaFY6-2 engine with a 2961.6 kN thrust and a specific impulse of 2556.2 Ns/kg. The first stage diameter is 3.35 m and the stage length is 26.972 m.

Each strap on booster is equipped with a DaFY5-1 engine with a 704.4 kN thrust and a specific impulse of 2556.2 Ns/kg. The strap on booster diameter is 2.25 m and the strap on booster length is 15.326 m.

The second stage is equipped with a DaFY20-1 main engine (742 kN / 2922.57 Ns/kg) and four DaFY21-1 vernier engines (11.8 kN / 2910.5 Ns/kg each). The second stage diameter is 3.35 m and the stage length is 9.470 m.

The third stage is equipped with two YF-75 engines developing 78.5 kN each and with a specific impulse of 4312 Ns/kg. The fairing diameter of the CZ-3C is 4.00 meters and has a length of 9.56 meters.

The typical flight sequence of the CZ-3C for a standard GTO mission starts at T-0s with the ignition of the first stage engine and the two strap on boosters. Pitch over maneuver comes at T+10s. The strap on boosters end of ignition takes place at T+127.5s followed by boosters separation at T+129.0s.

First stage shutdown takes place at T+145.2 s, followed at T+146.7s by the first stage separation and ignition of the second stage. Separation of the fairing happens at T+258.7s. Second stage main engine shutdown takes place at T+328.0 s and second stage vernier shutdown occurs five seconds latter.

The separation of the second stage and the first ignition of the third stage take place at T+334.0s. This first ignition will last for 5 minutes and 16.6 seconds, ending at T+650.6s. After the first shutdown of the third stage the vehicle enters on a coast phase at T+654.1s, which will end at T+1323.2s with the second ignition of the third stage. This will end at T+1474.9s, beginning the velocity adjustment maneuver that lasts for 20 seconds.

Spacecraft separation occurs at T+1574.9s.

The first launch of the CZ-3C Chang Zheng-3C launch vehicle took place on April 25, 2008 when it orbited the first TL-1 Tianlian-1 tracking and data relay satellite.

The Xichang Satellite Launch Centre is situated in the Sichuan Province, south-western China and is the country?s launch site for geosynchronous orbital launches.

Equipped with two launch pads (LC2 and LC3), the centre has a dedicated railway and highway lead directly to the launch site. The Command and Control Centre is located seven kilometers south-west of the launch pad, providing flight and safety control during launch rehearsal and launch.

Down range Tracking and Control stations of the launch center are located in Xichang City and Yibin City of Sichuan Province, and Guiyang City of Guizhou Province. Each of them houses tracking and measurement equipment for the powered phase of a launch vehicle flight.

Other facilities on the Xichang Satellite Launch Centre are the Launch Control Centre, propellant fuelling systems, communications systems for launch command, telephone and data communications for users, and support equipment for meteorological monitoring and forecasting.

During 1993-1994 Xichang underwent extensive modernization and expansion, in part due to the requirements of the CZ-3 launcher family and in part to meet commercial customer needs.

The first launch from Xichang took place at 12:25UTC on January 29, 1984, when the CZ-3 Chang Zheng-3 (CZ3-1) launched the Shiyan Weixing (14670 1984-008A) communications satellite into orbit.

FTC helps slow tech support scam; don't give remote computer access

?Oh, I think I?ve done something horrible,? the woman?s voice spoke quickly and somewhat wavering. ?I think I?ve lost control of my computer, and I don?t know what to do.?

Without stopping, she continued to describe how there was a ?wicked? virus on her home computer and that Microsoft Tech Support had contacted her to say they needed to fix her computer.

When she took a breath, I asked if they were in her computer at this time.

?Why, yes! I don?t want this virus to take over my entire computer,? she says.

In spite of the major efforts to close down the tech support scam, calls continue to plague unsuspecting Snake River Region computer owners.?In the end, the con artists charge hundreds of dollars to remotely access and ?fix? the computers.

After calming her down, explaining the scam, I had her simply unplug the computer, call a trusted computer repair shop, and take no further calls from the phone number.

On Oct. 4,?the Federal Trade Commission cracked a major international tech support scam?in which telemarketers masquerade as major computer companies, con consumers into believing their computers are riddled with viruses, spyware and other malware, and then charge hundreds of dollars to remotely access and ?fix? the consumers? computers.

The FTC charged that the five operations ? mostly based in India ? target English-speaking consumers in the United States, Canada, Australia, Ireland, New Zealand and the U.K. from telemarketing boiler rooms.

Telemarketers claimed affiliation with Dell, Microsoft, McAfee and Norton, and told intended victims malware was detected by the company and needed immediate removal. The scammers direct consumers to a?utility area of their computer?to show that the computer had been infected. ?The scammers charge from $49 to $450 to remove it.? When consumers agreed to pay the fee, the scammers took remote access to the victim?s ?computer to ?remove? non-existent malware and downloaded otherwise free programs.

A sixth company lured computer owners through Google ads that appeared when consumers searched for their computer company?s tech support telephone number.

When in operation, FTC claims, tens of thousands of people were tricked into paying removal fees that are ?standard warnings and errors?generated by software companies, and are not viruses.

About 700 O?ahu high school students got an up-close-and-personal look at healthcare, thanks to Kapi?olani Community College?s first ever Health-E Fair. There were health screenings, exhibits and demonstrations, from wheel chair racing to CPR training to tests that determine your fitness age.

?We had to do a vertical jump and we tested how high we can jump,? said Kahuku High School student Jahya Costa.

?We learned how to do CPR and how to hold your palm correctly,? said Angelo Ruiz, a sophomore at Mililani High School. ?And how to do 30 compressions every time until you get a response.?

? EMT (emergency medical technician) or EMS (emergency medical specialist) in general is mainly to help the community,? said Kapi?olani student Zachary Suniga, who studying to become an EMT. ?So by us teaching them how to help one another, we might save another life.?

Kapi?olani has long been known for it?s accredited health academic programs, offering degrees and certificates in a variety of subjects including emergency medical services, exercise and sports science, pharmacy technician, radiolog technology, medical laboratory technician and nursing.

?It?s time for us to show these programs and the skills that these students do and the workforce they then end up working for the state,? said Patricia O?Hagan, the dean of health academic programs at Kapi?olani.

The fair gave the high school students an opportunity to engage with the college students while learning more about potential careers and what the college has to offer.

?A lot of them are interested in the medical field or something health related so it is good to talk to them about this,? said Kapi?olani nursing student Rowen Gargas.

?Trying to sell our program to any student who wants to come,? said Iokepa Alcantra, who is studying exercise and sports science at the college. ?And it?s open, it?s very enjoyable.?

?It?s really nice and informational and we get to know what programs are available,? said Ruiz.

?I want to go into physical therapy, so it helps a lot,? said Costa.

But the top priority of the fair is to get the high school students who attended to think about their own health and wellness.

The message is simple.

?Just a healthy lifestyle, period,? said Alcantra.

Keck observations bring weather of Uranus into sharp focus

ScienceDaily (Oct. 17, 2012) ? In 1986, when Voyager swept past Uranus, the probe's portraits of the planet were "notoriously bland," disappointing scientists, yielding few new details of the planet and its atmosphere, and giving it a reputation as a bore of the solar system.

Now, however, thanks to a new technique applied at the Keck Observatory, Uranus is coming into sharp focus through high-resolution infrared images, revealing in incredible detail the bizarre weather of the seventh planet from the sun.

The images were released in Reno, Nev. today (Oct. 17, 2012) at a meeting of the American Astronomical Society's Division of Planetary Sciences and provide the best look to date of Uranus's complex and enigmatic weather.

The planet's deep blue-green atmosphere is thick with hydrogen, helium and methane, Uranus's primary condensable gas. Winds blow mainly east to west at speeds up to 560 miles per hour, in spite of the small amounts of energy available to drive them. Its atmosphere is almost equal to Neptune's as the coldest in our solar system with cloud-top temperatures in the minus 360-degree Fahrenheit range, cold enough to freeze methane.

Large weather systems, which are probably much less violent than the storms we know on Earth, behave in bizarre ways on Uranus, explains Larry Sromovsky, a University of Wisconsin-Madison planetary scientist who led the new study using the Keck II telescope.

"Some of these weather systems," Sromovsky notes, "stay at fixed latitudes and undergo large variations in activity. Others are seen to drift toward the planet's equator while undergoing great changes in size and shape. Better measures of the wind fields that surround these massive weather systems are the key to unraveling their mysteries."

To get a better picture of atmospheric flow on Uranus, Sromovsky and colleagues Pat Fry, also of UW-Madison, Heidi Hammel of the Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy (AURA), and Imke de Pater of the University of California at Berkeley, used new infrared techniques to detect smaller, more widely distributed weather features whose movements can help scientists trace the planet's pattern of blustery winds.

"We're seeing some new things that before were buried in the noise," says Sromovsky, a senior staff scientist at UW-Madison's Space Science and Engineering Center.

"My first reaction to these images was 'wow' and then my second reaction was WOW," says AURA's Heidi Hammel, a co-investigator on the new observations and an expert on the atmospheres of the solar system's outer planets. "These images reveal an astonishing amount of complexity in Uranus's atmosphere. We knew the planet was active, but until now much of the activity was masked by noise in our data."

The complexity of Uranus's weather is puzzling, Sromovsky explains. The primary driving mechanism must be solar energy because there is no detectable internal energy source. "But the sun is 900 times weaker there than on Earth because it is 30 times further from the sun, so you don't have the same intensity of solar energy driving the system," explains Sromovsky. "Thus the atmosphere of Uranus must operate as a very efficient machine with very little dissipation. Yet the weather variations we see seem to defy that requirement."

The new Keck II pictures of the planet, according to Sromovsky, are the "most richly detailed views of Uranus yet obtained by any instrument on any observatory. No other telescope could come close to producing this result."

Sromovsky and his colleagues used Keck II, located on the summit of Hawaii's 14,000-foot extinct volcano Mauna Kea, to capture a series of images that, when combined, help increase the signal to noise ratio and thus tease out weather features that are otherwise obscured. In two nights of observing under superb conditions, Sromovsky's group was able to obtain exposures of the planet that provide a clear view of the planet's cloudy features, including several new to science. The group used two different filters in an effort to characterize cloud features at different altitudes.

"The main objective was to find a larger number of cloud features by detecting those that were previously too subtle to be seen, so we could better define atmospheric motions," Sromovsky notes. New features found by the Wisconsin group include a scalloped band of clouds just south of Uranus's equator and a swarm of small convective features in the north polar regions of the planet, features that have never been seen in the southern polar regions.

"This is a very asymmetric situation," says the Wisconsin scientist. "There is certainly something different going on in those two polar regions."

One possible explanation, is that methane is pushed north by an atmospheric conveyor belt toward the pole where it wells up to form the convective features observed by Sromovsky's group.

"The 'popcorn' appearance of Uranus's pole reminds me very much of a Cassini image of Saturn," adds de Pater.

Saturn's South Pole is characterized by a polar vortex or hurricane surrounded by numerous small cloud features indicative of strong convection, analogous to the heavily precipitating clouds encircling the eye of terrestrial hurricanes, she notes. Her group suggested a similar phenomenon would be present on Neptune, based upon Keck observations of that planet.

"Perhaps we will also see a vortex at Uranus's pole when it comes into view," she says.

The phenomena may be seasonal, Sromovsky notes, but the group has so far been unable to establish a clear seasonal trend in the winds of Uranus.

"Uranus is changing," he says. "We don't expect things at the north pole to stay the way they are now."

The scalloped band of clouds near the planet's equator may indicate atmospheric instability or wind shear: "This is new and we don't fully understand what it means. We haven't seen it anywhere else on Uranus."
