USLS Hosts Service-Learning Conference The LEAD Publications

Two international educators underscored the value of Service-Learning as a tool in the integration of civic engagement into the academic experience of university students.

The two educators ? Dr. Avron Borerz and Dr. Carol Ma ? were the key speakers at the Sept. 28 opening of the First National Service-Learning Conference? sponsored by the New York-based United Board for Christian Higher Education in Asia and hosted by the University of St. La Salle.

?

Dr. ?Boretz is the ?program director in Asia of the United Board while Dr. Ma is the assistant director of the Office of Service-Learning of Lingnan University in Hong Kong, a frontrunner in this field of education in the Asia-Pacific region.

?

S-L PROMOTION IN ASIA

?

He said his organization has been promoting to universities in Asia for about a decade now the concept of Service-Leaning, conducts workshops and also evaluation of learning outcomes, among others.

?

Dr. Ma, on the other hand, emphasized that the changing technology, globalization and trends in the economy has led to the growth of a culture of self-interest that makes Service- Learning relevant, especially that it emphasizes among educators and students the need for social concern and service orientation.

?

OBJECTIVES

?

About 50 educators representing 17 universities and colleges all over the country are attending the two-day conference which aims to provide participants with the opportunity to:

?

-Share best practices in the conduct of Service-Learning

?

-Identifychallenges and gaps encountered in the implementation of S-L programs

?

-Create or nurture continuing linkages among Philippine educational institutions committed to Service-Leanring; and

?

-Promote international exchange and networking withS-L programs abroad.

?

PARTICIPANTS

?

Participants come from De La Salle University, DLSU-Damarinas, the Ateneo universities in Manila, Davao and Zamboanga, Xavier University, Miriam College, San Beda College, St. Scholastica?s College,? Trinity University of Asia;

?

Silliman University, Central Philippine University Easter College of Baguio,? Pilgrim College of Cagayan de Oro City, Southern Christian College in Cotabato,? Fellowship Baptist College in Kabankalan City and USLS.
