Electricity and its Importance to the Modern World

In today's world, it would seem unimaginable to live without electricity. What would man do without television sets, computers, music devices, and other modern equipment which use electrical currents? However, man was only able to use electricity in the 1800s when Alessandro Volta invented the first battery. He gave the world its first continuous source of electric currents. Thereafter, it was discovered that electric currentscould be used to produce heat, light, chemical action, and magnetic effects. This discovery led to various developments in the use of electricity which paved the way to the invention of numerous electrical devices and equipment which modern man now fully enjoys.

But how was electricity discovered? The word "electricity" comes from the Greek word electron, which means amber. It was the Greeks who discovered that when amber was rubbed, it was capable of attracting bits of cork or paper. This attraction later roused man's curiosity and interest which led to more discoveriesin the course of time.

As man continues to enjoy the use of modern equipment, maintaining electric power has become an essential part of this convenience. This is where electricians come in. To install the wiring and control the equipment through which electricity flows in our homes, businesses, and industries, we need electricians. The Bureau of Labor Statistics of the U.S. Department of Labor estimates that around 79 percent of electricians either work in the construction industry or are self-employed. Electricians mostly focus on either maintenance or construction. The former are those who fix and upgrade existing electrical systems and repair electrical equipment.
