Newton-Conover?s Shynese Whitener has signed a letter of intent to play college basketball at Tusculum College.

Whitener, a three-time HDR Sports? All-Greater Hickory performer averaged 17.1 points, 4.8 rebounds and 4.7 assists during her senior season at Newton-Conover.

She also had 3.5 steals per game and was an 82 percent free throw shooter helping the Red Devils to a 25-4 season and Catawba Valley Athletic 2A title.

The 5-foot-8 guard was named to the All-CVAC team four straight years and was the conference Player of the Year in 2009.

?She?s a great all-around smooth guard that can create her own shot,? said Newton-Conover head coach Ike Williams. ?Shynese is an extremely talented player and very coachable. She has so much potential and ability and her game will be fun to watch on the next level.?

The Tigers defeated the sixth-ranked Knights on Monday behind two goals from Daniel Tomberline.

Foard (8-0) got the other goal from Raul Marita.

Will Saenger and Scottie Whitman recorded an assist apiece for the Tigers.

Golf tournament planned to benefit Family Care Center

The 35th Annual Miller Lite Golf Tournament will be held Friday, Saturday and Sunday at Glen Oaks Country Club in Maiden.?

Family Care Center of Catawba Valley, Inc. will be the recipient of the tournament proceeds.? The agency provides housing and services to homeless families with dependent children in their transition to self-sufficiency and independence.?

Primary sponsors are Glen Oaks Country Club, United Beverages of North Carolina, LLC and Newton-Conover Rotary Club.? Additional sponsors for a contribution of $100 may have their business name professionally displayed on a banner at the registration table and scoreboard.?
