Ignorance Isn't Bliss For Relationships ? Minted

Posted by MintedMag on 29 Nov 2012 / 0 Comment

By Jen Clark

When we?re in the midst of a relationship, it can be difficult to take a step back, gain some perspective, and be objective about its future. It?s often tempting to get caught up in the emotions of love. However, when it comes to matters of the heart, the ability to think rationally is never a bad thing.

While no relationship is perfect, there are certain warning signs which should not be overlooked. So if you?re unsure whether the guy you?re dating is ?the one,? take a deep breath and be honest in your assessment of him. The following questions will help you determine if your relationship has underlying fatal flaws.

Is he selfish?

Does he overlook or undermine your needs?? Does he think about himself and his desires even if they are detrimental to you? Is he interested in your thoughts and feelings? Does he exhibit empathy? Narcissists do not make for good partners and selfishness should be a deal breaker. In order to have a healthy relationship, there must be some give with his take.

How?s your communication?

A lack of good communication is the death of many relationships. Specifically, the inability to resolve and move past conflict is a recipe for disaster. In every relationship, there is going to be conflict and the importance is not on its existence, but on how it is handled. Conflict should be seen as a way to improve intimacy and to bring you closer together. If it causes unresolved hurts and grievances, that?s not a very good sign.

What?s your sex life like?

Don?t underestimate the importance of sex and sexual chemistry. If you feel ambivalent about him on a physical level, this is usually an indicator your relationship suffers from deeper problems. As resentments and disappointments build, the sex often suffers. In addition, a successful relationship requires that both people strive to keep the fires burning. If one or both of you is content to live in a passionless arrangement, it doesn?t bode well for your future.

Do you deal with issues of jealousy?

Jealousy is usually a sign of deep insecurity. Men who are possessive or controlling are also emotionally abusive. No matter what we might to tell ourselves, it?s not that he loves you so much he can?t bear to be without you. The reality is it has less to do with his feelings about you and more to do with his feelings about himself. While sharing your life with someone is healthy, the inability to be autonomous isn?t.

Does he have other, healthy relationships?

It?s good to be his ?one and only,? but you can?t be his only relationship. Friends and family are important as well. Likewise, his past relationships can be a warning sign. Does he have a history of brief affairs?? Have his past relationships ended extremely poorly? Does he have more than one marriage and divorce? If so, it might be an indicator he?s not emotionally equipped for relationship success.

Is his checkbook in good shape?

Financial responsibility is a sign of maturity and wise decisions. Beware of men who want to borrow money from you or who look to you to be their ?sugar mama.? We may think we are being helpful, but the reality is we are being used. In a similar way, it?s never a good idea to use to money to hang onto a man. If you feel like you have to buy his love and attention, you?re not in a relationship you should value.

All too often, women become blinded by intense feelings for a man. We ignore potential alarms hoping they will go away on their own. And when the red flags become impossible to ignore, we often try to change him instead of realizing we are in an unhealthy situation. Here?s the truth: No man is perfect. However, when those imperfections are things that make you miserable, it is always better to move on. No woman should attempt to accept the unacceptable.

Qatar, Arab Spring sponsor, jails poet for life

DOHA (Reuters) - A court in Qatar, which has supported Arab uprisings abroad, jailed a local poet for life on Thursday for criticizing the emir and inciting revolt - a sentence that drew outrage and cries of hypocrisy from human rights groups.

In his verses, Muhammad Ibn al-Dheeb al-Ajami praised the Arab Spring revolts that toppled four dictators, often with the help of money and other support from the tiny, energy-rich Gulf state. But he also criticized Qatar's own absolute monarch and spoke, for example, of "sheikhs playing on their Playstations".

"This is a tremendous miscarriage of justice," said defence lawyer Nagib al-Naimi, who conveyed the verdict to Reuters after a trial held behind closed doors in the capital Doha.

At the prison where he has been held for a year, Ajami, 36, later told Reuters he believed the emir, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani, to be "a good man" who must be unaware of his plight. Lawyer Naimi said the defence would appeal. A royal pardon may also be a possibility.

Ajami was not himself allowed in court and Naimi said the defence was barred from making oral arguments, although he contested the prosecution case that Ajami called for revolution in Qatar - an offence which carries the death penalty.

For Amnesty International, Middle East director Philip Luther said in a statement: "It is deplorable that Qatar, which likes to paint itself internationally as a country that promotes freedom of expression, is indulging in what appears to be such a flagrant abuse of that right."

Amnesty described Ajami's arrest in November 2011 as coming after he published a poem named "Jasmine" - for the symbol of the Tunisian revolt in January last year that launched the Arab Spring. In a broad criticism of Gulf rulers, he had written: "We are all Tunisia, in the face of the repressive elite."

"PLAYING WITH PLAYSTATIONS"

Ajami "did not encourage the overthrow of any specific regime", Naimi said. He described the charges as having been "inciting the overthrow of the ruling regime", a capital offence, and criticising the ruler, which is punishable by up to five years imprisonment under the Qatari penal code.

Among offending passages from the poem, translated from Arabic, was the line: "If the sheikhs cannot carry out justice, we should change the power and give it to the beautiful woman."

In another section, Ajami accused a fellow poet of being "with the sheikhs, playing with their Playstations."

Naimi, who has been largely in solitary confinement, spoke to Reuters in the presence of prison guards and others: "The Emir is a good man," he said. "I think he doesn't know that they have me here for a year, that they have put me in a single room.

"If he knew, I would be freed," he said, noting the Qatari ruler's past promotion of a more open society, including his hosting of the groundbreaking television channel Al Jazeera, which has given a voice to many opposition groups abroad.

"This is wrong," Ajami said. "You can't have Al Jazeera in this country and put me in jail for being a poet."

Qatar, a close U.S. ally and major natural gas producer with a large American military base, has escaped the unrest seen in other Arab countries. The emir has taken a high-profile role at times in calling for human rights - for example, when he went to Gaza last month, the first foreign leader there in years.

Al Jazeera has assiduously covered the Arab revolts, though it gave scant coverage to an uprising last year in neighboring Bahrain - ruled by another Gulf Arab monarchy.

The Qatari government has also taken a prominent role in the confrontation between, on the one hand, Sunni Muslim-ruled Arab states like itself and Saudi Arabia and, on the other, non-Arab Iran and its Shi'ite allies in Syria, Lebanon and elsewhere.

"DOUBLE STANDARDS"

Qatar is backing the rebels in Syria's civil war. It supported the NATO-backed uprising in Libya and street protests that ousted rulers in Egypt, Tunisia and Yemen. The emirate's maroon and white flag has been a common sight on the streets of Arab capitals where demonstrators have challenged autocracy.

But freedom of expression is tightly controlled in the small Gulf state, home to less than two million people. Self-censorship is prevalent among national newspapers and other media outlets. Qatar has no organized political opposition.

In October, Human Rights Watch criticized what it said was a double standard on freedom of expression in Qatar and urged the emir not to approve a draft media law penalizing criticism of the Gulf emirate and its neighbors.

In neighboring monarchy Saudi Arabia, human rights activist Ali al-Hattab said: "We are shocked by the verdict.

"Qatar has tried to help other countries like Libya and Syria become more democratic, but they won't accept it at home.

"It's shameful, and a double standard."

Microsoft sold 750,000 XBox 360s over US holiday week

MICROSOFT 750,000 Xbox 360 video-game consoles during the week of Black Friday, according to its internal statistics.

This number beat the company?s own expectations on the week that includes the US?s traditional shopping spree day (after Thanksgiving), but it didn?t indicate by how much.

Not bad for a console that debuted seven years ago.

Compare this to the?Wii U?s?initial sales of 400,000 units and the?Nintendo 3DS?s?sale of 250,000 units.

Meanwhile, there was good news for Google as it put its Nexus 4 Android out for sale again in the US. Shoppers who went to the Google Play store briefly saw an 8 GB model going for $299, shipping in 4-5 weeks.

In less than half an hour, it was sold out again.

LG makes the Nexus 4 for Google, which chooses manufacturing partners to make Nexus-branded Android phones and tablets.

Top 10 Reasons Why You Should Invest In Mining Stocks

-- Posted Wednesday, 28 November 2012 | | Source: GoldSeek.com

By Tekoa Da Silva

Disclaimer: This article does not constitute financial advice. Always consult a qualified financial professional before making any investment decisions.

In consideration of the muted share price performance of the mining sector?here are the top ten reasons to consider investing in mining stocks?

1. They Go Down ? The extreme share price volatility expressed in the mining sector represents probably it?s best attribute. As we both know, volatility scares the heck out of people, and extreme volatility shakes out the fair weathers?creating amazing buying opportunities for those who understand what volatility offers.

2. Nationalization of Mines - It is true many countries in the world today are taking action against qualified companies developing natural resource deposits. Their actions usually include appropriating the property, removing competent developers, and installing incompetent developers. Once the asset begins to crumble, the country again opens it?s doors, and asks for outside help. Large, influential companies may effectively navigate these waters, but most lack the financial power to handle such an assault. Therefore, strong premiums will develop in the share prices of companies in favorable jurisdictions. The safest in the world might include the U.S., Australia, Mexico, and of course Canada, which might be the safest.

3. It?s Just Paper ? In a period of growing concern over paper assets, financial firm and stock brokerage bankruptcies are becoming common. The level of anxiety in the Western financial system is growing, with the gold and silver community representing those with the most distrust towards the system. However, the accumulation of this distrust over time?results in simply weaker share prices. This equates to cheaper shares for investors to purchase, and potentially cheaper acquisitions for companies and funds looking to buy. One might also say??But if the broker goes bankrupt?your paper will be worthless.? Sure, if there is fraud on behalf of the broker, that can happen. But in a recent conversation with a transfer agent at ComputerShare, I was told, ?It?s mostly financial firms and corporations who use direct registration and paper share certificates,??both of which, are available to individual investors(to read my report on these methods, please see BulletProof Shares).

4. Manipulation ? It?s commonly believed that the US Federal Reserve and Global Central Banks, are actively shorting and suppressing gold and silver, along with the mining stocks. I?ve heard this story for years now. Every time the metals go down, there is ?manipulation? involved. But what about when the metals go up? Why don?t people complain about the excessively high gold prices? In my opinion, manipulation is a scapegoat for impatience and poor investment timing.

?Billy, why did you eat all the cookies??, ?Sorry mom, the devil made me do it. It was his fault?if he didn?t make me do it, I wouldn?t be in this mess!?

If suppressive manipulation in the metals market is occuring, investors should be toasting champagne and hoping the manipulation lasts as long as possible, as manipulated markets usually result in shortages or price explosions.

5. They Don?t Go Up With Gold ? Anyone who?s invested in mining shares for more than the last few years, knows that they outperform the metals. Since 2008 however, they have lagged. Does this mean they will lag the metals for the rest of eternity? Yes, if only four years of history negate the last 100+. In the markets, ?temporary dislocations? can last years. Look at long term government bonds for example. Many would say that, ?based on the last 30 years, they?ve been going up. That is proof they will go up for the next 30 years.? There is always a tipping point in which the dislocation snaps the other way with the same severity. That point cannot be predicted, and the money is made in defying the belief that, ?this is the new normal.? Just for the record the Gold Bugs Index bottomed at 36 in 2000, and sits at 445 today. That represents over a 12x-fold move since the bull market began! Gold moved from $250 to $1750 in comparison, a roughly 7x-fold move.

6. They?re At Historical Lows and Going Lower ? Compared against the metals, mining shares are at their lowest levels in nearly 30 years. A 100 year old man was talking about this recently, indicating it has only happened about 5 times in the last 100 years, but as usual, wisdom falls on deaf ears, and in the world of investments that equates opportunity. I seem to recall one of the great investors of our generation, Jim Rogers, saying something along the lines of, he?d ?rather buy something when it?s near an all-time historical low, rather than when its at an all time high.? It should be noted he prefers commodities themselves over the companies which produce them, but the historical dislocation represents something. What that something IS of course, is for you to decide.

7. The Charts Look Horrible ? One of the most common things I?ve heard all year long, is that, ?The charts looks horrible.? What the heck does that mean anyway? Does it mean the company is going to go bankrupt? Does it mean a chart qualifies a company first and foremost? If the chart looked ?great?, would it then not be the buying opportunity is currently is? Isn?t deep value usually scorned by the market precisely because it looks terrible on the outset? Can the same be said about a car?or a piece of real estate?if it?s all dirty and beat-up?does that mean it?s worthless?

The ?horrible? looking 12 year HUI chart

8. They Have Not Confirmed Themselves - Once something confirms and validates itself, it is no longer what it once was. For example, two boys argue over a green worm. One says it?s a green worm, the other says it?s a butterfly. They bet 2 packs of gummy bears on the argument. They then place the green worm in a box and observe it over the next 21 days. The worm creates a cocoon, and emerges a few days later as a butterfly. Who was right and who was wrong? They were both right, and they were both wrong. But only one made money(or gummy bears) on the deal. Once something validates itself as being the thing in which defies believe, the investment opportunity is gone, and the gummies will have been eaten.

9. George Soros Is Getting Involved - For some strange reason, many people in the world resent success, especially extreme financial success. Enter George Soros, arguably one of the most hated men in the investment world, outside of maybe former IMF chief, Dominique Strauss-Kahn. But the thing to pay attention to here, is that George didn?t become one of the world?s wealthiest men by being an idiot. He built his empire through shrewd investments and business dealings. Those who seek wealth are better advised to learn from those have accomplished such ends, rather than those who advise buying survival kits and hiding out in the woods. As a refresher on the very large positions Soros Fund Management has recently taken in mining stocks, read: The Soros Position Nobody is Talking About

10. Societal Collapse ? As some busily prepare for the collapse of society, others (most of whom are far wealthier) are busy creating plans for, and building a fortune. Numerous fund managers are buying large chunks of mining companies, and some are buying entire companies outright. Mine developers see this as an amazing opportunity to acquire projects and are scooping them up. If you know more than them about the sector, and have the self-built wealth to prove it (not just the opinion), by all means, let me know.

Reflection

If we allow logic to be our guide in the marketplace at this point in time, it would behoove ourselves to consider the most hated sectors of the marketplace, those in which the former cheerleaders have packed up their belongings and gone home. I contest the gold and silver miners might constitute one of those areas.

As John Wayne once said, ?Life?s hard. It?s even harder when you?re stupid?. Therefore, let us consult only with the actions and words of those who have already accomplished what we seek and set out to accomplish, and ignore everything and everyone else.

All the best,
Tekoa Da Silva

Saudi Arabia Investing $109 Billion Into Solar Energy, Wants 1/3 Of ...

?
This article has been reposted from Solar Love with full permission.

Saudi Arabia is planning to invest $109 billion into solar energy, looking to develop a solar industry that can provide 1/3 of its electricity by 2032.

Doing so will free up larger quantities of its reserves for international sales rather than for use domestically. With the price of oil expected to rise significantly in the coming decades, such a move makes sense from an economic standpoint.

20121124-012810.jpg

Saudi Arabia?s first solar farm is expected to begin operations by 2015, and its first nuclear plant by 2020, according to an official at the agency developing the country?s renewable (and atomic) energy program.

Its first solar power plant is expected to begin construction in early 2013, and will take up to 2 years to complete.

Khalid Al-Suliman, vice president at the King Abdullah City for Atomic and Renewable Energy, said that ?the project will get underway once the government approves his agency?s plan for renewable energy.? He?s expecting to officially receive approval by early 2013.
?
He says that they are currently targeting around ?41,000 megawatts of solar capacity within two decades,? 16,000 megawatt of which would be from photovoltaic panels, and the other 25,000 from solar thermal technology. The country currently has only around 3 megawatts of solar installations.

It is also still moving forward with its plan to build sixteen nuclear reactors by the year 2030, for a total nuclear capacity of 14,000 megawatts, which is projected to cost the country around $100 billion.

With how competetively priced the solar power is compared to nuclear, it kind of makes you wonder if they have any ulterior interests in nuclear.

Syrian war clouds Turkish plan to clear land mines

AKINCI, Turkey (AP) ? For two people walking into a Turkish minefield, they looked awfully assured.

The pair strode in from Syria on a recent afternoon, following a faint track across the grassy plain. They slipped into Turkey through a fence near a vacant military watchtower and vanished into an olive grove.

Such hazardous crossings are a smuggler's tradition at the border, where Turkish plans to clear a vast belt of land mines have been clouded by Syria's civil war. Last week, Turkey asked NATO allies to deploy Patriot missiles as a defense against any aerial attacks from Syria after shells and bullets spilled across the border, killing and injuring some Turks.

Starting in the 1950s, Turkish forces planted more than 600,000 U.S.-made "toe poppers" ? mines designed to maim, not kill ? and other land mines along much of its 900-kilometer (560-mile) border with Syria, which runs from the Mediterranean Sea to Iraq. The aim was to stop smugglers whose cheap black market goods undercut the Turkish economy and later to thwart Kurdish rebels from infiltrating Turkey's southeast.

However, the mines also killed and maimed civilians, took arable land from Turkish farmers and are now considered by many as a too-crude method of policing.

Turkey says it plans to clear anti-personnel mines on the Syria border by 2016, missing a March 2014 deadline required by the international Mine Ban Treaty. The International Campaign to Ban Landmines, a Geneva-based group that won the 1997 Nobel Peace Prize, has criticized Turkey for its slow progress.

The European Union has committed ?40 million ($52 million) to demining and surveillance equipment near Turkey's border Iran and Armenia on the basis that Turkey could eventually become the EU's most eastern border. Turkey, adjacent to the Middle East and Central Asia, has long been a drug trafficking route and a transit point for migrants who enter Europe illegally.

Since last year, nearly 200,000 Syrian refugees have crossed into Turkey, mostly through border posts or areas known to be free of mines. A Syrian man and two children were reported killed in August, however, by an explosive in an area of Mardin province that had been mined by the Turkish military. Syrian forces last year were also suspected of laying some mines to stem an embarrassing refugee flight into Turkey.

A Turkish smuggler in the border village of Akinci, south of the city of Gaziantep, said he has charged Syrian refugees up to 25 Turkish lira ($14) each to lead them through Turkish minefields. He has also acted as a lookout, monitoring shifts of Turkish military sentries and telling another smuggler who escorts Syrian clients, usually before dawn.

"I don't know where they are going. I don't care," said the gaunt man, who would not give his name and claimed he was desperate for cash. "I know it's risky for me, but I have to do it."

According to lore, villagers used to enter the Akinci mosque, which lies beside a minefield, for prayers and then sneak out the back into Syria for business.

On foot, mule or motorcycle, smugglers traditionally brought in items from Syria, including tea, gasoline, cigarettes, electronics and livestock, to sell for a profit in Turkey. The Syrian war has disrupted but not extinguished the trade among communities that were abruptly divided when the border was drawn in the last century.

Some smugglers try their luck at border posts, which became easier to cross when visa requirements were removed in 2009 after the warming of ties between Turkey and Syrian President Bashar Assad, now an enemy because of his attacks on the Syrian opposition. A few weeks ago, a Syrian man was detained while trying to enter Turkey with gold bars in his waistband.

Approved traffic moves the other way, as Turkey and other nations that oppose Assad send logistical and humanitarian aid to Syrian rebels and civilians. While Turkey says it is not arming the insurgency, Syrian rebels have told The Associated Press they receive some weapons and ammunition from the Turkish side with only sporadic interference from border patrols. According to rebels, these weapons are bought with funding from rich Syrians or sympathetic Gulf Arabs.

Fences are down and cars can cross in some parts adjoining Syria's Idlib province, an opposition stronghold.

The first mines on the Syrian border were planted after smugglers killed two customs agents in 1956. Turkey laid more mines in the 1980s and 1990s, at the height of its war with the rebel Kurdistan Workers' Party, or PKK, which was backed by Syria. Turkey is again worried about possible infiltration by Kurdish rebels who are cheered by an autonomy grab by their ethnic brethren in Syria.

The Turkish defense ministry told the AP it started evaluating bids from demining companies in July and would sign contracts once the assessment is complete.

"Developments in Syria to this day have not affected our plans or work," the ministry said. NATO said it is assisting with "technical preparations" for the mine clearance.

Cenk Sidar, managing director of Sidar Global Advisors, a Washington-based consultancy, said he believed that Turkey would sign contracts but wait until the Syrian civil war is resolved.

"According to plans, the government will build electronic border surveillance systems simultaneously with the demining. Even this seems too risky at this point," Sidar wrote in an email. "It may take a few years, and some qualified/selected firms may change their pricing or conditions due to the increasing instability."

Between 2010 and 2011, a Turkish firm, Nokta, and a partner from Azerbaijan cleared more than 1,200 mines around an archaeological site, Karkemish, on the Syrian border. They found anti-tank mines and M14 mines known as "toe poppers." It was hard to work with metal detectors because the soil also contained remnants of coins and other ancient fragments; some mines had to be dug out by hand rather than detonated to avoid damaging cultural treasures.

There is no reliable data for casualties from mines laid by the Turkish military, which reported 21 people killed and 85 wounded by explosives set by the PKK in 2011. Those rebels took up arms in 1984 in the name of Kurdish rights; Turkey and the West label them terrorists.

Residents around Akinci recalled a villager who lost a limb to a mine several years ago while cutting trees for military sentries. Halil Kaya, 64, said he had heard of several dozen people over the decades who were killed or injured by mines. A deep furrow runs down Kaya's right forearm from a Turkish military bullet in his days as a smuggler.

Mehmet Dagdeviren, 49, said the Turkish military had softened and now might only fire warning shots at smugglers. He interrupted the chat to take a phone call, then rushed to a car and drove away.

A delivery from Syria needed collection.

2014 World Cup armadillo mascot named Fuleco

Associated Press Sports

updated 9:29 a.m. ET Nov. 26, 2012

SAO PAULO (AP) - Brazilians have voted to name the 2014 World Cup mascot Fuleco.

FIFA says more than 1.7 million people in Brazil took part in the vote to select the name for the armadillo. The other options were Zuzeco and Amijubi.

Fuleco comes from the Portuguese words "futebol" (football) and "ecologia" (ecology). FIFA says it "seamlessly represents the way in which the FIFA World Cup can combine the two to encourage people to behave in an environmentally friendly way."

Soccer's governing body said Sunday that Fuleco received 48 percent of the vote, while 31 percent went for Zuzeco and 21 percent for Amijubi.

Nintendo?s Wii Mini Tipped By Best Buy Canada For December 7 Release

nintendo-wii-miniSony's PlayStation 3 and the Microsoft Xbox 360 have both seen physical hardware design changes in their many years on the market, but the Wii has remained mostly the same Wii since its launch, with a minor update last year that made it slightly smaller. Now that Nintendo has released the Wii U, however, it looks like a bigger change is on the way for its older console, called the Wii Mini.

Doha set to host UN climate talks

Some 17,000 participants are due to attend the latest round of UN climate talks later in Qatar's capital, Doha.

Over the next two weeks they will be negotiating a new global deal on climate, but there are ongoing tensions between rich and poor countries.

The choice of venue has surprised many, as oil-rich Qatar has some of the highest per capita emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2) in the world.

A central divisive issue relates to the problem of "hot air" carbon permits.

The derisory term refers to attempts by some wealthy countries to carry over unused carbon permits so they can be offset against future cuts.

Developing nations say this is unfair and reduces the value of any commitment to reduce CO2.

Fault lines

  • Ambition: A growing sense among developing nations that richer countries are not aiming high enough in cutting carbon
  • Money: Lack of clarity about where the money to help poorer nations to adapt will come from
  • Disengagement: Major emitters including the United States, Canada, Russia and Japan say they will not take on new carbon targets under an extension of the Kyoto Protocol

Negotiators attending the 18th Conference of the Parties (COP18) of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change have been piecing together a new approach since the failure of talks in Copenhagen in 2009.

In Doha, though, some hard facts have to be faced, says the BBC's environment correspondent, Matt McGrath.

A financial fund to help poorer countries runs out at the end of this year, as does the first commitment period of Kyoto Protocol, that legally binds around 30 richer countries to cutting carbon emissions.

In Doha, developing nations want to see new money and a new commitment to cutting CO2 by the better-off.

Some participants are worried that, as a result of their dependence on fossil fuels for their revenues, the Qataris may not push the talks in the right direction, adds our correspondent.

Clear Statement by DOJ Demonstrates VAWA and Restraining ...

The following makes it crystal clear that the US Department of Justice policy does indeed have a war on men and fathers. Starting from the ideological premise that men are inherent batterers and woman victims the DOJ concludes that any incidence of reporting that runs contrary to this policy? should be "presented with sufficient evidence to confirm the correct designation of victims and their abusers." In other words, the outcome should conform with the preconcieved idea that men are guilty and women innocent. Thanks for Tami Pepperman to bringing this to our attention.

http://www.ojp.usdoj.gov/nij/topics/crime/intimate-partner-violence/practical-implications-research/ch3/gender.htm

Published June 2009

Section?1 ? What is their gender?

Although some sociological research [202] based on self-reporting finds equal rates of male and female partner conflict (including mostly minor physical assaults), behavior that is likely to violate most state and federal criminal and civil (protective order) statutes is typically perpetrated by males. [153]

Perpetrators that come to the attention of the criminal justice system are overwhelmingly male. For example, 86 percent of abusers brought to court for restraining orders in Massachusetts were male, [2] as were those arrested for domestic violence in California [228] and Charlotte, N.C. (as much as 97.4 percent for the most serious cases). [68] In Rhode Island, 92 percent of abusers placed on probation for domestic violence were male. [68, 141] A Cincinnati court study found 86.5 percent of 2,670 misdemeanor domestic violence court defendants to be male. [11] The overwhelming majority of their victims were women: 84 percent in both Charlotte, N.C., [68] and Berkeley, Calif. [228] The 2000 NIBRS multistate study found that 81 percent of the suspects were male and their victims were female. [117]

Jurisdictions with higher numbers of female suspects and male victims usually include higher numbers of non-intimate family violence cases. [139, 196] The latter typically involve older victims and their adult children perpetrators. A study of elder abuse across the state of Rhode Island, for example, found that two-thirds of elder female victims were abused by family members as opposed to intimate partners, including 46.2 percent by adult sons and 26.9 percent by adult daughters, 8.6 percent by grandsons and 1.6 percent by granddaughters. [139]

*******V

Implications for Law Enforcement

If the ratio of male to female suspects and victims differs substantially from those found above, departments should be alert to potential gender bias in their response to domestic violence. Ongoing training and supervision can address overrepresentation of female versus male arrests. (Research basis: Multiple studies of abusers and their victims brought to the attention of the criminal justice system [including civil protective orders] confirm the gender ratio as opposed to studies focusing on non-intimate and family conflict.)

Implications for Prosecutors

Prosecutors should be alert to gender bias in the response of local law enforcement agencies and re-screen cases if the percentage of female suspects accused of abusing male victims exceeds that commonly found across the nation. (Research basis: Multiple studies of abusers and their victims brought to the attention of the criminal justice system [including civil protective orders] confirm the gender ratio as opposed to studies focusing on non-intimate and family conflict.)

Implications for Judges

If, upon reviewing domestic violence dockets, judges find much higher rates of female-on-male abuse cases than those typically found across the country as a whole, they should be alert to potential gender bias on the part of police and/or prosecutors and ensure that they are presented with sufficient evidence to confirm the correct designation of victims and their abusers. (Research basis: Multiple studies of abusers and their victims brought to the attention of the criminal justice system [including civil protective orders] confirm the gender ratio as opposed to studies focusing on non-intimate and family conflict.)

China's 'Beijing Blues' wins at Taiwan film fest

TAIPEI, Taiwan (AP) ? China's "Beijing Blues" has won the best film award and Hong Kong's Johnnie To took home the best director's award at Taiwan's Golden Horse Film Festival, an event considered the Chinese-language Oscars.

"Beijing Blues" portrays the lives of the urban dwellers through the work of a squad of plainclothes crime-hunters.

In receiving the award, director Gao Qun Shu was visibly shocked, and he thanked the "globe" for giving an inexperienced director like him such honor and recognition.

To won best director for "Life Without Principle," which is about ordinary citizens in Hong Kong who are caught in the fallout of the global financial meltdown.

The film also won veteran Hong Kong actor Lau Ching Wan the best actor award for his portrayal of a triad thug seeking to recover money lost in a loan shark scheme.

Lau said he was happy to receive the award "even though you don't act in order to win an award."

Taiwan's Gwei Lun-mei won the best actress award for portraying a woman involved in a romantic triangle in "GF-BF," or "Girlfriend-Boyfriend."

She burst into tears on receiving the award after beating out hot contenders including Hao Lei and Bai Bai He, both of China.

China's Liang Jing won best supporting actress for playing a toothy midwife harpy in "Design of Death."

Best supporting actor went to Hong Kong's Ronald Cheng for his role in "Vulgaria," about the financial capital's struggling film industry.

Controversial Chinese director Lou Ye did not receive the widely expected award for directing box-office hit "Mystery." But at the ceremony, Lou received a rare mention for eventually directing a movie that was screened in Chinese theatres.

"Mystery" ? about a woman's radical revenge after uncovering her husband's infidelity ? is seen as marking Lou's entry into the commercial mainstream after years on the social and artistic edge.

Lou's films have long focused on sensitive subjects like sex, violence and politics, and have repeatedly been censored by China's cultural authorities.

A special award for outstanding movie worker was presented to Huang Yu-siang, a 25-year-old blind Taiwanese pianist in real life, for his first movie shot in Taiwan's "Touch of the Light," about young artists pursuing their dreams.

Society International Day to end Violence against Women

End Violence Against WomenUN Trust Fund to End Violence against Women Announces over US$8 million in grants: Malawi among beneficiaries

Today is the United Nations International Day to End Violence Against Women to mark the Day, 25 November 2012, the UN Women Executive Director Michelle Bachelet has called on all heads of state and government to make new commitments and take strong national action to protect women and girls. The UN gender entity and women's empowerment chief acknowledged that the world community has already come a long along way with national laws, international treaties, and widespread and growing awareness on ending violence against women. But she says this it is not enough.

She said Government promises must be translated into concrete actions, such as providing new safe houses, free hotline services, and free legal and medical aid to survivors. "The time for complacency has run out. Together, it is possible to stop the violence against women and girls, Mrs. Bachelet said in a televised speech made available around the world.

To assist government s in their various campaigns to end the scourge of violence against women, the UN Trust Fund to End Violence against Women, which is administered by UN Women announced this past week that over US$8 Million in grants have been disbursed to 12 initiatives in 18 countries. The initiatives taking center-stage were those that are dealing with women in conflict and transitional countries.

In ten countries funds will be used to address violence against women in conflict, post conflict and transitional settings. Malawi is among the ten countries and will use the funds to work among communities with the ending violence in the school environment. Libya received funds also for the first time. This is the Fund's 16th year to disburse funds in the campaign to end violence against women and according to UN Women the funds allocated have been received by more than 350 initiatives in 128 countries over the course of the UNTF?s 16-year history.

Another first for the Fund has been the contribution of significant support from countries in Africa, Latin America and the Arab States region, which is seen as a testament to the growing mobilization to address violence against women globally. Statistically, up to seven in ten women are targeted for physical and or sexual violence in their lifetime and 603 million women live in countries where domestic violence is still not considered a crime.

?The UN Trust Fund shows what works to prevent violence against women, to end impunity and to provide services and support to survivors,? said Michelle Bachelet, Executive Director of UN Women. ?I appeal to governments, business and foundations to support the work of this fund and make a strong contribution to ending violence against women and girls.?

This year?s announcement marks the 16th annual grant-making cycle of the UN Trust Fund. The new grantees will spearhead pioneering approaches worldwide aimed at transforming the lives of women and girls:

In Malawi, Concern Worldwide, an international non-governmental organization, received funds from the UNTF and will promote safe learning environments for girls in primary schools, institutionalizing good practices to end school-related gender-based violence.

The absence of school facilities and overcrowded classrooms in the majority of schools, are not the only problems children face. There are perverse levels of abuse and violence within the schools themselves, of which girls are often the target, are a hidden horror that Concern and other actors are working to end, not only in Malawi but other countries as well.

An example has been highlighted inKenya for where a government report published in November 2009 revealed that some 12,660 girls were sexually abused by their teachers over a five-year period. In some cases, teachers abused as many as 20 girls in a single school before they were reported to authorities.

Typically, girls in all these countries, have less of a voice socially and culturally than their male peers, and are often forced to have sex in exchange for good grades?a practice know as ?sexually transmittable grades.? The report revealed that in its worst form, gender-based violence in schools can leave girls as young as 12 years old pregnant, HIV positive, and homeless.

Ensuring that schools are a safe learning environment for boys and girls is of critical importance both economically and socially, and Concern has made it an urgent priority.

Seventeen percent of all girls in Malawi do not attend as a result of forced marriages and in Nsanje, where Concern is working, this scenario has abruptly cut short the dreams of many young girls. Some 12 percent of all females in the Malawi are aged between 6-13 years, and approximately 74 percent of the population live below the poverty line. Furthermore, approximately 17 percent of girls drop out of school as a result of forced marriages, and schools are not safe for girls due to sexual abuse by male teachers and men at large.

The twin evils of poverty and traditional customs has compelled parents, in a bid to raise finances to maintain their families, and married off their daughters when they think they have come of age. Because the suitor pays a bride price, in an ironic twist, the trend has now developed whereby the younger the girl, the higher the bride price. Concern relates the story of 12 year old Martha, and many young girls like her in Nsanje that are have been caught in the vicious child marriage trap, and sold off before they have finished their schooling.

"Their dreams, hopes and aspirations have been destroyed by these negative cultural practices or by the pervasive daughter- with-cash bartering," Concern reports.

The cultural practices, which unfortunately, are widespread, have been the major contributing factor in preventing girls from receiving an education. For instance, it is believed that girls will gain respect if they marry early and have children. Concern is hosting discussions with community leaders and education officials in Malawi to highlight the importance of education for all children.

At the United Nations where during the United Nations General Assembly Committee work (October to December), in line with the UN.secretary-General Ban Ki-moon call to a global fight to end child marriages, stern language has been incorporated into a draft resolution to eliminate child forced marriages.

In Malawi, the President, Her Excellency Mrs. Joyce Banda to commemorate the first International Day of the Girl Child (that was celebrated around the world on 11 October, 2012), has called for the increase of the age of marriage of girls to 21 years. This will allow the girl child to complete her education as well as delay the first time she starts bearing children.

As the world commemorates this day and the 16 Days of Activism against Violence against Women, it is essential that families, communities and governments join hands in ending violence against women, paving the way to equality of women and thereby "unlocking progress across board."

There is an important legal big difference from the present as well as a loan. A really nice family member or perhaps pal may offer you $5000 regarding auto repairs, for example. In the event that there is no hope associated with repayment, the cash could be a present. The particular giver couldn't sue regarding payment after within a municipal suit. However when the credit provider designates the money just like a bank loan and also the customer will pay back again even a buck, the bucks may very well be a legitimate bank loan and also the loan company could need payment anytime. Little claims courts invest a lot of period identifying whether the financial transaction including money would be a present as well as bank loan. Cash financial products are usually unprotected lending products eliminated upon your next wage. Since they're short-term financial loans, they may be little; different from $100 to $1500 and also payment arrives in your next payday. They might be very useful for conquering a quick monetary emergency, nevertheless shouldn't be viewed as the long-term financial option.

Most loan programs are addressed through finance institutions or other expert loan companies. They may use a variety of criteria to determine if the potential consumer is qualified for a financial loan. Past credit score is nearly always considered, along with existing earnings as well as assets. The goal of the borrowed funds can also be a great issue-a set up expense possibility might have much more appeal when compared with a good misdirected idea for any new eating place. 1 essential point could be the revenue to credit card debt percentage from the customer. Could the customer have the ability to pay for the bank loan back again with interest? Skilled loan providers essentially 'sell' cash, consequently debtors should be aware simply how much funding really 'costs' with regards to real cash.

Clashes erupt across Egypt over Morsi's new powers

CAIRO (AP) ? Thousands of opponents of Egypt's Islamist president clashed with his supporters in cities across the country Friday, burning several offices of the Muslim Brotherhood, in the most violent and widespread protests since Mohammed Morsi came to power, sparked by his move to grant himself sweeping powers.

The violence, which left 100 people injured, reflected the increasingly dangerous polarization in Egypt over what course it will take nearly two years after the fall of autocrat Hosni Mubarak.

Critics of Morsi accused him of seizing dictatorial powers with his decrees a day earlier that make him immune to judicial oversight and give him authority to take any steps against "threats to the revolution". On Friday, the president spoke before a crowd of his supporters massed in front of his palace and said his edicts were necessary to stop a "minority" that was trying to block the goals of the revolution.

"There are weevils eating away at the nation of Egypt," he said, pointing to old regime loyalists he accused of using money to fuel instability and to members of the judiciary who work under the "umbrella" of the courts to "harm the country."

Clashes between his opponents and members of Morsi's Muslim Brotherhood erupted in several cities. In the Mediterranean city of Alexandria, anti-Morsi crowds attacked Brotherhood backers coming out of a mosque, raining stones and firecrackers on them. The Brothers held up prayer rugs to protect themselves and the two sides pelted each other with stones and chunks of marble, leaving at least 15 injured. The protesters then stormed a nearby Brotherhood office.

State TV reported that protesters burned offices of the Brotherhood's political arm in the Suez Canal cities of Suez, Ismailia and Port Said, east of Cairo.

In the capital Cairo, security forces pumped volleys of tear gas at thousands of pro-democracy protesters clashing with riot police on streets several blocks from Tahrir Square and in front of the nearby parliament building.

Tens of thousands of activists massed in Tahrir itself, denouncing Morsi and chanting "Leave, leave" and "Morsi is Mubarak ... Revolution everywhere." Many of them represented Egypt's upper-class, liberal elite, which have largely stayed out of protests in past months but were prominent in the streets during the anti-Mubarak uprising that began Jan. 25, 2011.

"We are in a state of revolution. He is crazy of he thinks he can go back to one-man rule," one protester, Sara Khalili, said of Morsi.

"If the Brotherhood's slogan is 'Islam is the solution' ours is 'submission is not the solution'," said Khalili, a mass communications professor at the American University in Cairo. "God does not call for submission to another man's will."

Frustration had been growing for months with Morsi, Egypt's first freely elected president, who came to office in June. Critics say the Muslim Brotherhood, from which he hails, has been moving to monopolize power and that he has done little to tackle mounting economic problems and continuing insecurity, much less carry out deeper reforms.

Morsi's supporters, in turn, say he has faced constant push-back from Mubarak loyalists and from the courts, where loyalists have a strong presence. The courts have been considering a string of lawsuits demanding the dissolution of the Islamist-dominated assembly writing the next constitution. The courts already dissolved a previous version of the assembly and the Brotherhood-led lower house of parliament.

Morsi made his move Thursday, at a time when he was bolstered by U.S. and international praise over his mediating of a cease-fire ending a week of battles between Israel and Hamas in Gaza. Only a day earlier, Morsi had met with U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton just before the truce was announced.

Mustafa Kamel el-Sayyed, a Cairo University political science professor, said Morsi may be confident that the U.S. won't pressure him on his domestic moves. "The U.S. administration is happy to work with an Islamist government (that acts) in accordance with U.S. interests in the region, one of which is definitely the maintaining of the peace treaty between Egypt and Israel" and protecting Israel's security.

U.S. State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said Friday that Morsi's declarations "raise concern for many Egyptians and for the international community."

The U.S. calls for Egyptians to "resolve their differences over these important issues peacefully and through democratic dialogue," she said.

On Thursday, Morsi unilaterally issued amendments to the interim constitution that made all his decisions immune to judicial review or court orders. He gave similar protection to the constitutional panel and the upper house of parliament, which is dominated by the Brotherhood and also faced possible disbanding by the courts.

Morsi, who holds legislative as well as executive powers, also declared his power to take any steps necessary to prevent "threats to the revolution," public safety or the workings of state institutions. Rights activists warned that the vague ? and unexplained ? wording could give him even greater power than those Mubarak held under emergency laws throughout his rule.

The decree would be in effect until a new constitution is approved and parliamentary elections are held, not expected until the Spring.

The state media described Morsi's decree as a "corrective revolution," and supporters presented the move as the only way to break through the political deadlock preventing the adoption of a new constitution.

Amnesty International said the new powers "trample the rule of law and herald a new era of repression." It said a new "law protecting the revolution" also announced Thursday could provide for detaining people for up to six months without charge.

Prominent Egyptian democracy activist Mohamed ElBaradei called Morsi a "new pharaoh." The president's one-time ally, the April 6 movement, warned that the polarization could bring a "civil war."

One of Morsi's aides, Coptic Christian thinker Samer Marqous, resigned to protest the "undemocratic" decree.

"This is a crime against Egypt and a declaration of the end of January revolution to serve the interest of the Muslim Brotherhood dictatorship," wrote Ibrahim Eissa, chief editor of daily Al-Tahrir. "The revolution is over and the new dictator has killed her."

In front of the presidential palace, Muslim Brotherhood supporters and other Islamists chanted "the people support the president's decree," pumping their fists in the air.

"God will humiliate those who are attacking our president, Mohammed Morsi," said ultraconservative cleric Mohammed Abdel-Maksoud. "Whoever insults the sultan, God humiliates him," he added.

In rival protests in the southern city of Assiut, ultraconservative Islamists of the Salafi tend and former Jihadists outnumbered liberal and leftists, such as the April 6 youth groups. The two sides exchanged insults and briefly scuffled with firsts and stones.

With his decrees, Morsi was playing to widespread discontent with the judiciary. Many ? even Brotherhood opponents ? are troubled by the presence of so many Mubarak era-judges and prosecutors, who they say have failed to strongly enough prosecute the old regime's top officials and security forces for crimes including the killing of protesters.

In his decrees, Morsi fired the controversial prosecutor general and created "revolutionary" judicial bodies to put Mubarak and some of his top aides on trial a second time for protester killings. Mubarak was sentenced to life in prison for failing to stop police from shooting at protesters, but many were angry he was not found guilty of actually ordering the crackdown during the uprising against his rule.

In his speech Friday. Morsi told supporters that his decisions were meant to stop those "taking shelter under judiciary."

He said the courts had been about to disband the upper house of parliament.

"This is minority but they represent a threat to the revolution's goals," he said. "It is my duty, if I see this, to go forward along the path of the revolution and prevent any blockage."

It offers freedom of choice to consumers in choosing the right mix of financial products/services; to avoid financial burden and help correcting financial mistakes done in the past, he added.

Besides giving an investment strategy, Arthos helps one prepare for any unforseen circumstances by advising on the need for insurance considering all aspects of the individual.

Artha Yantra, a young company started by a group of alumni of the Indian School of Business, Hyderabad, received investments from WFA Global Investments, a US based investment firm.
