Apple bans controversial strategy game about Syria civil war

A controversial strategy game based on conflicts in Syria has been rejected by Apple on the grounds it targets "a specific race, culture, a real government or corporation, or any other real entity?.

Endgame: Syria allows players to control military units and attempt to maintain political advantage over President Bashar al-Assad's regime.

Designer Tomas Rawlings said in a statement the decision made it hard for games to represent and discuss real world issues.

"We had hoped that Apple would be more nuanced in how they applied this rule but we got a bit worried when it had been in submission for around two weeks without a decision," he explained.

"We then figured that because of the controversy of using the gaming medium to cover an ongoing war meant passing the game had become an issue for them."

Endgame: Syria was made as part of the "Game The News Project", which asked developers to create games based on recent news events.

Speaking with gaming blog Arabic Gamers, Rawlings insisted the game isn't propaganda.

"Only in the sense all media is propaganda," he said. "Nobody has forced us to make this game, paid us to say one thing or another - I drew from a wide variety of sources and reflect my own feelings about events, as the designer, in this game."

Despite Apple's decision to reject the game, it's still available for free download on Google Play.
