Security Consultant John M. White CPP, CHPA of Protection Management, LLC, recommends that businesses install cash drop boxes near registers.
According to security expert John M. White, CPP, CHPA, "Still to this day in many retail or food establishments a member of management will walk around collecting excess money from registers throughout the business day."? White says that there have been cases where robberies have occurred during this type of operation.? "It makes no sense that with all the resources that are available today that someone would be walking around to registers collecting, sometimes thousands of dollars, and then taking that money to the office.? All the while as patrons and customers look on," said White.? He went on to say that businesses can install drop boxes near the registers where employees can continuously drop cash and checks throughout their shifts, and those boxes can be emptied after-hours when the business is closed.
White suggests that businesses consider the following security tips:
? Keep only enough cash in the register to make change.? All large bills should be placed in a drop box as soon as they are received.
? Only collect the cash from these drop boxes when the business is closed.
? Do not leave cash in registers or drop boxes over-night.
? Insure that the size of the drop box is large enough to handle the number of drops that your staff makes each day.
? Securely attach the drop box so that it cannot be removed.
? Limit the access to the keys used to open the boxes, and keep them secured when not in use.
? Make sure all drops have the employee's name/date/time/amount of that drop attached.
